God's Open Invitation: Prioritizing His Kingdom
Summary
### Summary
Welcome, everyone! It's a joy to be here with you today. I want to share a story from the Gospel of Luke, a parable about a great dinner party prepared by God. Despite the grand invitation, the initial guests were too busy with their own lives to attend. This disappointed and angered the host, who then extended the invitation to everyone, regardless of their social status or background. This parable teaches us about God's inclusive love and the importance of accepting His invitation to be part of His kingdom.
In the 1970s, disco was more than just a dance phenomenon; it was a social movement. People would stand in line for hours to get into exclusive clubs like Studio 54. Similarly, God's party is open to all, but many of the "right" people are too busy to attend. This story challenges us to prioritize our relationship with God above all else. The Jewish people were initially God's chosen, but now, through Jesus, we are all invited to be part of His kingdom.
I shared a personal story about my anxiety over a basement party in seventh grade, which turned out well despite my fears. Imagine God's disappointment when His beloved people don't show up to His extraordinary banquet. Jesus gives us everything for nothing, and our job is to stand up for Him, making Him our first priority. C.S. Lewis and G.K. Chesterton remind us that the worst sins are those we are unaware of, and confession is crucial.
Jesus calls us friends, not just servants. We must be clear about who we are and let our actions align with our words. The second round of invitations in the parable extends to all the wrong people, teaching us humility and the importance of being the light of the world. We are challenged to invite and welcome everyone, especially those who feel unworthy. Sharing our faith magnifies it, and we must be preoccupied with saving all people.
Tim Keller once asked if we would share the cure for cancer if we had it. We have something even more valuable—the Word of God. Let's share it with everyone we meet.

Devotional
### Day 1: God's Boundless Invitation
God's invitation to His kingdom is open to everyone, regardless of their social status or background. This inclusivity reflects God's boundless love and challenges us to extend that same love to others. The parable of the great dinner party in Luke illustrates this beautifully. The initial guests, who were too busy with their own lives, missed out on the grand banquet. In response, the host extended the invitation to everyone, including those who were often overlooked or marginalized. This act of inclusivity is a powerful reminder of God's unconditional love and the importance of welcoming all into His kingdom. [03:03]
Luke 14:21-23 (ESV): "So the servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and crippled and blind and lame.’ And the servant said, ‘Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.’ And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled.'"
Reflection: Think of someone in your life who feels unworthy or excluded. How can you extend God's inclusive love to them today?
### Day 2: Prioritizing God Over Worldly Distractions
Many of the initial guests in the parable were too busy with their own lives to attend God's banquet. This serves as a reminder to prioritize our relationship with God above all else, avoiding the distractions that can lead us away from Him. In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to get caught up in our daily routines, work, and social obligations. However, these distractions can prevent us from fully experiencing God's presence and blessings. By making God our top priority, we can ensure that we are always ready to accept His invitation and be part of His kingdom. [06:14]
Matthew 6:33 (ESV): "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."
Reflection: Identify one distraction in your life that is keeping you from prioritizing your relationship with God. What steps can you take today to minimize this distraction and focus more on Him?
### Day 3: The Pain of Disappointment
Just as one might feel disappointed when fearing no one would attend a personal event, imagine God's disappointment when His beloved people don't show up to His extraordinary banquet. Our actions can deeply affect God's heart, and we should strive not to disappoint Him. This perspective helps us understand the emotional aspect of our relationship with God. He has prepared a magnificent banquet for us, and our absence not only affects us but also grieves Him. By being mindful of this, we can better appreciate the importance of our presence and participation in God's kingdom. [08:23]
Isaiah 65:2 (ESV): "I spread out my hands all the day to a rebellious people, who walk in a way that is not good, following their own devices."
Reflection: Reflect on a time when you felt disappointed by someone's absence. How can this experience help you understand God's feelings when we neglect our relationship with Him?
