Biblical Responses to Stress: Trust, Thankfulness, and Peace

Summary

### Summary

Welcome, everyone. Today, we delve into the topic of stress and how we, as believers, should respond to it biblically. Stress is a universal experience, and it can come from various sources—financial, relational, physical, emotional, or even inner turmoil. The first thing we need to understand is that stress is a part of life, but our response to it can be different because of our faith in Christ.

We began by discussing the importance of having a relationship with Jesus. If you are not assured of your relationship with God, now is the time to get it right. Come forward, ask for prayer, and seek to be filled with His Spirit. This is the foundation upon which we can build our lives and handle stress effectively.

Next, we explored the biblical response to stress. Philippians 4:4 tells us to rejoice in the Lord always. This is not always easy, especially when we receive bad news. However, 1 Thessalonians instructs us to give thanks in all circumstances. This is God's will for us. When we face unexpected challenges, our first response should be to thank God, even if we don't understand the situation. This act of thanksgiving aligns us with God's will and brings peace to our hearts.

We also discussed the power that resides within us. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead dwells in us. This is a profound truth that we often underestimate. Jesus tells us not to worry about anything because worrying cannot change our circumstances. Instead, we should cast all our anxieties on Him because He cares for us.

In Matthew 6:34, Jesus advises us not to worry about tomorrow because each day has enough trouble of its own. Our imagination often takes us to the worst-case scenarios, but we need to trust that God is in control. He is with us in every situation, whether it's a desert, a flood, or a fire. God is our protector and will see us through every trial.

We then moved on to practical steps for dealing with stress. Philippians 4:6-7 instructs us to present our requests to God through prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving. When we do this, the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. This peace is a gift that allows us to face our challenges without being overwhelmed by them.

We also need to be mindful of our thoughts. Proverbs 23:7 says, "As a man thinks in his heart, so is he." Our thoughts shape our reality. Therefore, we should focus on what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable. This positive thinking will help us navigate through stressful situations more effectively.

Contentment is another key aspect. Paul, in Philippians 4:11-12, talks about being content in every situation, whether in need or in plenty. This contentment comes from trusting God and knowing that He will meet all our needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

Finally, we concluded with a call to action. Trust God for all things. He will give us the strength to face any challenge. Whether you are a single mother, facing financial difficulties, or dealing with inner turmoil, God is with you. He will meet all your needs. Stand firm in this promise and give God the praise He deserves.

Devotional

Day 1: Rejoice and Give Thanks in All Circumstances
Stress is an inevitable part of life, but as believers, our response to it can be different because of our faith in Christ. When faced with unexpected challenges, our first response should be to thank God. This act of thanksgiving aligns us with God's will and brings peace to our hearts. It may not be easy, but it is a powerful way to shift our focus from the problem to the Provider. Philippians 4:4 tells us to rejoice in the Lord always, and 1 Thessalonians instructs us to give thanks in all circumstances. This is God's will for us. When we face unexpected challenges, our first response should be to thank God, even if we don't understand the situation. This act of thanksgiving aligns us with God's will and brings peace to our hearts. [57:57]

Psalm 34:1-3 (ESV): "I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together!"

Reflection: Think of a recent challenge you faced. How can you shift your focus from the problem to thanking God for His presence and provision in that situation?

Day 2: Trust in the Power Within You
The same power that raised Jesus from the dead dwells in us. This is a profound truth that we often underestimate. Jesus tells us not to worry about anything because worrying cannot change our circumstances. Instead, we should cast all our anxieties on Him because He cares for us. Understanding and trusting in this power can transform our approach to stress. When we recognize that the Holy Spirit resides within us, we can face our challenges with a sense of peace and confidence, knowing that we are not alone. [01:02:59]

Ephesians 1:19-20 (ESV): "And what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places."

Reflection: Reflect on a current worry or anxiety. How can you cast this anxiety on Jesus today, trusting in the power of the Holy Spirit within you?

Day 3: Do Not Worry About Tomorrow
Jesus advises us not to worry about tomorrow because each day has enough trouble of its own. Our imagination often takes us to the worst-case scenarios, but we need to trust that God is in control. He is with us in every situation, whether it's a desert, a flood, or a fire. By focusing on the present and trusting God for the future, we can alleviate much of the stress that comes from worrying about what might happen. This trust in God's sovereignty allows us to live more fully in the present, knowing that He holds our future. [01:04:07]

Matthew 6:34 (ESV): "Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble."

Reflection: Identify one area of your life where you are worried about the future. How can you practice trusting God with this concern today?

Day 4: Present Your Requests to God
Philippians 4:6-7 instructs us to present our requests to God through prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving. When we do this, the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. This peace is a gift that allows us to face our challenges without being overwhelmed by them. By bringing our concerns to God in prayer, we acknowledge our dependence on Him and open ourselves to His peace and guidance. This practice of prayer and thanksgiving can transform our approach to stress, helping us to remain calm and centered in the midst of difficulties. [01:14:52]

Colossians 4:2 (ESV): "Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving."

