#LiveLikeItsTrue

“So if it's true, it changes everything right now, not later. Now, not in that next place, not in that next season, not when life slows down right now. It changes how we live. It changes how we pray. It changes how we treat people. It rearranges our priorities to the point that the watching world will probably say, you're out of your mind because you're living like the resurrection is true.”

#FlipTheScript

“So what Paul does is he goes, wait a minute. I don't even need to defend myself against the riots because my accusers aren't even here. But who is here? Ananias, the high priest. And what is he accusing me of? Nothing that happened in that room with him. Because if you go back to chapter 22, you see they got into a discussion about the resurrection. And Paul says, the resurrection is here in Christ Jesus. It's not just on someday when we die. The resurrection and the life and the truth in Christ is here now. So on trial, Paul flips the script from defending himself to present the gospel to Felix and the high priest and everybody who was listening to this public forum.”

#GodsUnfailingLove

“But the good news is that even when Paul's own struggles come out, God's with him through it all, and we're gonna see a man navigate this extreme difficulty, even his own challenges, not necessarily perfectly, but as one who is perfectly loved and not forsaken, which is exactly what gives him the security and the humility to actually regroup when needed and follow Jesus all the way through. We're gonna see this. So we're gonna walk through Acts 23, and as we do,”

#GospelOfJesus

“This is the gospel that god became a man and he lived the life we couldn't live and he died the death we deserved to die. And he conquered death in the grave. And the only one with enough glory to pay for what we owed, paid it and paid it in full, and he canceled the curse of sin and death. He broke open the grave, and he paved the way to eternal life with God the Father that doesn't just start one day when we die, but it's an eternal life that starts the moment we place our faith and our hope and what Christ did for us at the cross. And he fills us with his Holy Spirit, and he transforms us from the inside out. And he gives us new affections, new desires, new purpose, and new identity. And it's not the end, it's just the beginning.”

#PeaceOfGod

“The peace of God will guard you. The very thing that we're called to do with the deposit is the very thing his peace does for us. Because that's the difference between morimnah and shalom, guys. Anxiety says, I've been entrusted with real responsibility, and it's all up to me. And that begs the question, do I have what it takes? And it's always just your recipe for pride or shame or the symptom that that's the seesaw you're on. Right? But shalom. The peace of god, the of God, it says, I've been entrusted with real responsibility, and the one who gave it is still the one carrying it as he carries me.”

#PerfectlyLoved

“And he sets you apart and says, this one's mine. And he doesn't say this one's perfect. He says, this one's perfectly loved, and I'm perfecting them in my love by my grace as I envelop them into my very heart, Not only for themselves, but for those around them. This is the gospel. It's not just a side hobby for Sundays, guys. It's the priority and privilege of eternity.”

#TempleWithin

“Maybe that will change how you approach your own sin, being a walking tent of heavenly majesty, thinking about that we, as Christ followers, have the spirit of God in us. And we are his temple. And we're representing him everywhere we go. But also the spirit is talking to us inside us. So there's a right and responsibility there. But there's also this peace and comfort that we are in the family of God.”

#RestoredToFeed

“So whatever fire exposed you, whatever boat you've climbed back into or are hiding in, the risen Christ is standing on the shore of your life this morning. And he's not just asking, how could you? He's asking, do you love me? And if the answer, however grieved, however shaky, is, lord, you know that I love you, Then hear his voice. rest. You're restored. Now feed my sheep. That's restoration. That's a heart redirected in love. Let's pray.”

#MercyAndJusticeMeet

“That's the answer. Around eight hundred years later, after Jonah sat outside the city waiting for the justice of God to fall on his enemies, Jesus Christ hung on a cross outside the walls of another city. And the wrath of Jonah, the wrath that Jonah was waiting for and even deserved, fell on Christ. So please see this. You need to see this. Like the booth of our bitterness and the cross of Christ both stand outside the city. But one was designed to watch God's wrath fall, while the other was raised to take it. And so at the cross, God doesn't choose between justice and mercy. Instead, he satisfies both. That's where god's mercy and justice meet, at the cross of Christ. That's grace.”

#BeholdBeHeld

“Guys, God's not looking for people to associate with him. He's not looking for people to manage him. He's calling us to behold him and be held by him. That's what repentance is. It's being overthrown by the grace of God and upended from the inside out over and over and over again. Not just because you're afraid of the storms out there, but because you know that you need the only one who can calm the storms raging in here.”