### Day 4: Humility and Being the Light of the World
The second round of invitations in the parable extends to all the wrong people, teaching us humility and the importance of being the light of the world. We are called to invite and welcome everyone, especially those who feel unworthy. This act of humility not only aligns us with God's will but also allows us to be a beacon of His love and grace to others. By embracing humility, we can better serve God's purpose and help others see the light of His kingdom. [12:23]
Matthew 5:14-16 (ESV): "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."
Reflection: Think of someone who feels unworthy or overlooked. How can you be a light in their life and help them feel welcomed and valued?
### Day 5: Sharing Our Faith Magnifies It
Sharing our faith with others not only helps them grow but also magnifies our own faith. We are challenged to be preoccupied with saving all people, just as God is. This act of sharing is a powerful way to live out our faith. When we share the Word of God, we are not only spreading His message but also reinforcing our own beliefs and commitment. This mutual growth strengthens the community and brings us closer to God's vision for His kingdom. [13:57]
1 Peter 3:15 (ESV): "But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect."
Reflection: Think of one person you can share your faith with today. How can you approach this conversation with gentleness and respect, ensuring it is a positive and uplifting experience for both of you?

### Quotes for outreach
1. "The extraordinary banquet that he spent so much of himself preparing. This is the king of the universe, the master of everything, the creator of all life who gives us everything from the very breath we breathe to the forever life that is the promise of Christianity. Mark mentioned it last week in his awesome message. Jesus gives us everything for nothing, and had he not restored life, we would literally be dead." [08:23](35 seconds)(Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
2. "Job one for Christians is to stand up for Jesus. Commandment one is to stand up for Jesus. Commandment two is to seek him in the name of Jesus Christ. The same is true for godhead, a man who has no idols, no other priorities, no excuses. Most critical to locking in our identity, our identity in him, is to make him our first priority." [09:24](16 seconds)(Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
3. "Another saying that's been kicking around for years is that God gives you the gift of life and what you do with your life is your gift back to God. So of course, we've all been disappointed by some. And we know that disappointment hurts. It's especially painful when a good friend breaks their word. It's disheartening when a reliable person in our lives becomes unreliable." [10:46](31 seconds)(Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
4. "Luke says that the second time the servants went into the streets and the alleys, all of the gross places of a town. Today, and we just sang about it, today I picture them going into the streets to find the lost and the lonely, to find the addicts and the prostitutes and those just plain ignorant of God's mercy. We've all got all three kinds of people wherever we live, but especially out near where I live in Siler City, and who knows, we may be out there one day speaking Jesus." [12:23](36 seconds)(Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
5. "Some people don't know that the party is so good because they don't know who's throwing it. Some people don't come because they don't know yet that the Son of God would have any part of them. Thank God he is a part of all of us. Do you know anybody like that? You probably do, because you and I were once one of those people. Pure grace, yes. But I noticed the invitation of Jesus to come to the party. Jesus is always followed by a challenge." [13:57](33 seconds)(Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
### Quotes for members
1. "Christians post-Jesus are now God's chosen people. So, it's important that we relate to our Jewish brothers and sisters as the chosen people, because along with them now, God has chosen us. And that's no small thing. Did you know when we say amen, we are saying yes to God? We are saying yes, God. We are your people, and we will get it done. And I think it's really important. We would all agree. We would all agree that we don't disappoint God." [07:29](34 seconds)(Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
2. "One of my favorite authors, CS Lewis writes that the worst sins are those of which we we are unaware. That's why confession is so important. Deep, confession. The most destructive idols are the ones that sneak into our hearts and find a comfortable place in our soul." [09:24](23 seconds)(Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
3. "So anything we love more than Jesus and anything that disadvantages his kingdom greatly disappoints us, even angers him because of his deep and abiding love for us. So the second round of invitations extends to all the wrong people, the people you wouldn't expect at God's party. Not only is Luke giving a lesson in humility, a core value of Christianity, he's challenging us to be the light of the world." [12:23](29 seconds)(Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
4. "Luke is teaching today to share in God's preoccupation to save all people. We know from our own experience that anything we share, love, hate, faith, doubt, grace, it's magnified. By the simple act of sharing it, and that's what we teach our children. We hear a lot today about artificial intelligence, but we have OI, the original intelligence. For us, the Word of God is the original intelligence. A complete set of directions, the quintessential owner's manual." [15:36](39 seconds)(Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
5. "And last I checked, there's still one comment that I want to share with you. I want to share a psalm with you. I want to share a psalm with you. I want to share a psalm with you.
