Remember a time that maybe you didn't have freedom and how that He came and broke the chains and set you free.
Maybe you're here today watching online. You'd love to be here, but you just feel like there are things that have bound you down, or maybe distance or whatever it is.
And we want to pray for you today as well as pray for needs that are in the house.
I know sometimes life can get tough. We go through things all week long. You get a report that you didn't want to get. Something breaks, and you think, boy, there goes more money. How are we going to do that?
And all of those issues. Or maybe even on the way here, you had a conflict with your family or your wife or your kids, and you come here today and you just feel the weight of that.
Well, you know, there's like, I think 60-something times in the Bible—I've got to re-look at that—it says "one another." In other words, pray for one another, encourage one another, and believe in one another.
So we want to do that today. And sometimes people are really a little embarrassed about asking for prayer. So we kind of do that now.
Just simply in a minute, I'm going to ask you to raise your hand if you have a prayer need. You don't have to talk about it. You don't have to explain it to anyone, but it's just simply saying, "I acknowledge that I have a prayer need and I can't handle this by myself," or "I don't want to handle it by myself."
You know, sometimes we can handle it, but we just like for the Lord to get the glory out of that.
So if that's you today and you say, "You know, I have a need. I have a prayer need—financial, physical, spiritual," just raise your hand and keep it up.
Don't be embarrassed. Just keep it up high.
And those of you that are standing around someone with their hand up, would you just go and lay your hand gently on their shoulder, on their arm? You don't have to ask them anything. You don't have to talk to them. You're just going to pray for them right now.
And those of you that are online, just lift your hand right where you're sitting, right where you're standing, or maybe some of you even in bed this morning. Just raise your hand, and we want to pray.
Father, we pray today for the hands that are raised. These are people that simply say, "I have a need in my life."
And Lord, we just sang that song about Your faithfulness and how much that You love us, and we could never do anything to stop Your love.
And so, Lord, it's not because we want to bother You today, but You said for us to bring—you said, "Cast all of your cares upon Me."
So Lord, we just bring that today, and we pray for one another.
And I especially pray for those of you that are online today, and maybe you're there in your home and you say, "You know what? Boy, I'd love to be in church," but physically you're not able to do that, or maybe the distance, or maybe all week long you've been struggling, maybe with a physical issue.
And I pray healing right now. I pray comfort of God right now into your life.
I pray the Holy Spirit just come into that room and overshadow.
And I pray for those of you that have your hands raised here in this service today. I pray the Holy Spirit would just come and overshadow you right now and refill you and touch you.
And by His stripes, you're made whole.
I rebuke that infirmity in the name of Jesus. I rebuke that sickness in the name of Jesus.
And I pray breakthrough today in the name of Jesus, that He breaks that sickness, that He sets you free, that He delivers you today in the name of Jesus.
In the name of Jesus.
Well, if you received that today, would you just raise your hands and let's just thank God?
Let's just thank Him this morning.
Let's just thank Him.
Now, here at the Father's house, we honor our young men and our young women who go to serve our great nation.
And so we have an honor today. Tim, Brenda's grandson, Dorian, you guys come on up.
Dorian catches a bus in the morning, heads off to the army. Isn't that great?
Let's give him a hand.
So we're going to pray for him today, and we've got several of our military guys here. They're just going to lay hands on him and pray, and if anybody has a word, you can just speak to Dorian.
But stretch out your hand, and let's just pray.
Father, we come to You right now. We thank You, first of all, that we live in a country that we have freedom.
We have a country, Lord, that we can worship You in freedom.
We all don't have to believe the same way, but Lord, we just thank You right now.
We pray for Dorian. That's a big decision that he's made to do this and step out in this.
And so we just put him in Your hands, and we ask You to bring his destiny in clear view as he's been struggling with what that is.
And God, we just cover him right now.
And as these guys lay hands on him, they know what he's getting ready to go through.
So we just pray that You would strengthen him, that You would believe in him.
And church, this week we want to pray for Dorian. Speak his name right now, Dorian, so you know how to pray for him, alright?
God, we just thank You for that right now.

All right. Well, you guys look great today. If I haven't told you lately, I just want to say that I love you, and Anita and I love you.
