I want to talk about the power of obedience, the power of obedience in the middle of a sermon in our midweek service. And I invite you to be here on Wednesday nights at 7 o'clock for a powerful series that I began last week on the power of a hidden life.

This particular principle, this particular virtue of obedience, and in this particular story, is a major part of our private and personal life. It must be a major part of our private and personal life if we are going to have a productive public life.

We have got to have a productive private life if we're going to be successful before the masses. We're going to have to be successful in our closet. We cannot expect success in society if we are not doing success in our own personal closets through prayer, through the Word of God, through our private and personal devotion, through spending time with God.

It's time out for Sunday-only believers. The devil is too busy. There's too much going on. There are too many tricks and traps. There are too many blockades and barricades set up just for us to be Sunday-only believers.

But we need to have a powerful personal and private life in order to have a powerful productive public life.

The text reveals to us that there was a celebration going on. The Bible said in verse 2 that there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee, and Jesus and his mother were both invited.

The Bible suggests to us that there was a celebration. Some theologians said that it was a marriage feast or it was a reception, and as everybody was gathering together, they were having a good time fellowshipping with one another.

The record is that the wine ran out, and wine, wine, wine is synonymous for joy. Wine in this context is synonymous for happiness, and they were left. They were stuck with a hundred and sixty-two gallons of water.

The disciples did not know what to do, and the Bible suggests, sisters and brothers, that Mary, the mother of Jesus, decided that she was going to intercede. The Bible said that she told them, "Whatsoever Jesus tells you to do, if you want your wine, if you want your joy, if you want your peace, if you want your blessings, if you want your healing, if you want your deliverance, whatsoever the master tells you to do, do it."

And it suggests that there is a great necessity in following instructions, but specifically, it suggests that there is a necessity in following the instructions of the master.

If you are going to receive those things, those blessings that the Lord God has for you and is able to provide for you, we must learn how to follow the codes, the articles, and amendments to the kingdom's constitution.

He is the Word, and if we are going to get our joy, our blessings, we must be obedient.

Now, now, now, now, talking about obedience isn't popular. It won't make you shout, but it'll get you blessed.

And I want to say that what's interesting about this whole thing was in the beginning of the wedding party, the Bible said that Jesus and his mother were invited before time.

I need to say to you, sisters and brothers, first of all, if you're going to be successful, first of all, Jesus has to be invited before your wine runs out.

You've got to have him a vital, visible, and vivid part of your life before your wine runs out. Don't wait until you're drowning in a dreadful ditch of despair. Don't wait until you're broken, busted, and disgusted.

Don't wait until tears are running down your eyes when you wake up and when you get up. Don't wait until enemies get on your trail. Don't wait until your back is up against the wall, but you need Jesus in your life.

You need to get connected before your wine runs out because if you have him before your wine runs out, then you can call on him, and he will show up.

See, you cannot expect VIP privileges if you're not a VIP. For some things to happen, you've got to be a child of the king, not just by creation, but also by redemption.

In other words, you must confess with your mouth, believe with your heart that God has raised Jesus from the dead, then you shall be saved.

Told Nicodemus, it's not enough to be a big shot. It's not enough to be an aristocrat. It's not enough to be a professor, but ye must be born again.

They invited him ahead of time. When they needed him, they had him.

I heard somebody say it's better to have him and not need him than to need him and not have him.

And I need to say to you today is the day that you need him. If you never needed Jesus before, you need him right now.

If there was never a day, if there was never an hour, a minute, a second, a month, or a year that you needed Jesus, you need him right now.

Tell somebody you need him now.

Need him now.

And the Bible said because they had invited Jesus, he was there, and Mary, the mother of Jesus, told the disciples who were distraught, "Whatsoever he tells you to do."

You need some wine. You need your joy. You need a relationship. You need your family fixed. Your bills are past due. Your money is funny, and your change is strange.

You've got sickness in your body and around your body. You've got problems. You need a job. You've got trouble on your job. Your child is acting up.

It's a lot of things that you need, a lot of things that we desire. The key to unlock the door is obedience, and it's right there in the text, the call to perfect obedience.

Somebody shout perfect obedience!

