### Summary
Today, we celebrated the incredible mission trip to Cambodia, where our team ministered to over 2,300 children across 12 churches, public schools, and even a correctional facility. This trip exemplifies our church's commitment to spreading the love of Jesus globally. As we look forward to future mission trips, possibly to Africa, I encourage everyone to consider participating.
We then shifted our focus to the increasing ungodliness in the world, as prophesied in the Bible. Despite the darkness, we are called to shine the light of Jesus even brighter. This should motivate us to share the love of Christ with those around us who are lost and deceived by the world.
Today's main topic was about sexual temptation and how to avoid it. We discussed the importance of radical purity, as God calls us to abstain from sexual immorality and to control our bodies in holiness and honor. We are being targeted for immorality, and it's crucial to be vigilant and sober-minded. Sex within marriage is a beautiful gift from God, but outside of marriage, it leads to destruction.
We examined the story of Joseph and Potiphar's wife from Genesis 39. Joseph's steadfastness in the face of persistent temptation serves as a powerful example. He recognized that sinning against Potiphar's wife would be a great wickedness and a sin against God. Joseph's story teaches us to flee from temptation and to maintain our integrity.
We also discussed the importance of guarding our minds, as the battle with sexual temptation is won or lost there. Our thoughts direct our actions, which define who we are. We must focus on things that are true, noble, right, and pure.
Finally, we acknowledged that some may have already fallen into sexual sin. The message is not to heap shame but to encourage repentance and a commitment to radical purity. God loves us and wants us to trust Him with every part of our lives, including our sexuality. For those struggling with same-sex attraction or gender confusion, the call is the same: trust God and surrender to His plan.
### Key Takeaways
1. **Shine the Light of Jesus**: As the world grows darker, our response should be to shine the light of Jesus even brighter. This means actively sharing the love and truth of Christ with those around us who are lost and deceived by the world. Our focus should be on being the light rather than being discouraged by the darkness. [42:10]
2. **Radical Purity**: God calls us to radical purity, which means abstaining from all forms of sexual immorality. This includes not even a hint of impurity in our lives. Radical purity is about honoring God with our bodies and living in a way that reflects His holiness. [45:22]
3. **Sex Within Marriage**: Sex is a beautiful gift from God meant to be enjoyed within the boundaries of marriage between a man and a woman. Outside of these boundaries, sex leads to destruction and heartache. Protecting the sanctity of marriage is crucial for a fulfilling and God-honoring life. [49:16]
4. **Guard Your Mind**: The battle with sexual temptation is won or lost in the mind. Our thoughts direct our actions, which define who we are. By focusing on things that are true, noble, right, and pure, we can guard our minds against the enemy's attacks and live in a way that honors God. [56:18]
5. **Repentance and Restoration**: For those who have fallen into sexual sin, the message is one of hope and restoration. God offers forgiveness and grace, and He calls us to repent and commit to radical purity. Trusting God with every part of our lives, including our sexuality, leads to true freedom and fulfillment. Day 1: Shine the Light of Jesus
As the world grows increasingly dark and ungodly, Christians are called to shine the light of Jesus even brighter. This means actively sharing the love and truth of Christ with those around us who are lost and deceived by the world. Instead of being discouraged by the darkness, we should focus on being the light that guides others to Jesus. Our actions, words, and attitudes should reflect the hope and love that Jesus offers, providing a beacon of light in a world that desperately needs it. [42:10]
Matthew 5:14-16 (ESV): "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."
Reflection: Think of one person in your life who is struggling with darkness or despair. How can you intentionally share the light of Jesus with them today through your words or actions?
Day 2: Radical Purity
God calls us to radical purity, which means abstaining from all forms of sexual immorality. This includes not even a hint of impurity in our lives. Radical purity is about honoring God with our bodies and living in a way that reflects His holiness. In a world that often promotes and normalizes sexual immorality, Christians are called to stand out by living lives of purity and integrity. This requires vigilance, self-control, and a deep commitment to God's standards. [45:22]
1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 (ESV): "For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God."
Reflection: What steps can you take to ensure that your thoughts, actions, and relationships align with God's call to radical purity? Identify one specific area where you can make a change today.
Day 3: Sex Within Marriage
Sex is a beautiful gift from God meant to be enjoyed within the boundaries of marriage between a man and a woman. Outside of these boundaries, sex leads to destruction and heartache. Protecting the sanctity of marriage is crucial for a fulfilling and God-honoring life. By upholding the biblical view of marriage, we honor God and experience the true joy and intimacy that He intended for us. [49:16]
Hebrews 13:4 (ESV): "Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous."