### Key Takeaways
1. **God's Inclusive Invitation**: The parable of the great dinner party in Luke teaches us that God's invitation to His kingdom is open to everyone, regardless of their social status or background. This inclusivity reflects God's boundless love and challenges us to extend that same love to others. [03:03]
2. **Prioritizing God Over Worldly Distractions**: Many of the initial guests in the parable were too busy with their own lives to attend God's banquet. This serves as a reminder to prioritize our relationship with God above all else, avoiding the distractions that can lead us away from Him. [06:14]
3. **The Pain of Disappointment**: Just as I felt disappointed when I feared no one would attend my seventh-grade party, imagine God's disappointment when His beloved people don't show up to His extraordinary banquet. Our actions can deeply affect God's heart, and we should strive not to disappoint Him. [08:23]
4. **Humility and Being the Light of the World**: The second round of invitations in the parable extends to all the wrong people, teaching us humility and the importance of being the light of the world. We are called to invite and welcome everyone, especially those who feel unworthy. [12:23]
5. **Sharing Our Faith Magnifies It**: Sharing our faith with others not only helps them grow but also magnifies our own faith. We are challenged to be preoccupied with saving all people, just as God is. This act of sharing is a powerful way to live out our faith. [13:57]

This is the king of the universe, the master of everything, the creator of all life who gives us everything from the very breath we breathe to the forever life that is the promise of Christianity. Mark mentioned it last week in his awesome message. Jesus gives us everything for nothing, and had he not restored life, we would literally be dead." 2.
We've all got all three kinds of people wherever we live, but especially out near where I live in Siler City, and who knows, we may be out there one day speaking Jesus." 5.

Howdy, and welcome. Where I'm from in Ohio, we say, "youse guys." Down here, we say, "y'all," and out west, they say, "howdy." So, hey, youse guys, howdy. You're all welcome here.
In case we haven't met, I'm Terry Dorsey, a kind of retired Lutheran pastor, and kind of Lutheran, because I'm here a lot. I'm a partner here at Chatham Community, and I say retired, kind of, because I'm preaching every now and then, here and there, which keeps me out of trouble. And I'm glad I'm here, and I'm glad you're here. It's great to lead worship with Mark and the band. Today's keyboardist, Linda Sands. Linda and I go way back to a big church in Cary, North Carolina. She's my small group leader, along with Steve. We go way back to the 90s in a big church called Christ the King.
I was trained and ordained by the ELCA, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. I was an associate pastor, what we call a mission developer, one who starts new churches. And then I was an intentional interim for 15 years. I traveled all over North Carolina to help churches through transition. Every church, every Lutheran church that I went to, and there were many, I opened with my favorite joke. Our standard greeting in the ELCA is, "The Lord be with you." And the church responds, "And also with you."
And in one church... In one church, they were having trouble with the sound system. So the pastor stood up to the microphone and said, "We're having trouble with the sound system." And the good Lutherans replied, "And also with you."
Chatham Community is super blessed to have such talented pastors and leadership that we love and who do so much and carry a spiritual burden that none of us will ever know. So we keep them in our prayers, and we keep lifting them up.
But I do want to warn you this morning, because Alex and I were having lunch together long before he invited me to worship here. I do want to warn you that if you offer to buy Alex lunch, he will get the $18 steak. Of course, like all of you, Pastor Alex and Jaime, they've changed my life, as has the prayer team. Michael, Carol. My pastor, Bud, Brian, and all of you really do make Chatham Community Church my dream church.
I would think that a party this good would be standing room only and bursting at the seams. And so does Jesus. And that's what I want to talk to you about today. Let me tell you what I mean and why you are essential to the story from Luke. The passage from Luke. Luke is another parable. We know by now that parable is a fancy word for story. God, who we know as Jesus, has for days prepared a great dinner party like no other. It's the kind of party that people would stand in line for if they only knew how good it was.
