Jesus: Our Mighty God and Divine Warrior
Summary
In today's message, we explored the profound identity of Jesus as the "Mighty God," a title given to Him in Isaiah 9:6. This title, "El Gabor," translates to "Divine Warrior," emphasizing Jesus' role as a powerful and victorious figure. We began by reflecting on our cultural fascination with superheroes, noting that this desire for a hero is deeply rooted in our need for a savior who can rescue us from sin, death, and evil. This longing is ultimately fulfilled in Jesus, who is not just a baby in a manger but our Mighty God.
We delved into the biblical context of the term "Gabor," tracing its use throughout the Old Testament to describe mighty warriors and champions. This word is applied to figures like the Nephilim, Nimrod, and Goliath, highlighting their strength and prowess. However, when combined with "El," it signifies the ultimate divine warrior—God Himself. Jesus, as El Gabor, embodies this divine strength and victory.
Jesus' victory is not just a historical event but a cosmic triumph over sin, death, and the devil. Through His death and resurrection, He achieved what theologians describe as "Christus Victor," a victory that liberates us from the bondage of sin and grants us eternal life. This victory is both a present reality and a future promise, as Jesus will return to establish His kingdom and bring justice and peace.
As we celebrate Christmas, we are reminded that Jesus' story does not end in the manger or even at the cross. He is coming again as the divine warrior to set things right. This anticipation of His return should inspire us to live in faith and hope, embracing the victory He has already secured for us.

Day 1: The Deep Longing for a Savior
Our cultural fascination with superheroes reveals a profound spiritual longing for a savior who can rescue us from the perils of sin, death, and evil. This desire is not merely a product of modern storytelling but is deeply embedded in the human heart. We yearn for someone who embodies strength, justice, and the ability to overcome insurmountable odds. This longing is ultimately fulfilled in Jesus, the Mighty God, who is not just a figure of history but a living Savior who offers redemption and hope. As we reflect on this, we are reminded that Jesus is the true hero who meets our deepest needs and desires. [01:17]
Isaiah 25:8-9 (ESV): "He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken. It will be said on that day, 'Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the Lord; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.'"
Reflection: Think about a time when you felt the need for a hero in your life. How can you invite Jesus to be that hero today, addressing your deepest fears and needs?
Day 2: Jesus, the Ultimate Divine Warrior
The title "El Gabor" in Isaiah 9:6 signifies Jesus as the ultimate divine warrior, emphasizing His strength and victory over all spiritual adversaries. This term, rooted in the Old Testament, was used to describe mighty warriors and champions, yet when combined with "El," it points to God Himself as the supreme warrior. Jesus embodies this divine strength, not through physical might but through His sacrificial love and resurrection power. His victory is not limited to a single event but is an ongoing reality that assures us of His power over sin and evil. [05:19]
Psalm 24:8 (ESV): "Who is this King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle!"
Reflection: In what areas of your life do you need to see Jesus as your divine warrior? How can you rely on His strength to overcome the challenges you face today?
Day 3: Christus Victor - The Cosmic Triumph
Jesus' death and resurrection are not merely historical events but cosmic victories over sin, death, and the devil. This concept, known as "Christus Victor," highlights the liberation and eternal life offered to us through Jesus' triumph. His victory is comprehensive, addressing not only personal sin but also the broader powers of darkness that seek to enslave humanity. By embracing this victory, we are invited into a new reality where we are no longer bound by sin but are free to live in the light of His grace and truth. [15:25]
Colossians 2:14-15 (ESV): "By canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him."
Reflection: Reflect on an area of your life where you feel trapped or defeated. How can you embrace the victory of Jesus in this area and experience the freedom He offers?
Day 4: The Present and Future Victory of Jesus
Jesus' victory is both a present reality and a future promise. While He has already secured victory over sin and death, He will return to establish His kingdom fully, bringing justice and peace. This dual aspect of His victory calls us to live in the tension of the "already" and the "not yet." We are invited to experience His peace and justice now, even as we anticipate the fullness of His kingdom in the future. This hope should inspire us to live with faith and courage, knowing that the ultimate victory is assured. [19:10]
Revelation 21:4-5 (ESV): "He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away. And he who was seated on the throne said, 'Behold, I am making all things new.'"
Reflection: How does the promise of Jesus' future return and the establishment of His kingdom influence the way you live today? What steps can you take to align your life with this hope?
Day 5: Embracing Victory by Faith
To experience the fullness of Jesus' victory, we must embrace it by faith, trusting in His power and following Him as our divine warrior. This involves a daily commitment to live in the light of His victory, allowing His strength to guide and empower us. Faith is not passive but active, requiring us to step out in trust and obedience, even when circumstances seem daunting. As we embrace His victory, we are transformed and equipped to be agents of His kingdom in the world. [22:16]
Hebrews 11:1 (ESV): "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen."

Quotes
All right, grab your Bibles and go to Isaiah chapter 9. We're in a series, Christmas series here at Village Bible Church called His Name. We're looking specifically at the four names of Jesus given in the prophet Isaiah's prophecy about the coming Messiah. And last week was Wonderful Counselor, today is Mighty God. [00:00:00]
People love a good superhero. And we're living in a day and age where we have a lot of superheroes, a lot of mythical figures to look up to. And so I've got a couple pictures. This is audience participation, so it's okay to talk in church. Identify who this superhero is. Here's the first one. Thor, God of Thunder. He's from Norse mythology, but you might know him from Marvel mythology, and he's a popular superhero. How about this one? [00:00:23] (34 seconds)
Jesus is the divine warrior. This word for mighty God is, in the Hebrew, El Gabor. El is the word for God, and that's tied for different words in the Hebrew to mean different things. El Shaddai, El Eon. There's all these different names that God has. El is God. But the word translated into mighty is Gabor. Gabor can also be translated mighty warrior, or divine warrior, a champion, a hero. [00:05:19] (32 seconds)
So Yahweh is the name of God. from the Old Testament. And some Bibles translated Jehovah. But Yahweh is I am who I am as God appeared to Moses in the burning bush. And his description is this thing, a warrior of warriors, a mighty God, a supernatural champion. And this is El Gabor. So don't let the fact that Jesus stepped into time and space as a baby fool you into thinking that he was only a baby. [00:10:10] (41 seconds)
Jesus existed with the Father before time began. The Trinity, the three in one, Father, Son, Holy Spirit. But at Christmas, Jesus took on flesh and was born humbly in a manger. But there's much more to him than meets the eye. He is our mighty God. It's like Clark Kent. Clark Kent goes around kind of a bumbling. Clark Kent, he's not very smart. It doesn't seem he doesn't win any of the journalist awards. [00:10:51] (31 seconds)
He's our victory over all these things that would seek to enslave us. Jesus has conquered them on the cross. 1 Corinthians 15. 1 Corinthians 15. 1556 says, the sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law, but thanks be to God, he gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus is the great victor. [00:16:24] (26 seconds)
The story of the divine warrior is a story of the divine warrior. The story of this divine warrior, El Gabor, does not culminate in the manger. The story doesn't culminate in the cross or even the empty tomb. The story of this divine warrior culminates when Jesus, our mighty God, comes back again. And he's coming back. [00:18:46] (24 seconds)