Reflection: What is one specific request you need to bring to God today? How can you incorporate thanksgiving into your prayer for this request?

Day 5: Be Content in Every Situation
Paul talks about being content in every situation, whether in need or in plenty. This contentment comes from trusting God and knowing that He will meet all our needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus. Trusting God for all things, and He will give you the strength to face any challenge. Whether you are a single mother, facing financial difficulties, or dealing with inner turmoil, God is with you. He will meet all your needs. Stand firm in this promise and give God the praise He deserves. [01:21:02]

1 Timothy 6:6-8 (ESV): "But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content."

Reflection: Reflect on an area of your life where you struggle with contentment. How can you practice trusting God to meet your needs in this area today?

### Quotes for Members

1. "When we talk about responding and dealing with stress, how should I biblically deal with the stress that comes in all of our lives? When we're looking at this, I want you to go to Philippians 4 and 4. Philippians 4 and 4. The first thing we're going to do when we get the bad news. Sometimes bad news come out the blue. I wasn't even expecting that, Lord. I had known it in my mailbox. And went around it seven times. I declared and decreed a check. And a bill came. Some people at that church done told me wrong. We didn't. The first thing we do according to Philippians is we should rejoice in the Lord. Always. And again, I say what? First Thessalonians tells us this. It is the will of God. In Christ Jesus. That we give him thanksgiving in everything. Like that's God's known will. You get something unexpected. First thing you do. You may not rejoice. Let's be real and human in here. You're not going to rejoice first when you get no bad news. It all depends on the severity of the news. I'm not going to really rejoice if I was expecting something good to come my way and I got bad news. That's not going to really be my response. We going to work on that together. But I'm not going to really rejoice if I was expecting something good to come my way and I got bad news. But the one thing I am going to do is according to God's will. I know that's the known will of God. He said give him thanks in all things. That's in first Thessalonians. Give what? Thanks in what? Now righteous people. This is for you. This is instructions for us. We get the bad news. The first thing I want you to do after you've had your human response. Because you are human. You get up. And you say thank you God. Thank you. I don't understand it but. Thank you. I know I'm carrying out the known will of God. In this circumstance. One thing that stresses believers and people out is the thing called uncertainty. How is it going to turn out? Can I help us all out today? Charles Stanley. The beloved pastor in Atlanta. Who has gone on to be with the Lord. He has a saying. Obey God. 2. "Because I think we underestimate. What we really have in Christ. You know Pastor David. Said something up here. When God's spirit was moving amongst us. This morning. He said the same power. That raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Dwells. In your mortal body. That's hard to digest isn't it. Some of y'all are looking at me like. Say that again. Biblically. In context. The same power. That raised Jesus. From the dead. Dwells. In every last person. Who belongs to him. And we underestimate the power. That we're working with. And that's where growth comes in. He told us. Don't worry. Worry about nothing. He said because who of you. By the way of worry. Can change anything in your life. Worrying. Stressed out. Hair thinning. Stomach upset. Eye twitching. All because of stress. Biting your nails. Anxiety. Can't sleep. Insomnia. All of these are responses to our body. To stress. When we've carried it way too wrong. And probably way too long. Matthew 6 and 34 says. I want us to read that. Therefore. Do not worry about what? Don't worry about what's ahead. Because why? Tomorrow will what? Tomorrow got its own problems. Some of you all have used your imagination. Because the mind goes there. Let your children not come home. By the time they said they was coming home. You done put those children in the grave. In your imagination. How many? Be honest. You waiting on the police. To call you any moment. Little Bobo went to jail. Why? Because your imagination took you what? How come our imagination think the worst. Before we think the best. Help us with that. Oh God. Because some of you feel like." [01:02:24](Download raw clip | Download cropped clip | Download vertical captioned clip)

3. "Don't kind of trust God. I also want to say this. Watch how you move. Model. Biblical truths. Before your family. And your children. If they see you respond to stress. In a crazy manner. With anxiety. With you biting your nails. Cussing everybody out. They're going to respond like that. They're going to respond like that. When they get an affliction. We want to be careful that we respond. In a biblical manner. I'm not saying that you won't hurt. You won't cry. You won't feel frustrated. But be mindful as a believer. Model. How you are supposed to handle. Your stressful days. Especially before your family. And your children. Philippians 4 says in everything. By prayer. And what? Supplication. Now on the screen it says petition. Let me tell you the difference. Between prayer. And supplication. Prayer is our father. This is an example of prayer. Our father which art in heaven. Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. You know the Lord's prayer. That is a what? Type of prayer. But a supplication. Is your personal. Specific request. Unto God. Heal my husband. Billy. Save my daughter. Shanika. It ain't in the book. Salvation is in the book. But that is your personal prayer. Request to God. That's called supplication. So once we made our prayer. And what? Specific request to God. He said I want you to top it off like this. With thanksgiving. Tell him thank you. And release that to him. The spirit of peace comes. And it garrisons your mind. Where your stress out at. And your heart. There was a time in my life. Me and my husband. When we first got married. We was having some real bad financial problems."