But despite an invitation from the master, or in some versions the king, and in this version the host, nobody shows. Unfortunately, the host is so very disappointed that everyone is so busy, he becomes angry. And reporting the bad news, he sends his servants out a second time, only this time he instructs them to just invite anybody and everybody. In other words, forget those fancy people. Invite all of the unsophisticated people.
It seems, and you never really want this to happen, but it seems like the boss is a bit insulted and he lowers his standards, which is good for us. But more about that in a minute. Did you catch the documentary on PBS recently about disco? Disco was more than a dance phenomenon in the 70s. It was a whole social movement. I was fascinated by the series because, well, I was a part of it. After college, I worked in rock radio. But while I was in college, I worked as a dancer. I was a DJ at the 2001 nightclub in Toledo.
I got to tell you, running the music and working the lights was a lot of fun. But it was in the 2001 nightclub in New York City that the movie Saturday Night Fever with John Travolta was filmed. Now, don't worry. I did not wear the polyester shirts with the obnoxious collars. I was always more of a jeans and boots kind of guy. But everyone and anyone wanted badly to go to the movies. And I was the only one who was allowed to get in the Studio 54. So much so, they would stand in line till all hours of the night, all hours into the morning, trying desperately to get in.
It was a place to be seen and a place to be. But, of course, the celebrities were escorted in first, followed by the beautiful people. But the owner, Steve Rebell, and his bouncers would not just let anybody in who didn't look right or who wasn't dressed right. Yet, today, they're not. Today, in the story from Luke, it's just the opposite happening. All of the world's beautiful and successful people, all of the right people, had no interest in God's party. They all had an excuse, something else to do.
It was Ben Franklin who wrote, "He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else." All of the hopeful guests, all of the right people, were just too busy doing the right things. They thought that they were living life, but in reality, life was living them. As the old saying goes, either you live life or life lives you. Scholars agree that the master in this story, the host, represents God, and the people who didn't show up were the Jewish people.
Now, that's God's chosen people, and the party symbolizes God's kingdom. But, alas. We should not only thank our Jewish brothers and sisters for ethical monotheism, one God who writes morality and integrity in our hearts, but also for giving us all of the Old and the New Testament. Remember, "No other gods, no other excuses" is the first commandment. Unfortunately, that's where most people veer off the road, even Christians. Christians post-Jesus are now God's chosen people.
So, it's important that we relate to our Jewish brothers and sisters as the chosen people, because along with them now, God has chosen us. And that's no small thing. Did you know when we say "amen," we are saying yes to God? We are saying, "Yes, God. We are your people, and we will get it done." And I think it's really important. We would all agree. We would all agree that we don't disappoint God.
I remember in seventh grade, it was my turn to throw the basement party. That's what kids in Westport, Connecticut did in the late 60s. And for many nights prior, my anxiousness got the best of me, and I had this repeated dream that none of the other kids showed up. It was really very deflating and disappointing. And to this day, I can still remember how sad and disappointed I was in that dream, but I got to tell you, the party actually went quite well.
But can you imagine God's disappointment when his best and most beloved people don't show up to his party? The extraordinary banquet that he spent so much of himself preparing. This is the king of the universe, the master of everything, the creator of all life who gives us everything from the very breath we breathe to the forever life that is the promise of Christianity.
Mark mentioned it last week in his awesome message. Jesus gives us everything for nothing, and had he not restored life, we would literally be dead. Have you seen the signs around? I live in Deep Chatham out near Siler City. Have you seen the signs around that say, "He got up"? There are some that say, "Thank you, Jesus," and others that say, "He got up." Well, the word resurrection literally means "stand up." Job one for Christians is to stand up for Jesus. Commandment one is to stand up for Jesus. Commandment two is to seek him in the name of Jesus Christ.