Whatsoever, meaning whatever the thing he tells you to do, whatever the place he tells you to go, whatever the circumstance, whatever the situation, however he tells you to act, it is advantageous.

It is to your benefit for you to do it. He says, "Whatsoever." You need not to have any reservations.

When some folk tell you to do things, you may second-guess. You may have some skepticism. You may have some reservations, but the record is whatever he tells you to do, whatever Jesus the Christ, whatever Christos, the curious, the superintendent, the ruler above all, the man who came that we might have life and have it more abundantly, whatever he tells you to do is in your best interest to do it.

Now, it may sound strange, but just do it.

So the blind man, "I'm going to take some dirt with some spit, and I want you to let me put it on your eye, and then after I'm done, go wash."

And because the blind man followed instruction, because he was obedient to the master, he was healed.

Told Joshua, "Tell the people, y'all get together and march around the wall seven times. Y'all over there stop washing clothes. Y'all over there stop sitting around talking about everybody. Y'all over there, y'all get up from the table. You done ate already twice today. Get up and march around the wall."

I know it's hot outside. I know you don't feel good. I know you're tired, but march around the wall because I've got a city that's tailor-made for you.

I've got a blessing that's yours, but it's on the inside of the wall. And if you want your blessing, you're going to have to march.

And because they marched, the Bible said in chapter 6, the 20th verse, they shouted, and the walls came tumbling down.

May sound strange, but he told Peter to walk on the water.

"Father, wash. Hill is coming down."

Jesus said, "Peter, I bid you come." He stepped out and walked on the water. G. Patterson says it was like he rolled the red carpet out to welcome him and told him to walk on across on the water.

He said, "Stay focused on me," and as soon as he did what Jesus told him not to do, the Bible said he began.

Whatever he tells you to do, somebody shout whatsoever.

He may tell you some stuff like, "Bless those that curse you." I'm talking about folk that you know can't stand you, don't like you. They ain't got nothing good to say to you, and if they can't say it, they'll do it with their eyes.

He says, "Bless them." He said in Matthew 5:44, he said something else in that same verse. He said, "Do good to those that hate you."

Tell somebody, "You know that sounds strange."

You mean to tell me you done dug a ditch for me, you lied on me, you are trying to rob me of my joy, you are scandalizing my name, you will curse me to my face, and if you ask me for fifty dollars, I'm supposed to give it to you?

If you say you need a ride down the street, I'm supposed to do it for you?

If somebody passes away in your family, you mean to tell me I'm supposed to show up at the funeral and comfort you?

It says I must do good to those who hate me.

So you know who the haters are?

He says, "Celebrate those that hate you."

Tell somebody, "Celebrate those that hate you."

Stop rolling your eyes back. Stop fixing your mouth to cuss back.

And when they roll your eyes, put a smile on your face. When they say something negative, tell them, "I love you. God bless you. I'm praying for you."

Whatsoever he tells you to do, somebody shout whatsoever.

When I point to you, you say whatsoever.

Backbiting, stealing, committing adultery, homosexuality, lying.

You know it's some lying folks, don't you?

He said whatsoever.

Stop being jealous of other people.

Somebody else comes in with a new outfit on, and they weigh on the other side of the building, and you mad.

They ain't said nothing to you. They ain't done nothing to you. They took nothing from you.

They drove up in a new car.

I mean, do you know some people are so jealous that when somebody buys something new, they got a plan when they gonna wear it or drive it?

They have to fix their mind now, "When can I come out with this?" because I know folk gonna be popping their lips, rolling their eyes.

You do know that does happen, though.

He says whatsoever he tells you to do, called a perfect obedience.

Somebody shout perfect obedience!

But secondly, personal obedience. Shout personal obedience!

Now I want you to see the key word in the text. In verse 5, he says, "Whatsoever he said unto you."

"Whatsoever he says to you."

Now what's significant about that is in that same verse it says his mother said unto the servants, which is plural, but the command was to the individual, singular.

There were a group of servants, but individually everybody had to obey.

Obedience had to be personal.

Stop discussing what somebody else isn't doing and focus on what you and I should be doing.

Obedience is personal. I've got to obey for myself.