#ConvictionLeadsHome

“``Guys, when the holy spirit convicts you of sin, that's not God being irritated with you. That's not him being ashamed of you. That's that condemnation talk. Condemnation will drive you away from him. Conviction, though, is different. Conviction is love saying, this, that, that lifestyle, those ways, those are beneath who I made you to be. So come home. Conviction leads you to Jesus. And I honestly think, guys, that the reason most of us minimize our own sin with that whole, like, it's no big deal mentality isn't that we think it's a small thing. It's that deep down, we sense how heavy it really is, and we can't handle it. Like, the only place that we can actually come to grips with the depth of our own sin is inside the grace of a god who's already paid for it And said that's not who you are. I've covered that. Come home. That's grace.”

#JesusIsTheBetterJonah

“``See, any honest reading of this story means we're gonna see ourselves in Jonah on some some level. But the good news of the gospel is that everywhere Jonah failed, Jesus fulfills. Jonah ran from the presence of God. Jesus carried the presence of God to us. Jonah wanted his enemies destroyed. Jesus wants his enemies forgiven. Jonah swept in the storm out of non rebellion. Jesus would one day sleep in a storm out of perfect trust and stand up and say, cease quiet because he's the only one with enough glory and authority to speak to it. Jonah was hurled into the sea for his own sin. Jesus was willingly hurled into the sea of God's wrath for our sin.”

#AlreadyNotYet

“``Right now, we're kind of in the picture of, at Easter, we we come together and we have a worship service on Friday night, Good Friday, and we talk about Jesus' crucifixion. And it's solemn and it's quiet. And then Sunday morning, we come together, we celebrate the resurrection. That's why we worship on Sundays. But there's a day in between. Some traditions celebrate that as holy Saturday, and they talk about what is happening there in this time. The scripture's unclear, but Jesus has died. He doesn't raise again till Sunday. So what happens in the middle? That's where we're sitting right now. It's the already not yet. And God is saying through Peter, just trust me. Trust me because I have an imperishable inheritance of your salvation waiting for you. Sunday is coming even when you're in the darkness of your trials and tribulation.”

#BornAgainLivingHope

“``Is there something in your life you're like, I really hope I get this? I hope I get this job. I hope I get this person to go out with me. I hope I get this really cool thing. I hope I get this deal so I can be secure and make some money. You may have had that hope before? Did it happen every time? No. That's worldly hope. That is that is a, sometimes an empty and vain wish. That's not what Peter's talking about here. He says, we are born again to a living hope, a hope that is foundational in God's promises. It's based on God's faithfulness from eternity past pointing to the eternity forward into the future. In Romans chapter five, he says this is the hope that will not disappoint because God's faithfulness not to not based on us, but what God's faithfuls faithfulness it is. So we're born again to a living hope, but for what? Verse four tells us. We're born again to a living hope, to an inheritance.”

#BlessedLifeInChrist

“``Like, the blessed life, hear me, is the life that has Jesus. The blessed life is the life that knows at a heart level the light of the glory of God shining in full strength in the face of Christ. Like, church planting's taught me anything, it's that success in this life is not the blessing. Even success in ministry and the great commission, success is not the blessing. It's not. The blessing is the grace of God. The blessing is the gospel. The blessing is knowing Jesus. Full stop.”

#SinIsTyrant

“``It it it wants to make you obey. Like, most people think that sin's a sign of their freedom. Right? Like, people are like, I do what I want. You can't tell me what to do. That's how they treat church and religion and all this other stuff. They're like, ah, whatever. I do what I want to do. And it's like, really? Because it's actually the other way around. Sin is not a symptom of your freedom, guys. Sin is a sign that you're still enslaved. It's actually the other way around, which leads to the first point. Sin is a tyrant.”

#GodEveryHour

“What about when all that you placed your hope in him for fails? What about when you're like, man, I'm praying. I know God always comes through in the end. But listen. He's not just the God who builds our faith for the final moment or the buzzer beater. He's not just the god of rescue from disaster. He's the god not only of the eleventh hour, but of the twelfth and the thirteenth hour. He's not just the god of the seventh day. He's the god of the eighth day.”

#HistoricalResurrection

“Guys, Luke emphasizes evidence. Right? He's a physician. He cares about these things. Jesus suffered. Jesus died. Jesus rose. Jesus appeared. Jesus taught for forty days. The risen Christ is now appearing to his followers proving, and I repeat proving that the resurrection was not a myth. It was not a legend. It was not just some wishful thinking. Paul tells us in first Corinthians 15 that Jesus presented himself alive to over 500 brothers at once. What that means is that Christianity is not built on religious inspiration. Christianity is not built on religious inspiration. It is built on a historical resurrection.”

