Day 5: The Urgency of Salvation
The opportunity to accept Jesus and secure our place in heaven is limited to our earthly lives. Once we pass, the chance to make this decision is gone. This urgency should motivate us to share the gospel and ensure our own salvation is secure. It is a sobering reminder that our time on earth is finite and that the decisions we make now have eternal consequences.

Recognizing the urgency of salvation should inspire us to live with a sense of mission and purpose. It calls us to be proactive in sharing our faith and to make the most of every opportunity to lead others to Jesus. This urgency also reminds us to examine our own hearts and ensure that we are living in a right relationship with God. [01:03:20]

2 Corinthians 6:2 (ESV): "For he says, 'In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you.' Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation."

Reflection: What steps can you take today to share the urgency of salvation with someone who has not yet accepted Jesus?

There is one name that is above every name, and that's the name of Jesus. He's worthy of all the praise. That one name is, and it is that image in the raven's. There are not thousands of thousands, or any more, who don't try, or any piece of people to which a single holy human will be rewarded.

There is such a pillar of great grace, its ike, trusting in the righteous life, whole tools of grace, whose stay in the word of peace, and has appeared. Would you put your hand on them right now, just on their shoulder or on their arm, and pray for them? Those of you that are watching online, just lift your hand right where you are, and we're going to pray for you.

Lord, we pray for the needs that are in the house right now. We pray for healing. We pray for financial needs. We pray for breakthrough. Lord, you know the needs that are here today, and we pray for those that are online. Lord, that person may feel like they're all alone, nobody cares. They can't even get out and go to church, and this is their church. And so, Lord, we pray for them today. We ask you to send the word.

Pray, Lord, we pray today in your name, in your name, in your name. Also, this week we've got some missionaries going out. We have some workers going to camp and some kids that are going to camp, and Kristin's going to be going on a mission team. He read 140 books on heaven, and almost everybody that even talks or reads or something about heaven always refers to him. So you can get it on Amazon, or we have a few copies out in our bookstore. At least you can pick it up and hold it.

And for those of you that are parents or grandkids, we have Randy Alcorn's book, "Heaven for Kids." And it's how do you describe death to kids? How do you describe heaven? How do you describe how we'll spend eternity? And it's really, really a good book.

And then a new one that just came out, "The Real Heaven: What the Bible Actually Says" by Chip Ingram. And that book also, we have a few copies. All right. Well, our scripture passage that we've been looking at... Yeah, I don't need these. Thanks. But don't give them away because I need them next service. All right. So our scripture verse in this series is, "It's appointed for men to die, and after this, judgment."

I heard a story about a Sunday school teacher teaching first graders, and he asked them, he said, "I want to know what you have to do to get into heaven." So if I sell my house, sell my car, have a garage sale, and give all that money to the church, will that get me to heaven? And the kids yelled, "No, no." He said, "Okay, if I mow the church lawn, if I clean the church, if I make everything look neat, will that get me to heaven?" "No, no, that won't get you to heaven."

So he said, "Okay, if I'm kind to animals and I give candy to kids, will that get me to heaven?" "No, no." And so he said, "Well, then what will get me to heaven? How will I get there?" And one little kid in the back says, "You got to die."

I love it. Last week, we went to hell. This week, let's go to heaven. How about that? Anybody want to get excited about going to heaven? I want to paint a picture in the next few weeks about what the new heaven and the new earth is. You see, you are not designed to spend an eternity in heaven. The heaven that we talk about now is an intermediate heaven.

And so we're going to look at that today. We're going to look at other scriptures. So I think it'll bring some clarity to us, but I'd love for you to help me with this. I just feel like when we talk about where we're going to spend eternity, we need to honor God's word. We don't do this often, but I'm going to ask you to stand in honor of God's word as I read two passages about where we as believers are going to spend eternity.

And the first one is in John chapter 14, verses one through six. So let's look. "Don't let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God. Trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father's home. If this were not so, I would have told you. I'm going to prepare a what? A place for you. When everything is ready, I will come and get you so that you will always be with me where I am. And you know the way to where I'm going."

"No, we don't know the way," Thomas said. "We have no idea where you're going or how to get in the way." Jesus said, "I am," read it with me, "the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

Now, Revelation 21, this is John the Revelator getting a vision into heaven. "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared, and the sea also was gone. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne that said, 'Look, God's home is now among his people. He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them, and he'll wipe away every tear from their eyes. There should be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying, nor pain. All these things are gone forever.' And the one sitting on the throne said, 'Look, I'm making everything new.' And then verse seven, 'All who are victorious will inherit all these blessings. And I will be their God, and they will be my people.'"

Father, we come to you right now, and we thank you that you're preparing a place for us. Not just a place for us to imagine, but a real place, a real city on a real earth to spend eternity with you as you will be here with us. We don't go up to you, but you come down to us, and you live on this new planet earth.

So we pray today, Lord, that you help our understanding. Help me to say what you want me to say. Don't let me say anything I shouldn't say. And at the end of today, we pray that you will be glorified, the saints will be edified, and the enemy will be... We'll give somebody a high five and say, "I plan to see you in heaven."

You say, "Well, why are we spending all this time talking about after this, how it's talking about death?" Because in your notes, and we said it last week, what you believe determines how you feel. What you believe determines how you feel.

