Good morning, Augustine! It's good to see you. Thank you for last week. I watched your sermon, and it was very good. I love the fact that you opened it up with a joke about not knowing English well. You said to be confident in yourself and that English is the only language you know. If you mess up, we'll let you know. Thank you for being here. I'm looking forward to a great afternoon with you at the picnic, just hanging out and getting to know each other.
Now, let's turn in our Bibles to Luke chapter 9. In this chapter, there is a story about a guy named Rabbi. He was a Nobel Prize winner in science. One day, his friend asked him how he became a scientist and found his passion for science. Rabbi got up and said that when he was in school, his mom would always ask him what went on in school. Instead of being more interested in what he learned, his mom would ask if he asked a good question that day. That's something parents should be interested in. We should ask our kids what they learned and if they asked good questions.
Jesus is also going to ask a good question in this story. I want you to be thinking, if Jesus were to ask you a question, how would you answer it? What would you do? How would you respond? Jesus is going to ask his disciples a good question, and we'll get to that later in the sermon. But it's important for us to think about how we would answer if Jesus asked us a question.
Now, let's bring some context into Luke chapter 9. We looked at Luke chapter 8 for the last couple of weeks, and Jesus demonstrated his power over various things—family, storms, demons, doctors, and even death. He displayed that he is the one in authority. Now, in Luke chapter 9, Jesus challenges his disciples to go and do what they have seen him do. He sends them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal and help those in need.
In this chapter, Jesus is getting ready to leave Galilee and head towards Jerusalem. He wants to make a big impact before he goes, so he sends his disciples out to reach the people in Galilee. The news of Jesus and the miracles performed by the disciples spread, and even Herod the tetrarch heard about it. He was perplexed and wanted to see Jesus perform some miracles.
But instead of giving in to Herod's request, Jesus takes advantage of the opportunity and teaches the crowd about the kingdom of God and heals those in need. The day goes by, and the disciples come to Jesus and suggest sending the crowd away to find lodging and food. Jesus responds by telling them to give the crowd something to eat. The disciples say they only have two fish and five loaves of bread, but Jesus tells them to have everyone sit down in groups, and he proceeds to perform the miracle of feeding the 5000.
There are a few lessons we can learn from this story. First, we should follow the disciples' example and see the needs around us. Second, we should take those needs to Jesus and wait for his response. Third, when Jesus asks us what we have, we should not say that we have nothing, but recognize that we have something to offer and take responsibility for meeting the need. Finally, we should rejoice in the excess and the impact that God can make through our obedience.
In conclusion, imagine what God can do with you when you give him your little and take responsibility for meeting the needs around you. Don't walk away after giving the need to Jesus, but wait for his response and offer what you have. By doing so, you will see God's miraculous work and be a blessing to others. Thank you for listening, and let's pray together.