We're so glad that God has brought us together on this journey to make a difference in this world, to encourage people, to make a difference in this world, to make a difference in this world.
To be there.
We've been, we're going to finish up today this series we've been on, the Bible Bootcamp. I hope you've really enjoyed that.
And I hope that you've had time to just pour into the book of Philippians.
We took four weeks, and there are four chapters.
And so today I just want to kind of, I don't know, just kind of walk with you through the notes that are in my Bible of what I've gleaned.
I took a fresh brand new Bible for this study of Philippians because I wanted to do fresh notes and look at those.
And so I just want to kind of share with you today.
So this will be a little bit of different type of teaching. I don't have like detailed notes.
I do have, I gave them to the last minute. The girls did a good job.
Just four key words or four key phrases I want to look at today.
And I just entitled this today, "Be a thermostat, not a thermometer."
There's a big difference in a thermostat or a thermometer.
A thermostat registers the temperature, right?
If it's like we're sitting there and, you know, like the temperature is like 77, last night Anita says to Alexa, "Alexa, turn the thermostat to 75."
And Alexa says, "Thermostat has changed to 75."
And the thermostat changed the atmosphere.
All of a sudden from hot 77, it began to get really nice temperature in the room.
But a lot of times people in life are just thermometers, and they're always measuring what they're going through and giving a detail.
It's like, "Man, I'm just going through this, and I'm going through that, and I'm going through this, and I'm going through that."
It's never about a change.
And I think that when I studied the book of Philippians, and you have for the last month, I believe we could say Paul was a great thermostat.
He simply said, "I'm not going to let my circumstances and my surrounding, I'm not going to let the temperature of what's happening to me right now to set my life."
And so he begins talking to us about this word called joy, and we'll describe that in just a little bit.
But let me, some of you may be new today, so let me give you a little background and get your Bibles out to the book of Philippians because we're going to look at a lot of scriptures today.
And I encourage you to underline, highlight, make a note on the areas where God says you.
I'm going to encourage you to bring your Bible because we're going to be doing more like that, less notes on the screen, and more you making notes in your Bible because I'm not here to impress you today.
I'm here to equip you to do what God has called you to do.
So let me remind you that Philippians chapter 4 really was birthed in Acts chapter 16.
Say Acts 16.
Do you remember the story in Acts 16?
Go back and read that again sometime, but I want to show you a little map up here because that might help us a little bit.
So in Acts chapter 16, Paul begins to say, "Hey, we were living in the area of around Derbe, and we went to Lystra and then up to Iconium."
And he said, "From there, I really wanted to go down into the area of Asia," but he said, "the Holy Spirit wouldn't let me go down to the area of Turkey," was what he was talking about.
So he said, "I wanted to go there, but the Lord wouldn't let me to go there."
So he said, "We went on up into the area of Sardis and all this, and I wanted to go up to Masaya, which is another word for northern Asia."
And he said, "But the Holy Spirit again stopped me."
Paul wanted to carry the word into Asia, but God said, "Nope, not going to do that."
So he said, "We went up to Troas, and at Troas, he said, I had a dream, and I had a dream, and there was a man from Macedonia that said, 'Hey Paul, come over to Macedonia,' which is the area of Greece."
And so Paul went across the sea to Philippi.
And so when he got to Philippi, I'm sure he started looking for the man in his dream and walked around, maybe tapped a guy on the shoulder, and he said, "I'm going to go to Macedonia."
And he said, "Oh, you're not the one. No, you're not the one."
And maybe for a couple of days he walked around, he didn't find anybody.
And then it was Sunday, so it's time to worship.
So there was no synagogue in Philippi at that time because to have a synagogue, you had to have 10 mature Jewish men.
So if you didn't have a synagogue, they always met by the river or someplace by the water.
And so he goes down by the river, and there he doesn't meet any men, but he meets a bunch of women that are starting the church.
You know, thank God for women.
And so he met a woman by the name of Lydia who was very wealthy.
She dealt in purple, and to deal in purple, you were pretty wealthy.
It was an ink that you couldn't find very many places.