#StayAlertJesusReturn

“So so don't listen to anybody telling you they know when Jesus is gonna return. They don't. Okay? So, like, if anyone tells you that certain things must happen first, the temple's gotta be rebuilt or some ceremony needs to be performed. Nope. He could come back. He could return even before I finish this. You hear a trumpet? Verse 33, be on guard. Keep awake for you do not know when the times will come. It's like a man going on a journey when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. Therefore, stay awake for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening or at midnight or when the rooster crows or in the morning, lest he come suddenly and find you asleep.”

#EternalLifeNow

“He died for you, took your place in judgment so that we would have eternal life. John Allen, our pastor, says it says it every week, that eternal life starts now, not just one way one day when you die. Jesus said, I've come to you had may have life and have it more abundantly because I want you to be on mission with me. I need you to tend this garden and develop this vineyard for me so you can share the fruit of it with other people. Jesus is obedient to death, but he didn't stay there for he rose again for you. God wrapped in the flesh now sits at the right hand of the owner of that vineyard. And he says, they're mine. Those are my bond servants. The question is, who are you in the story?”

#ChildlikeFaith

“Childlike faith isn't childish. It's the posture of true confidence and growth in Christ. Like, you you need to understand, true confidence is not childish. True confidence comes from faith in Christ. Like, even the word confidence comes from the Latin root confide, faith. But if your faith is in yourself, you're just childish. That's why childish people are constantly crying and insecure because they're focused on their ability or inability.”

#FinishedAtTheCross

“Guys, this is the gospel, that God became a man and he lived the life we couldn't live, and he died the death that we deserve to die because of sin. He took the eternal condemnation upon himself, and he only wants enough glory to pay for what we owed, paid for it, and paid for it in full, and he finished it. He accomplished it at the cross. It is finished. And he broke the curse of sin and death, and he paved the way through the resurrection to eternal life, and it's an eternal life with God the father. It doesn't just start one day when we die. It starts the moment you place your faith and your hope and what Christ did for you at the cross, and he fills you, overshadows you even with his holy spirit now.”

#BewareBothLeavens

“Both leavens are dangerous, but they look different. The leaven of the Pharisees makes you hard, makes you proud, makes you judgmental. The leaven of Herod makes you soft, compromising, and distracted. But both will quietly corrupt our hearts and our homes if we let them. So how do we avoid it without just reacting? Again, how do we navigate without getting entrenched in one ditch or the other? This is the heartbeat heartbeat behind this deconstruction movement.”

#MissionFirst

“But what's interesting in this passage is that Jesus doesn't pander. He doesn't wring his hands and worry like, oh, how am I gonna save my hometown and and camp out there for a little bit? He moves on. Like, he says, I've got I've got other things to do. I've got bigger fish to fry. We can't we're not gonna stick around here. We're we're going. The mission is too important. #FearOfGodFeedsFaith

“The holy fear of God doesn't torment, guys. It delivers us from all other fears like chaos and the enemy and even death because of what Christ has done on our behalf. When your faith is in him and not in yourself, it casts out all other fears. Like the holy fear of God, hear this, it feeds our faiths. It perfects us in love, and it draws us toward him, not pushing us away from him. The only reason it pushes you away from him is because your faith isn't in him, it's in you. And you realize you don't have what it takes. Good. Cry out to him. He loves you.”

“Guys, nobody's more disgusted by sin than Jesus. You can bet your bottom dollar, and yet nobody's too far gone for the grace of Christ to transform. And Jesus doesn't just pass us by. He didn't pass Levi by. He didn't shun him. He didn't ignore him. And praise God, he hasn't passed you by either. Praise God he didn't pass me by. #CrownOrCrucify

“Essentially, he's saying to everyone, I love how Tim Keller puts it. He says that Jesus was saying, crown me or kill me, but I will not simply be liked. Meaning, there's no room for anyone to just admire him or think he's like an interesting person. He's a good teacher. He is. But there's no neutral ground here. He's either lord of all or not at all. He is the one who spits the lukewarm out of his mouth. Like, those are the stakes, guys. Jesus cried into Jerusalem declaring, crown me or crucifying me or or crown me or crucify me, but you will not ignore me. You cannot.”

#InsideOutResurrection

“This is a truth the world doesn't understand, and it's one of the big reasons people don't want to even come to church or hear the gospel, because they think I don't have what it takes. Here's the truth. They don't, and neither do you, and neither do I. But here's the good news. Jesus does. This is the major point of the book of Nehemiah, this Old Testament book. The main point is this. We don't just need an outside in resolution. We need an inside out resurrection.”