You need to obey because it's your blessing that's at stake. It's your healing that's at stake. It's your power. It's your anointing. It's your increase. It's your joy. It's your peace of mind that is at stake.

You have got to obey for yourself because all of the blessings of God that are for you are wrapped up in your own personal obedience.

If they didn't obey, they could not have had their water turned into wine.

And somebody today, your water hasn't been turned into wine because you are not following the prescribed formula found in the prescription bottle.

It's so that you might be blessed.

Now, they were caught with a hundred and sixty-two gallons of water.

Now, just as wine is synonymous for joy, water is synonymous for pain, for anguish, for hurt, for trouble, for death, all of these negative things.

Somebody today, you need your water turned into wine in many different areas, in many different ways, and you are surrounded by 162 gallons of water: pain, anguish, trouble, trials, trauma, tribulation.

In order for their water to be turned into joy, they had to obey.

We said, "Whatever I tell you to do, just do it."

Stop talking about what you're going to do. A lot of us made New Year's resolutions, and we're still talking about it.

Almost the money is almost over, and we ain't started yet.

Some folks I know have been talking about going on a diet since the last time and started all over at the beginning of the year.

Some folks have been saying, "I'm going to stop this mess. I'm going to cut this individual off. I'm gonna stop smoking. I'm gonna stop drinking. I'm gonna stop getting drunk. I'm gonna stop going out and staying out all times of night. I'm gonna leave this man's wife alone. I'm gonna leave this woman's husband alone. I'm gonna cut this young man off and kill this homosexual relationship. I'm gonna cut this woman off and kill this lesbian relationship."

Just been talking about it.

But let me encourage you to just do it.

Let me encourage you to stop saying you're gonna stop lying, stop saying, "I'm gonna stop backbiting," and just do it.

The Bible said in 1st Samuel chapter 15, verse 22, that obedience is better than sacrifice.

May I say to you that it's better to obey than to sacrifice the blessings of God?

It is true that what God has for you, it really is for you.

But I need to encourage you, somebody, that just like going to the cleaner, when you go to pick up your clothes from the cleaner, those clothes belong to you.

And those clothes were yours all the time.

Yeah, but in order to get your clothes, you've got to have some money.

I know, I know, I know that those clothes belong to you, but in order to get those clothes, you've got to lay some money down on the table.

And I stopped by to tell somebody that in order to get those blessings that already belong to you, you've got to lay down the currency of obedience to get your blessing.

Yeah, first chapter of Ephesians, chapter 3, verse 3 says, "The Lord has paid for all spiritual blessings."

They belong to you.

But if you're going to get those blessings that belong to you, you've got to turn over the currency of obedience.

Have I got a witness here?

Healing, it costs.

I know salvation is free, but power, it costs.

The anointing, it costs.

Peace of mind, it costs.

Strength, joy, material things, they cost.

But obedience will get you those blessings.

Obedience will take you to another level.

Obedience will get you blessed.

Shake somebody's hand and say, "Obedience will get you blessed."

Obedience will bring blessings your way.

Obedience will give you joy, will give you money.

Obedience will get you a relationship.

Obedience will get you a brand new job.

Obedience will get you the blessings of God.

No good thing will he withhold from him who walks aright.

Delight yourself.

Delight yourself.

Delight yourself in the Lord, and God will, I said, God will, God will give you the desires of your heart.

Shake somebody's hand and tell them, "I ain't sacrificing my blessing. It's better to obey."

And when you obey, God will, I said, God will, God will bless you.

You're already blessed, but God will bless you some more.

God will double your blessings.

God will.

Somebody shout, "God will."

Give somebody a high five and say, "Obedience pays off."

Obedience, it pays off.

It's worth it all to do what he says.

Obedience, it's worth it all. I said it's worth it all.

Any worthy, I said any worthy.

Grab somebody by the hand and tell them when you leave here, you've got to obey.

Obedience.

Grab somebody else's hand and tell them, "And when you leave here, you need to obey."

It's for your benefit.

It's for your healing.

It's for your deliverance.

It's for your power.

It's for your anointing.

It's for your joy.

It's for your relocation.

It's for your love.

It's for your blessings.