And so Paul shared the gospel.
We sing about that in the first song today, the good news.
He shared the gospel, and she became a convert.
Well, he preached, revival began happening, and remember he got arrested.
He and Silas were beaten, thrown in prison, chained, told, "Don't ever preach this again."
Remember?
And at midnight, Paul and Silas, what were they doing?
Praising God and singing, and the chains fell off of them.
The doors opened to the prison—not only his cell doors, but all the cell doors to everybody in the prison.
Here's what I'm going to find.
Here's what you're going to find out.
When you find yourself in a prison somewhere where you're confined and you start praising God, it's not only going to set you free, but it's going to set other people free because they're going to wonder, "What's that song? If somebody could sing in the middle of a prison, no way."
So the jailer then panics because he knows that if all these prisoners leave, then he's going to be killed.
So he gets a sword; he's ready to kill himself.
And somehow God reveals this to Paul, and Paul said, "Hey, don't kill yourself. We're still here. We're not going anywhere."
And so as a result of that, then he gets out of prison.
They say in the morning, they come and say, "You can leave now."
Just go on.
Paul said, "Heck, I'm not leaving. You arrested a Roman citizen. You beat a Roman citizen, and I'm not leaving until the town authorities come and ask us to leave ourselves."
I think Paul had a little crusty side to him too, okay?
I think it's all right to get a little upset every once in a while.
And so they release him, and they don't hear from Paul for two years.
So in that time, Paul continues to preach.
Paul continues to get beaten.
Paul then is confined in prison again, but this time he said, "I want to appeal to the emperor."
And so they put him on a boat, and they take him to Rome, and they put him in a Roman prison.
Now Paul is chained to two Roman centurions, part of the Praetorian Guard, the Secret Service of the Church.
And so in prison, this book about rejoicing was written—not on a trip to Cancun.
It was not written in the famous vacation place that you would like, but this book that we've been studying for the last four weeks was written in a prison cell.
And Paul had marks on his arm from the chains, and he wrote this blessed book.
And what he's saying, "I want you to be a thermostat. Don't let the temperature of what you're going through steal your joy."
You see, there's a lot of things the devil can steal, but he can't steal your joy.
You have to surrender your joy.
You have to say, "Oh, this is more than I counted on. This is too hard. This is too difficult."
So that's this whole book that Paul is saying.
So he talks about this word rejoice, and there in your notes, the key word is rejoice.
And they're in your notes, the key word is rejoice or joy.
And it's found 16 times in 104 verses.
And here's what it means.
I love this definition.
Biblical joy is more than a happy feeling.
Say more than a happy feeling.
People say, "You know, well, I don't have much joy, you know, because things are just crowding in on me. I feel so confined."
No, biblical joy is more than a happy feeling.
It's a lasting emotion that comes from the choice to trust that God will fulfill His promise.
I love, I wrote this down in my margin of my Bible.
It's a good feeling in the soul produced by the Holy Spirit, causing me to see my completeness in Christ as He's working within me.
So let's jump into this book today.
And I want to give you, what did I call this?
Four attitudes to maintain your joy.
Four attitudes to maintain your joy.
Anybody ever had a situation in your life that your joy slipped away?
Boy, I have, right?
I think it's something we have to renew every day, isn't it?
There's a difference in happiness and joy.
Happiness happens because of my happenstance.
If everything is going good, then I'm happy.
And I like to be happy.
We like that.
We like that song, right?
Happy, happy, happy, whatever it is.
But better than happy is joy.
Because joy is an inner quality that I realize that because Christ, the Holy Spirit lives within me, I can handle any situation that comes my way.
So four points today.
You can make them four chapter titles if you want.
Number one would be pursue purpose with passion.
Pursue purpose with passion, or you might write in your margin, stay focused on the mission.
Say that with me.
Stay focused on the mission.
See, when difficulties come in our life, we have to remind ourselves, "I have a purpose. I have a purpose."
So let's see what Paul says in chapter one, verse one.
You got your Bibles out?
You ready?
Got your Bibles with you?
Hold them up.
Let me see it.
You have your iPhone, whatever you have.
You have it memorized.