Reflection: If you are married, how can you invest in and protect the sanctity of your marriage today? If you are single, how can you honor God’s design for sex and marriage in your current relationships and future aspirations?
Day 4: Guard Your Mind
The battle with sexual temptation is won or lost in the mind. Our thoughts direct our actions, which define who we are. By focusing on things that are true, noble, right, and pure, we can guard our minds against the enemy's attacks and live in a way that honors God. It is essential to be mindful of what we allow into our minds through media, conversations, and our own thoughts. [56:18]
Philippians 4:8 (ESV): "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things."
Reflection: What are some sources of negative or impure thoughts in your life? How can you replace them with things that are true, noble, right, and pure starting today?
Day 5: Repentance and Restoration
For those who have fallen into sexual sin, the message is one of hope and restoration. God offers forgiveness and grace, and He calls us to repent and commit to radical purity. Trusting God with every part of our lives, including our sexuality, leads to true freedom and fulfillment. No matter how far one has fallen, God’s love and grace are always available to restore and renew. [01:18:59]
1 John 1:9 (ESV): "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
Reflection: Is there an area of sexual sin in your life that you need to confess and repent of? How can you take a step towards God’s forgiveness and restoration today?
I've known God since I was just a little kid, all my life, which is 16 years now.
The shot they didn't put in there was Dawson actually beaning a kid in the head, spreading the love of Jesus all over Cambodia.
So anyway, hey, what an awesome trip that the team had! They got to minister to actually about 2,300 children, and yeah, that's pretty awesome, at about 12 churches and then at some public schools. They would go into public schools, do ministry, and they even went to a correctional facility and did some work, as you saw.
So, an amazing trip, and I'm so thankful and proud of our team. So let's see. Any of them that are in here, let's thank them for their time and effort and investment in spreading the love of Jesus all over Cambodia. What a great opportunity! They represented us well, and I'm so glad that we are a church that does things like that. You can have a chance to participate too.
We will likely be taking another trip next summer. Probably not to Cambodia; it'll probably be to Africa. But you can join up and even just make a mental note now that, hey, I want to go the next time because I got to see how awesome that trip was.
So anyway, hey, before we get to our message, I want to just share something briefly about, you know, we talk often about just the condition of our world, you know? And that it just... Sometimes we get shocked by it, but really we shouldn't because the Bible tells us that in the last days, things are going to get more and more ungodly and darker and darker in this world, and non-Christian people are going to continue to act in ungodly ways.
But it still shocks us, especially as it gets more pronounced, as it gets more overt, as it gets more widespread, and is even willing to be demonstrated during something like the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. I don't know if you guys saw that, but, you know, there were some drag queens mocking Jesus in the Last Supper.
Some go, "Oh no, it was the Greek Dionysus and all that." No, it's not. I don't buy that for a second. It was mocking Jesus, and that's what the ungodly will begin to do more and more often.
And the reason is, is because, number one, we have the truth. And the Bible says that those in darkness hate the light. And we have the light. And we are the light.
But here's the thing. I don't want us to get too focused on what the world is doing that we are disgusted by or what the world's doing that we're offended by. I want us to focus on the fact that as the world continues to get darker and darker, it's important that we shine the light of Jesus more and more.
It should motivate us rather than frustrate or discourage us. It needs to motivate us that there are people all around us that need to know Jesus. There are people all around us that are getting sucked into these false beliefs. They're getting deceived by the things of the world.
And as people continue to make a mockery of Jesus, some people are going to go, "Yeah, why would I want to follow Jesus?" We've got to tell them why. We've got to show them why. We've got to be the light of the world that Jesus has called us to be and let them know that there's a God who loves them dearly. Amen?
We ready for that? Let's do that. Let's do that. Okay?
All right. Enough about that. I want to let you know right up front, so you have a warning. Any parents in here that have your kids with you, today's message is going to be rated PG-13. Okay? So you've been warned.
So if anybody wants to adjust to that, now would be the time because we're going to talk today about sex. And more specifically, how to avoid sexual temptation. How to know when to run. Because in the words of Kenny Rogers, you've got to know when to run.
And we're going to talk about that today. Know when to run. There are way too many people that are failing in their battle with sexual temptation.
Okay? The reality is there are likely married couples in our church that are struggling in this area. There are single adults, unmarried people, in our church, here in this room, online, that are thinking that, well, sex is going to solve their problems or enhance their life in some way.
But they're beginning to discover that the context for their sexual experience is going to change. They're beginning to realize that their sexual expression is empty, unsatisfying, and even damaging.