“Y'all the power for change does not come from your pledges. It comes from his purchase. Do you all see that? What you and I want to do, we want to find ourselves caught in the act and then make a bunch of promises of how we'll be different. That's what we do. But the power source shifts onto you and your pledges. You you with me? But the power to be the fallow ground breaking up isn't about your fallow breaking up plan, though you should have it. #NehemiahForeshadowsChrist

“And then in a this prophetic foreshadowing of Jesus Christ himself, follow this, Nehemiah enters the destruction and ruin of God's people. Commissioned by the high king, he enters into the destruction and ruin of God's people. It was a city that was destroyed by sin. It was a people who had turned from God, broke covenant with him, and now lay in ruin. This is what Nehemiah entered into. Chapter two paints a picture of Nehemiah entering just like Christ would four hundred and fifty plus years after him. In fact, his story is about the greater invitation extended to all of us to rally and unify under a greater authority for a greater purpose, even a purpose that connects directly to Nehemiah's so many years ago. And so as we do, we are called to look to the same one, even the one that Nehemiah's story is blatantly pointing to, and I'm gonna show you that. I'm gonna show you that this story is just screaming. It is blatantly pointing to the author and finisher, the cornerstone of our faith, Jesus Christ.”

#SinBeginsInTheHeart

“Sin starts in the heart. They saw, they lusted, they took. Now, hear me. If it's given by God, it's not lust. It's just God's good gifts, right? But God's good gifts need to be received according to God's good design and God's ways. Because when God's ways get ignored for our ways, God's gifts then become curses rather than blessings because we elevate the gift over the giver and it becomes a place of pain and sorrow rather than joy and relationship. And that always results in catastrophe. Because God's called us ultimately to himself. And when we want something more than we want God, that's called idolatry. Anything you want more than you want God is the definition of an idol.”

#JesusInMyPlace

“``Grace, unmerited favor, this gift from God, the good news of Jesus in my place. That's the gospel in four words. Jesus in my place. And Paul says, you cannot move past this. This good news that yes, you and I, we were sinners. We had committed, as R .C. Sproul says, cosmic treason against a good God of heaven. We said, I don't want you to be king. I want to be king. I want to define my world. I want to define what's right for me, but yet Jesus, in light of our sin and our infinite sin debt that we have against God, Jesus came and he lived the perfect sinless life that we can't. He died the death that we deserve on the cross, all to pay our sin debt back to God the Father in full. And we know he did because three days later, he walked out of the grave.”

#FreedomThroughFaith

“I believe that God wants to say something to every single one of us today, but for some of us that are carrying around some of these kinds of things, I believe that God wants us to walk out of here free from these things today, that he wants to do a gospel work in our lives, that when we walk out of here we leave some of these things behind for good.”

Beliefs

What are its stated core beliefs?
Risen Church’s stated core beliefs include that the Bible is divinely inspired, wholly true and trustworthy, and the supreme standard for faith and life; that there is one triune God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; and that Jesus Christ is God’s Son, who became human, lived without sin, died to redeem people from sin, rose from the dead, ascended to heaven, and will return. (https://risenchurchvb.com/about/)

The church also highlights these guiding values: keeping the gospel of Jesus central, practicing joyful generosity, depending on the Holy Spirit, growing through gospel community, and pursuing people who are far from God. (https://risenchurchvb.com/about/)

What are its stated policies concerning LGBTQ people?
Risen Church’s provided website material does not state a specific policy concerning LGBTQ people. In a sermon, the church describes marriage as “between a man and a woman joined by God” and calls this God’s design, while saying the message is “not about condemnation” and should be lived out “with gentleness and respect.” ([47:30 from October 26, 2026])

The sermon also says Jesus came to save, redeem, and restore, and that he meets people “right where you are.” It does not specify policies on LGBTQ people’s attendance, membership, leadership, or employment. ([49:46 from October 26, 2026]) (https://risenchurchvb.com/about/)

Teaching

Which recent sermons would help someone understand the teaching?
For understanding the **Sermon on the Mount** teaching, start with **“The Sermon on the Mount: The Beatitudes,”** then listen to **“Why So Angry?”** and **“The Faithful Bridegroom.”** **“A Perfected Character”** is also helpful for seeing how Jesus’ teaching shapes our character and relationships. These are all part of Risen Church’s recent Sermon on the Mount series. (https://risenchurchvb.com/messages/page/35/) (https://risenchurchvb.com/messages/page/34/)