Some of you are so good, you got the Bible memorized.
So if you'll let me know what the chapter, what was verse one saying from your memory?
So here's what he says: "Paul and Timothy, bond servants."
Underline that word, bond servants.
And your Bible may say slave.
It's the Greek word doulos, D-O-U-L-O-S, doulos.
It just simply means that I'm a slave.
I'm a slave.
I'm a servant of Jesus Christ.
So what he says, "I know my purpose. I used to use all my energies to persecute the church. Now I'm using all my energies for the purpose of letting people know."
Yeah.
I know that Jesus loves them.
He cares for them.
And I mean, didn't you love that song?
What's the words of that song?
He'll kick down the wall.
He'll jump over the wall.
All that sort of stuff to find us.
All of those things.
Paul said, "He knocked me off of my ass in a biblical sense."
Remember, he was riding along, and the Lord knocked him off and blinded him.
Paul, who thought he could see so clearly, needed to be blinded so he could see his real purpose.
And Jesus called him.
Can you imagine?
He called the farthest person that would be away from who you would think would become a convert.
Who's that for you?
Who's that came up in your mind?
So Paul says, "Here's my purpose. I'm a slave. I'm a servant to Jesus Christ."
And so he's writing this book to the church at Philippi.
He said, "I thank my God upon every remembrance."
Would you underline that?
Every remembrance.
Every remembrance of you.
He said, "When I think of you, all I can do is give God thanks."
I would say, "Time out. Do you remember what happened in Philippi?
Do you remember that you were beaten?
Do you remember that you were put in prison?"
And I mean, in my mind, when there's countries, I've been to 75 countries, nations of this world, and there are some of them that when I remember that place, I certainly am not happy.
I just feel like I would like to just puke.
I mean, if I were Paul, I would think about the memory of being in Philippi would make me, but no, he said, "No, circumstances, circumstances that I go through, they don't define me."
But he said, "When I think of you, every remembrance of you, in all of my prayers, and I'm making a request for you, with all joy for your fellowship or your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now."
Verse six, would you read it out loud with me?
"Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it unto the day of Jesus Christ."
And then he goes on to say in verse nine, "And this I pray, that your love may abound more and more in the knowledge and the discernment that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere without offense to the day of Christ, being filled with all the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ to the glory and praise of God."
Basically, what he's saying is, "I want you to stay of one mind, stay one focus."
James chapter one, verse eight says something like this: "A double-minded man is what? Unstable in all his ways."
So today, I think one of the key things of understanding of my joy is understanding the one thing: I'm a slave.
I'm a doulos. I'm a slave to Jesus.
He said in verse 12, "But I wanted you to know, brethren, that the things which happened to me—things, things."
What's he saying there?
He's talking about being in prison because he goes on to talk about that.
"The things that happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel, so that it has become evident to the whole palace guard."
I love little words like that, "the whole palace guard."
The palace guard that he's talking here about is the praetorian soldiers.
They were the elite.
They were the secret service of the emperor at that particular time.
And so they were chained, they were chained with chains to Paul on each side for six-hour shifts.
Six hours as Paul is talking to Timothy in the prison there with him and his other guests, they would let guests come in.
And as Paul is writing—or the scribe is writing the book of Philippi, he's saying, "I remember that."
And he said, "Look, because of what's happened to me in the Roman prison, you see, we would think, 'Oh God, reach the emperor, reach Rome, reach inside the palace.'"
And we think that, "Well, God's going to maybe send a great revival."
But here's what he's doing.
He says, "Because of my chains, because of what I'm going through, he says, look, it's been known to all the people—all the palace and the prison guard that my chains are in Christ."
And most of the brethren in the Lord have become confident by my chains, much more bold to speak the word without fear.
Paul said, "I just got to talk about this."
Paul said, "Here I am, I'm chained, I'm chained."
And I wonder, I wonder what that would be like for you.
Maybe today, maybe today you feel like you're chained to something.
Maybe you're chained to sickness, or you're chained to a financial crisis, or you're chained to a problem that you wish would go away.
Here's what I know about being a servant and a slave to Jesus.
He will do one of two things when you find yourself chained.