There are teenagers in our church who are playing with fire and are in danger of physical, emotional, and even spiritual scars that they are going to later regret. So we need to talk about sex.
So let's start by talking about some of what God's Word has to say about it. Because He actually... The Bible actually has a lot to say about sex. And I want to share a little bit about that, especially as it applies to what we're going to talk about today.
So here it is. Here's a few things.
Number one, God calls us to radical purity. God calls us to radical purity, regardless of your circumstances, your needs, your temperament. This is God's call for your life.
We talked about God's call last week, actually. This is part of God's call. God has called you to radical purity. Look at what it says in 1 Thessalonians 4, verse 3. It says, "For this is the will of God... This is the will of God. This is God's call to you. Your sanctification, that you abstain from sexual immorality, and that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God."
So, okay. I think a lot of us knew the Bible would say something like that, that we should avoid sexual immorality. You know, I get that.
But what do we mean by radical purity? What do I mean by radical purity? Well, listen to God's standard that He lays out in Ephesians chapter 5. He says this, "But among you there must not be even a hint, even a hint of sexual immorality or of any kind of impurity or of vile immorality. But you must not be a temptress of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people."
Not even a hint, even a hint is improper, even a hint is out of place. So yes, that would include porn. That's improper. It's out of place for God's holy people.
So number two, you are being targeted for immorality. You're being targeted for immorality.
1 Peter 5:8 warns us, and this is for all sin, but it also includes temptation to sexual sin. He says this: "Be sober-minded, like wake up, think properly here, you know, be awake, be watchful." He even says, "Be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, he prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour."
It is easy to see in our culture, which is very sexually saturated, that Satan is out to drag us down, to drag us down, to drag us into sexual sin, and he doesn't even hide it anymore. It is just out there; he's trying to drag us into sexual sin.
So we all gotta have our eyes open. We gotta be watchful to the fact that we're being targeted, especially as Christians. We're being targeted for immorality.
The enemy doesn't have to spend any time dragging non-Christians into sexual immorality; it's just rampant. That's just what they're naturally gonna do. But he is targeting us as Christians to drag us into that kind of temptation.
Okay? Number three, sex within marriage brings great good; sex outside of marriage brings destruction. That's what the Bible teaches. That's what the Bible says.
Solomon, he was the son of King David. His father, King David, was one of the most well-known adulterers in the Bible. We might even say he's the most well-known famous adulterer of all time, okay? Most of us know his story with Bathsheba.
Solomon, so his son, he grew up, he saw up close and personal the damage, the dysfunction, the destruction that comes from stepping outside God's boundaries with sex.
So Solomon sits down with his son and has a father-son talk with his son, and we see this in the book of Proverbs. He just lays it out for him, and this is what he says in Proverbs chapter 5, verse 15: "Drink water from your own cistern. Do we understand what he's saying there? Drink water from your own cistern, flowing water from your own well. Should your springs be scattered abroad, streams of water in the streets? Let them be for yourself alone and not for strangers with you. Let your fountain be blessed and rejoice in the wife of your youth, a lovely dear, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love."
Too often people hear or they think they're going to hear this message from the church: "Sex is bad; you shouldn't do it," right? People think that's the view of the church: "Sex is bad; don't do it."
But here's the truth: God is all for sex. God is pro-sex. It was His idea; He came up with it. He wants us to participate in it. Sex between a husband and wife is awesome, and it's worth waiting for, and it is worth protecting. It's worth protecting.
But sex outside of God's boundaries will ultimately destroy everything that's in our lives. God is pro-sex. God is pro-sex. God is pro-sex. God is pro-sex.
If it is important to you, it will destroy everything that's important to you. Proverbs 7 describes what you can ultimately expect from sexual immorality. Here's what it says: it pictures temptation as a prostitute, okay, who propositions a young man.
Now listen, I gotta clarify; actually, somebody even pointed this out after the last service. This isn't just about women coming after men. Sexual temptation is pictured as a woman prostitute, but this is just a metaphor, okay? So it works both ways here.
But listen to what it said. This is what happens when the young man takes the offer: "With much seductive speech, she persuades him; with her smooth talk, she compels him. All at once he follows her, as an ox goes to the slaughter, or as a stag is caught, till an arrow pierces its liver, as a bird rushes into a snare. He does not know that it will cost him his life."
Three word pictures he uses there to show us what will happen. First, he says it's like an ox being led away to be butchered. Next is a stag, a male deer, being caught in a trap and just waiting for the hunter's arrow to come and kill him. Then he compares it to a wild bird who used to know the freedom of flying and being free, but now is caught in a trap.
