Psalm 67 takes the image of people walking back up from the water after baptism and asks the real question: now what? Baptism is not the finish line. Baptism is the beginning of new identity, new purpose, and new life. Jonah’s story gives that same picture, a man swallowed up, three days down, then spit back out onto the shore with a calling to take mercy to lost people.

Psalm 67 grabs the heart of that calling with one simple truth: blessed to be a blessing. The opening blessing asks God to be gracious, to bless, and to make his face shine. Selah means pause and pray, not just breeze past it, but marinate in it until the soul actually takes it in. That blessing is not meant to stop with the blessed. Psalm 67 puts grace before witness. God blesses so that his way may be known on earth and his saving power among all nations. The world gets that backwards and says blessing has to be earned by achievement. The gospel says identity comes first, then witness overflows.

The nations’ problem is deeper than bad leadership, bad systems, or bad information. Psalm 67 says the real problem is a praise problem. Missions exists because worship does not. The goal is not to create religious people who associate with a culture, but worshipers who taste and see that God is worthy.

The fear of the Lord is not the opposite of joy. Psalm 67 ends with the ends of the earth fearing him, right after calling the nations to gladness and singing. The fear of God gives weight to his words, so when he says “fear not,” “not guilty,” “loved,” and “mine,” those words scatter every contradiction like dust in the wind. God’s delay is not neglect. Like, let the nations be glad and sing for joy. Let the ends of the earth fear him. That's part of maturity in Christ is realizing that those things are not intention. In fact, throughout the scriptures, these two things are intimately tied together. You get things like Psalm two, which says, rejoice with trembling.”