He will either set you free from the chain, or He will use you as a slave.
He will use your chain as a stage to display His glory.
Somebody needed to see what you were going through to bring them encouragement for their life.
I look at some of the great people today that God uses so greatly to write books and write songs.
And there are people that have been hit with affliction or sickness or disease, and they haven't been healed.
They haven't been set free.
When we read that great chapter of the heroes of faith, we read of great heroes like Elijah and some of the others.
And then he goes on to say, "But such were some."
They were sawed in two.
They were crucified.
They were hung for the glory of God.
So I don't know today why you feel that you're in chains.
I'm thinking of Suzanne Wesley.
She birthed 17 kids out of the same womb.
That's a woman.
17 kids.
Now you could feel a little chained to that situation.
17 kids I got to take care of.
How would I ever have time to be with God?
When you read the story of Suzanne Wesley, you'll read of how that she would sit in her favorite chair.
She wore an apron.
She'd take the apron and she'd put it over her head.
That was a sign to all of her kids and everybody else, "Spend time with Him."
Chained to 17 kids.
But out of that came two of the greatest men to bring in revival, Charles and John Wesley.
So I'm talking to somebody today.
And you're saying, "I rebuke you, devil. This is not of you."
Now listen.
It's a fine line.
And I'm really asking God how that I can communicate this.
I believe in divine healing.
By His stripes, we're healed.
I'll confess that.
I'm believing that.
I'm believing that for my neck, the two years I've been struggling with.
I'm believing that for my knee.
I'm believing that for other afflictions that I've had that have been ongoing for a long time.
And I'm believing, I'll believe until I die or I'm healed that Jesus heals.
But I also know that in His economy of eternity, sometimes He chooses certain people.
And He says, "I'm going to let your chains be a platform from which that I can get glory and build my kingdom."
Six hours.
Paul is chained to a soldier.
Six-hour shift, they'd come in and change.
But for six hours, they can't stop Paul talking about Jesus.
But I wonder what we talk about in our chains.
"I can't believe God. I can't believe God. I can't believe this happened to me. Why me? Why am I going through this? Why am I going through this difficulty?"
Not Paul.
He's saying, "Write this down. Tell people to rejoice."
Yeah, rejoice.
And I'm sure those Roman soldiers looked at those chains and thought, "You've got to be out of your freaking mind. How can you rejoice? Do you realize your time?"
And so Paul said, "Being with these soldiers, many of them have given up. They're all on their hearts to Jesus."
I can just imagine some of those soldiers after the six-hour shift ends, then another one comes and says, "Okay, it's my turn."
You say, "Oh, don't worry. Let me take your shift today."
Because you see, he's realized he's chained to someone that's bigger than his circumstances.
So I wonder what you're going through right now that the Lord wants to either one of two things.
He either wants to break the chains off of you, or He wants to take your life off of you to use the change for His glory.
And if you're a slave to Him, you'd say, "Lord, in whatever situation, I'm believing for healing. I'm believing for breakthrough. But if it doesn't happen in this life, as Job said, 'Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him,' because I'm pursuing with a passion the purpose that He's called me."
I don't know how I would have handled that.
And, you know, I don't want to make a big issue, but after Paul talks about this, he says that, you know, people have been bold to preach.
And then he said in verse 15, he said, "Some speak and preach from a wrong motive, from selfish ambition."
So Paul said, "I realize there's people that are using themselves to get glory and preaching Jesus."
And you're questioning, "They don't have a right motive. How can they build a church? How can they do that when it's all about them?"
You know what I'm talking about.
You know people that preach Jesus, but yet everything revolves around them.
You're no different than I am.
You look at that situation, you say, "But Lord, their motive is so wrong. They're so selfish."
Paul says, "Look at this."
In verse 18, basically saying, "Really, what does it matter? If Christ is preached, then stop judging and just rejoice."
Verse 21 is the theme verse of all the Philippians.
"For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain."
He said, "It's all about that."
Now let's look at chapter two.
In chapter two, I guess I would look at this as a second thing would be develop a mindset.
I would look at this as a second thing would be develop a mindset.
Develop the mindset of Christ.
Develop the mindset of Christ.