And what do these word pictures mean? What is he trying to say here? They mean that when we experience sex outside the boundaries that God has set up for us, you're actually being caught in a deadly destructive trap.
It's a trap. It looks like something that will please you, and maybe it does for a while, but it will ultimately bring destruction. What starts out as tasting like honey will turn into poison.
Think about this: when you light a fire in your fireplace, it's nice; it's good. It's a good thing; it brings warmth. You know, you like to sit around it, you warm up by it, you like to sit by it. It creates a nice warm glow in the house; it just creates good feelings. It can even be romantic.
I mean, a fire in a fireplace is a good thing. But when you're putting it on the floor of your living room, that good thing now becomes destructive and will likely burn your house down if it's not put out.
You get where I'm going? The right context is what God wants.
Now listen, we talk about the boundaries of marriage. I need to talk about this. Can we talk about the boundaries of marriage?
What we're talking about, we have to define marriage the way God defines marriage in the Bible. He created marriage. He defines marriage. And He created marriage to be between a husband and a wife, between one man and one woman.
And so that's the context that God wants us to enjoy sex: in marriage. And the way He defines marriage is between a man and a woman.
Anything, listen to me, anything outside of that then is sexual sin. Whether that be between a man and a woman who aren't married, a man and a man who aren't married, a woman and a woman who aren't married, multiple people, all of that is sexual sin if it's not within the context of marriage.
You with me?
Okay, number four, and I've been told this is not on your handout, but there is a number here. The battle with sexual temptation, the battle with sexual sin is won or lost in your mind. It's won or lost in your mind.
There's a reason why Paul tells us in Philippians chapter 4, verse 8, "Hey, you need to think about things that are true, that are noble, that are right, that are pure." He says, "Let your mind be on those things." Why? Because, man, just Satan wants to get our mind on all kinds of other things.
And if you look around in this world, there's all kinds of untrue, unknowable, unright, and unpure things that are going to come into our minds. And as Proverbs 23:7 puts it, "As a man thinks in his heart, so he is."
Your thoughts, get this, your thoughts are going to direct what you do. What you do defines who you are. You see why your thoughts are so important, and you see why the battle is won there.
Because what you allow to roll around in that mind of yours, what you allow to take root in that mind of yours is going to lead to your actions, and your actions define who you're going to be, who you are.
Several places in the Bible we are told that sin starts in your mind, it starts in your heart, and then it goes from there. Several places we're told that.
Now, some of you are going, "I thought we were talking about Joseph." We are. We are. We're going to get to that part of the story right now.
I want to take a look at how these truths play out for Joseph. Okay? The last time we saw Joseph last week, he had just been sold as a slave by his brothers, his immoral brothers, his jealous brothers, to a bunch of traveling Midianite, Ishmaelite merchants. They're heading down to Egypt.
They were going to kill Joseph. They threw him in a pit. They were going to kill him. They said, "Instead of killing him, why don't we just sell him to these merchants? Sell him as a slave. We'll get a little money. We don't have to feel quite as guilty that we killed him."
So that's what they do. They sell him as a slave, and they take him. They chain him up like an animal, and he's taken to Egypt.
When he gets to Egypt, he's put up on the slave auction to the highest bidder, and a man named Potiphar buys Joseph to work in his house. Potiphar is a high-ranking official in Pharaoh's court.
And as we begin to read in Genesis 39, in fact, you could turn there, Genesis 39, that's where we're going to be. As we begin to read there, we see that despite this horrible situation—obviously that's no good, right? I mean, he's hated so much by his brothers they want to kill him, but instead they sell him as a slave.
So he's sold as a slave. This is a terrible situation. But despite all that, despite this rough situation, the Lord continued to bless Joseph. Everything that he put his hands on prospered.
Verse 3 says that Potiphar noticed that Joseph's God caused Joseph to succeed. Everything he did, he would succeed. Potiphar noticed that. Like, man, this guy Joseph, everything he puts his hand on just blossoms. It just thrives.
Potiphar makes note of that. And I'm sure Joseph's saying, "Hey, you know, giving God the credit." And so Potiphar's like, "Man, this guy just, everything he touches turns to gold. Joseph, guess what? I want to put you in charge of my whole house. I want you to be over everything that I own. You're going to run my household."
And so Joseph—and guess what happened in Potiphar's house? It flourished. It just flourished. And, you know, it was amazing. He was in charge. He was an overseer of everything in his house, and his household prospered.