The same is true for Godhead, a man who has no idols, no other priorities, no excuses. Most critical to locking in our identity, our identity in him, is to make him our first priority. One of my favorite authors, C.S. Lewis, writes that the worst sins are those of which we are unaware. That's why confession is so important. Deep confession. The most destructive idols are the ones that sneak into our hearts and find a comfortable place in our soul.
One of the theologians in the late 1800s, early 1900s was G.K. Chesterton. I guess he was maybe having a bad hair day, I don't know. Or maybe just bedhead and he got stuck with a picture, kind of like your yearbook picture. When a newspaper wanted the Catholic theologian to answer the question, "What's wrong with the world?" he wrote in response, "Dear sirs, I am sincerely G.K. Chesterton."
Another saying that's been kicking around for years is that God gives you the gift of life and what you do with your life is your gift back to God. So, of course, we've all been disappointed by some. And we know that disappointment hurts. It's especially painful when a good friend breaks their word. It's disheartening when a reliable person in our lives becomes unreliable. I don't imagine that Jesus is above those feelings. He has so much to offer and is so disappointed when we don't accept and share him.
In John 15:15, Jesus calls his people friends. Yeah, we are his servants. We are his servants and serve we must. But we are way more than that. We all know the pain when someone that we think is a friend turns out not to be. The damage is double when it's a Christian who breaks their word because Jesus says very clearly, "Let your yes be yes and your no be no." Be clear about who you are and what you say and that your word aligns with your actions.
So anything we love more than Jesus and anything that disadvantages his kingdom greatly disappoints us, even angers him because of his deep and abiding love for us. So the second round of invitations extends to all the wrong people, the people you wouldn't expect at God's party. Not only is Luke giving a lesson in humility, a core value of Christianity, he's challenging us to be the light of the world.
You don't have to imagine Jesus calling you the light and the salt of the world, because he did just that. Luke says that the second time the servants went into the streets and the alleys, all of the gross places of a town. Today, and we just sang about it, today I picture them going into the streets to find the lost and the lonely, to find the addicts and the prostitutes and those just plain ignorant of God's mercy.
We've all got all three kinds of people wherever we live, but especially out near where I live in Siler City, and who knows, we may be out there one day speaking Jesus. The prior passage in Luke challenges us to invite and bring those who can never repay us. Just as today in Jesus's time, lots of people knew nothing about him, and they wouldn't consider themselves worthy to be a welcome guest at any party. Nonetheless, a party thrown by such a king.
This message to us is to invite and welcome our family, our friends, our neighbors, and even our acquaintances. Some people don't know that the party is so good because they don't know who's throwing it. Some people don't come because they don't know yet that the Son of God would have any part of them. Thank God he is a part of all of us. Do you know anybody like that? You probably do, because you and I were once one of those people. Pure grace, yes.
But I noticed the invitation of Jesus to come to the party. Jesus is always followed by a challenge. It's a challenge to first multiply our faith and then to share it with others so that they might grow too. A challenge to give what's been given. We grow deep, and then we grow wide. That's why we're here. Luke is teaching today to share in God's preoccupation to save all people.
We know from our own experience that anything we share—love, hate, faith, doubt, grace—it's magnified. By the simple act of sharing it, and that's what we teach our children. We hear a lot today about artificial intelligence, but we have OI, the original intelligence. For us, the Word of God is the original intelligence. A complete set of directions, the quintessential owner's manual.
We also have spiritually intelligent people who have been teaching, preaching, and writing about the stories of God for hundreds of years, and thank God for them. One of those people is Tim Keller and his wife, Kathy. And while Tim was still with us, Tim asked a question that I've never forgotten. If you had the cure for cancer, would you share it with others?
Tim and his wife, Kathy, wrote a book called The Songs of Jesus about the Psalms. Nicole and I share a psalm with Keller's reflection every morning, and it's life-changing and life-challenging. And last I checked, there's still one comment that I want to share with you. I want to share a psalm with you. I want to share a psalm with you. I want to share a psalm with you. I want to share a psalm with you. I want to share a psalm with you. I want to share a psalm with you. I want to share a psalm with you. I want to share a psalm with you.