How does the church talk about sin, confession and forgiveness?
Risen Church describes sin as something from which people need salvation and genuine repentance—not merely regret. It teaches that the Holy Spirit convicts people of sin, and that repentance is “a genuine turning from sin toward God,” inseparable from faith in Jesus. Salvation and forgiveness are offered freely through Christ, whose blood secured redemption; justification is God’s full acquittal of those who repent and believe. (https://risenchurchvb.com/about/)

John Allen teaches that biblical confession means facing what is true about God and ourselves: God is good, we have sinned, and God’s mercy is greater. Confession should lead to repentance and a changed direction, not getting stuck in shame or self-condemnation. It also includes confessing sin to one another and praying for healing, with a spirit of grace rather than condemnation. ([13:42 from March 16, 2026]) ([34:26 from March 16, 2026])

The church also teaches that forgiveness flows from receiving God’s forgiveness in Christ: forgiven people are called to forgive others. Forgiving does not mean pretending the harm was acceptable or excusing injustice; it means entrusting justice to God and extending forgiveness. Forgiveness and reconciliation are distinct: forgiveness can be offered, while reconciliation depends on repentance and should be approached with wisdom and appropriate boundaries. ([45:34 from July 21, 2025]) ([48:12 from July 21, 2025])

How does the teaching approach community and honesty with others?
We see community as central to Christian growth, not merely an activity: we pursue one another and welcome outsiders into the fellowship of the church. The teaching also encourages people to grow together through community groups and shared life, rather than treating faith as a solo journey. (https://risenchurchvb.com/about/) ([24:31 from June 28, 2022]) ([27:25 from June 28, 2022])

Honesty should be expressed with love and humility. We are called to speak truth while caring about how it affects the other person—not to use truth as an excuse for harshness or hostility. When we get it wrong, we can acknowledge it and apologize; and in community, we should resist gossip and divisiveness and extend forgiveness and grace. ([26:50 from November 14, 2022]) ([30:01 from November 14, 2022]) ([45:23 from August 05, 2024])

How does the church approach doubt and suffering?
We don’t treat honest questions in hardship as something to hide. We encourage bringing them to God—asking “why?” and asking for wisdom—while remaining open to trusting him even when we don’t understand or like what’s happening. ([35:00 from July 28, 2026])

We also don’t promise that faith means avoiding suffering. We recognize that pain is real in a fallen world, and that Christians may face trials; the hope is that suffering is not meaningless, and that Christ’s resurrection points to life beyond it. ([25:50 from August 11, 2024]) We encourage people not to face it alone: seek Christ’s nearness and let others in the church encourage and support you. ([32:47 from July 28, 2026])

How does the church approach faith and work?
Risen Church treats work as part of a Christian’s whole-life stewardship and mission—not something separate from faith. We teach that believers are stewards, not owners, of what God gives them, and that this includes their career and relationships as well as money and possessions. The aim is to use those gifts for God’s glory, rather than living only for personal gain. ([16:34 from May 11, 2024]) ([19:46 from May 11, 2024])

That also shapes how people work and relate to coworkers: the church encourages humble, loving conduct and seeing everyday relationships as opportunities to care for others and share the gospel. ([18:19 from October 09, 2023]) ([38:09 from May 04, 2026]) This fits Risen’s broader emphasis on using people’s gifts and talents in service of the church’s mission. Is an answer based on an official statement or an interpretation of sermons?
It depends on the source: the church website gives Risen Church’s official stated beliefs and commitments, while a conclusion drawn from a sermon is an interpretation of that sermon. For example, the website states that gospel community is a primary means by which the Holy Spirit makes disciples. (https://risenchurchvb.com/about/)

In a sermon, John Allen interprets Jesus’ teaching in the Sermon on the Mount as showing that Jesus fulfills God’s law so people can be filled with God’s love. That is a pastoral interpretation, not itself an official website statement. ([07:58 from June 05, 2023])

Can someone join groups or volunteer before becoming a member?
Yes—newcomers are welcome to check out Community Groups; a pastor specifically invited people who were new, even on their first visit, to join or explore one. ([01:46 from September 27, 2023])

Serving is also presented as a way to get connected, and the church invited people to help serve during its move to two services. The website doesn’t specify whether particular volunteer roles have additional requirements. (https://risenchurchvb.com/weekender/) ([53:02 from March 01, 2021])

The Weekender covers Community Groups, serving opportunities, and what it means to become a Partner. It’s required before becoming a Partner, but attendees aren’t required to become Partners. (https://risenchurchvb.com/weekender/)