So things seem to be going pretty well for Joseph, right? I mean, you know, it's not a great situation. He's still a slave, but he's in a good position with a high-ranking official. He's in charge of things. He's probably living pretty good, but more trouble than he's headed his way as he faces a major temptation.
Let's read about it. We're going to start in verse 6. Genesis 39, verse 6.
So Potiphar left all that he had in Joseph's charge. And because of him, he had no concern about anything but the food he ate. So he didn't have to think about anything. His household is just flourishing.
Now, Joseph was handsome in form and appearance. So he was good-looking, and he was built, you know, he was a good-looking guy.
And after a time, his master's wife cast her eyes on Joseph and said, "Lie with me." But he refused. And he said to his master's wife, "Behold, because of me, my master has no concern about anything in the house, and he has put everything that he has in my charge. He's not greater in this house than I am. I'm as important to run this house as he is here. And he's made that possible for me."
He says, "Nor has he kept back anything from me except you, because you're his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?"
And as she spoke to Joseph day after day, he was going after her day after day. She was going after him day after day.
And he said, "I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. ### Quotes for Outreach
1. "I want us to focus on the fact that as the world continues to get darker and darker, it's important that we shine the light of Jesus more and more. It should motivate us rather than frustrate or discourage us, it needs to motivate us that there are people all around us that need to know Jesus. There are people all around us that are getting sucked into these false beliefs. They're getting deceived by the things of the world." [42:10] (25 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
2. "God calls us to radical purity, regardless of your circumstances, your needs, your temperament. This is God's call for your life. We talked about God's call last week, actually. This is part of God's call. God has called you to radical purity." [45:22] (19 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
3. "God is all for sex, sex, God is pro-sex, God is, is, it was his idea, he came up with it, he wants us to participate in it, sex between a husband and wife is awesome, and it's worth waiting for, and it is worth protecting, it's worth protecting, but sex outside of God's boundaries will ultimately destroy everything that's important to you, it will destroy everything that's important to you." [51:07] (36 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
4. "Your thoughts are going to direct what you do. What you do defines who you are. You see why your thoughts are so important and you see why the battle is won there. Because what you allow to roll around in that mind of yours, what you allow to take root in that mind of yours is going to lead to your actions and your actions define who you're going to be, who you are." [56:18] (24 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
5. "For those of you here who you've already been outside God's boundaries, okay? The point of today is not to heap shame on you, okay? Hopefully, it's to help you see, okay, I need to repent of that and I need to never return to that. From this day forward, I'm going to live with radical purity. I'm going to guard my heart and my mind. I'm not going to be lured by the same thing again." [01:18:59] (32 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
### Quotes for Members
1. "The reality is there are likely married couples in our church. That... That are struggling in this area. There are single adults, unmarried people, in our church, here in this room, online, that are thinking that, well, sex is going to solve their problems or enhance their life in some way. But they're beginning to discover that the context for their sexual experience is going to change. They're beginning to realize that their sexual expression is empty, unsatisfying, and even damaging." [43:37] (40 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
2. "We have to maximize the consequences and minimize the benefits. We tend to do the opposite. Even if the benefit list is this long, and the consequence list is this long, we like to maximize the benefits. We focus on those. We, you know, inflate those like, oh, this will be so great, and oh, those aren't. That's not, there might be a really long list, but those aren't that big a deal. We like to minimize the consequences, but instead, we have to maximize the consequences and minimize the benefits." [01:14:04] (33 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
3. "Joseph called it right. Joseph saw it right. He said in verse 9, he said, if I do what Potiphar's wife wanted, it would be a great wickedness, not just a sin against the man who has been so good to me and has trusted me so much, but he said, more importantly, this will be a sin against God. It's not just about you. It's not even just about you and your wife or your husband. This is also about you and God." [01:14:04] (36 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
4. "Randy Alcorn, he's a famous Christian author, and he has hanging in his office, he has a, what he, this is what he calls, it's a personalized list of the anticipated consequences of immorality, okay? A personalized list of the anticipated consequences of immorality. I'm gonna, I'm gonna give you the, the, the non-personalized, like his, his wife's name, and his kids' names aren't in here, but he put them in his, and he has it hanging on his wall, as just a constant reminder. These would be the consequences if I decided to step into sexual immorality." [01:15:47] (41 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
5. "We talked last week about getting off course. When it comes to God's call in our life, this is one thing that gets so many people off course. It is a strong temptation for so many people. And Satan has used it so strategically and unassumingly that we get caught up in it and it gets us off course maybe easier than anything else. Is it really worth it? Joseph didn't think so. You got to know when to run. You got to know when to run." [01:18:59] (34 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