In chapter two, beginning at verse one, he says, "Therefore, if there's any consolation," the word there is encouragement.
"If there's any encouragement in Christ, any comfort of love, any mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, by being like-minded."
Having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind, let nothing be done through selfish ambition.
What does your translation say there?
Selfish ambition.
In other words, he's saying, and if you've got a spirit-filled study Bible, it'll take you back to verse 16.
Selfish ambition describes the person who's concerned only with their own welfare and will resort to any method for winning followers or getting noticed.
That's what he's saying.
But he's saying, "Let this mind be in you, which is also in Christ."
We live in a world of selfies today, don't we?
Selfish.
I'm going to take a picture.
Got to get the setting just right.
I got to put the—what's the thing you put on there that makes you look better than you really are?
Yeah, the filter.
Just so you know, I look.
And so if it's a guy, it's usually like some sort of muscular pose, you know?
And if it's a woman, usually on hand on the hip and then duck lips.
I've never—duck lips.
Do you have any idea how many selfies are posted on social media in one day?
I don't know who counted these up, but 93 million a day.
Now there's nothing wrong with standing up.
There's nothing wrong with showing where you are and doing all of that.
Those are all fun things.
We live, I live vicariously.
Thank you.
There are a lot of people who are done doing fun things, i.e. Kevin and Melissa.
They do a lot of fun things.
I say, "Show me more, show me more."
But it's never about them.
I've never seen them say, "Look at me."
But here's what I'm saying.
Are we living a life in which we want everybody to look at us and see us?
Or is it we want people to see that we're a slave of Jesus?
We have His mind.
Jesus wasn't arrogant.
Paul goes on to say in this passage, "Let's be like Jesus. Let this mind be in you, or this attitude, this attitude is another translation there, which is also in Christ Jesus, who being in the form of God did not consider robbery to be equal with God."
In other words, it was the internal quality of Jesus.
He always was God, and He always will be God.
And when He came to this earth, He did not give up His deity.
He was fully God and fully man, fully.
But the scripture says, "But He made Himself."
Another translation said He emptied Himself of no reputation, taken on the form of a bondservant, a doulos, coming in the likeness of men and being found in appearance as a man.
He humbled Himself.
Look at that.
He humbled Himself to the point of death, even the death on the cross.
Therefore, God has highly exalted Him and given Him a name that is above every name.
That at the name of—say it—at the name of—say it again—every knee in heaven, those on earth, those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.
He says, "You know how to maintain your joy?
Develop the attitude of Jesus.
Instead of saying, 'Why is this happening? Why is this happening? Why is this happening to me?'
Saying, 'Lord, if this is not of You, I rebuke it and I cast it out of my life.
But if this is something You want me to walk through so that my life could be a testimony.'"
I don't know why I went through a divorce.
I never signed up for a divorce.
I fought against it.
God hates divorce.
I did everything I could.
My ex-wife at that time had an affair with my best friend.
She left, took my kids.
I worked nine months to get her to divorce.
I worked nine months to get her back.
There was no reason I should.
She said, "I never loved you.
I only married you to get out of town."
But I said, "But I know that God hates divorce."
So she came back.
She said, "I'll come back, but I don't love you.
We just can't make it financially."
For five years, I worked with everything I had until when Rick Godwin came by.
He said, "Terry, you don't even know who you are.
You've lost your identity.
She's going to leave you again."
And she did.
She left me again.
And I look back on that and I say, "I didn't sign up for that.
I never wanted divorce.
On the itinerary of my life, I despise the area of divorce."
Because as soon as you say that, then people judge you.
You're going to hear about Simone's new book coming out.
She'll do a book signing very soon, talking about being delivered.
It's a story.
I won't, you know, it's not a story.
It's her life.
Just like Ben's book on James, The Thunder, or the Gates of Hell is his life.
I don't know why I said that.
I don't even have it in my notes.
Somebody needed to hear that.
Because you're going through stuff that you don't want to go through.
But I had people come up to me later and say, "How'd you do that?
How'd you take her back?
Knowing that she doesn't love you, start to kiss her for five years."
And I said, "I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know."
I don't know.