You may not have been here, so let me give you just a little rewind. This rope here, this part of this rope represents eternity past. We can't see the end of it. It goes all the way out the door. It goes all the way around. It goes back to the very beginning, which never was a beginning. God always has been, and there was chaos and there was darkness. So God came, and then he began, he created man, created this earth.

So what you see here in the red is that there's like Adam and Eve, you know, there's the sin, and come along here. They would be over here. It'd be, you know, World War I, World War II, all the conflicts in the Middle East and all that. And when you come over here to this little blue, actually be much smaller than this, but this little blue place, that's where we live right now.

And so what we believe, what we believe about eternity ahead of us, that it never ends, just like eternity past never ends. But what I believe about this determines how I live. Now, if I believe that I just live any old way I want, when I die, you know, the worms just come and eat me up, that that's it, you know, in there. But we looked last week in the last couple of weeks that it doesn't end like that.

So I want to talk today about what is heaven going to be like, what's it going to look like? What can I expect? Let me ask you, how many of you here have ever heard a teaching on heaven? Okay, about half. So half of us in our adult life have never heard a teaching on heaven, but yet we're told that we need to go there. Yet we're told that it beats the alternative, but what is it all about?

And so for the next few weeks, I want to try to paint a picture that, number one, if you're taking notes, it's just simply that you need to regard heaven as a real place, as a real place. It's tangible. It's real. It's not just a dream. It's not just a dream. Somewhere 532 times in the Bible, it talks about heaven. And Jesus said, "I'm going to prepare a what? Place for you." It's home sweet home.

You know, people have that sign up, "Home sweet home, Alabama." I'll give Chris that one, okay, because I know he's thinking about that one, but heaven, this new heaven, this new earth is my eternal home. Look at Philippians chapter three, verse 20. "But as for us, the home where we belong is in heaven."

So we're waiting for the Lord Jesus to come from there. He is the one who will come from heaven and save us. He will change these weak bodies that we have now on the earth. He will make them become strong and beautiful like his own body that he has in heaven.

But before I tell you what heaven is like, I need to tell you what heaven is not like. So I want to talk about some misconceptions that people have about heaven. And I think some of these are actually humorous.

Number one, the first one is heaven is a place filled with harps and wings and clouds that when you die, you immediately go to heaven. They hand you a robe. You put the robe on, they hand you a harp, and they put wings on you, and you float around in the clouds. And you just play the harp for the rest of your life. Now, how many feel like that's really exciting?

I think Gary Larson in his Far Side comic sort of caught this. The guy floating around the cloud, "I wish I'd brought a magazine."

What are some of the misconceptions about heaven? That heaven is an ever-ending church service. Some people believe that, you know, we're just going to be singing forever and ever and ever. Look, when the Bible talks about we're going to worship forever, we're going to sing forever, it doesn't mean in a constant song. It just means by our life.

I mean, some of you, it seems like an eternity for 15 or 20 minutes of standing here during our Sunday worship. First of all, you need to get over it. It doesn't matter that you don't worship, you don't sing. You go to a concert, and you're going to move around, you're going to gyrate, and you're going to sing some words you may know only a few. You need to get over it because during that time, we're singing songs about the God that we love, the Jesus that died for us, and we're honoring him.

So you need to get over yourself, and you need to lift your hands every once in a while and get involved. But second of all, heaven is not going to be a perpetual song service. That's a misconception.

Another misconception is that no one dies and goes immediately to heaven. You got to go to the gate check where Peter is. You've heard those stories. After you die, you're going to go to heaven. You're going to go to heaven. You're going to go to heaven. You're going to go to heaven. And Peter will be standing at the gate and he will walk you in.

I heard a story. A cat died and went to heaven, which is irregular to me anyway. And so Peter saw the cat and said, "You know, you've had a really tough life. What can I do for you in heaven?" And the cat said, "You know, I've had to sleep on hard floors. I've had to sleep in ugly beds. If I could just have a big fluffy pillow, it would be heaven to me."

So Peter said, "Done, go on in, and there's your pillow." And then, well, not long after that, some mice came. And so they came up to the gate, and Peter said, "You know, you've had a rough life. What can I do for you?" And they said, "You know what? All of our life, we've been chased by women with a broom. We've been chased by cats. You know, if we could just have skates, we could just really go quick."

Peter said, "No problem. There's skates." So Peter went around for, you know, a few billion years. And finally, he came back to check on the cat and said, "How are you doing?" And the cat yawned, "Oh, Peter, I just love this comfy pillow. It's just so awesome, but I also got to say thank you for the meals on wheels."

We're talking about misconceptions. Another misconception is that heaven will be boring. How can heaven be boring? Are you bored on this earth? The heaven, the new heaven, the new earth that we're going to spend eternity is like this earth only on steroids. This earth, as it's created to be perfect, the Bible says, it's not going to be boring.

And here's another misconception. Boom! Soon as I get to heaven, all of my questions will instantly be answered, and I will be like God, and I'll know all the answers. Like I'll just pepper God with a few why questions. Like why did you make mosquitoes? Why is the avocado pit so big? Or why do I lose socks in the dryer and can never find them?
