The Journey of Discipleship: Walk by the Spirit | October 19, 2025

Devotional

Day 1: Walking by the Spirit Means Listening and Obeying God’s Voice

To walk by the Spirit is not just to hear God’s word, but to actively obey it. The Spirit leads believers through an inner voice that always aligns with the Word of God, never contradicting it. True spiritual living is marked by both attentive listening and faithful action, not mere passive hearing. When God prompts you—whether to avoid something harmful or to help someone in need—responding in obedience is what sets apart a life led by the Spirit. [31:14]

Acts 16:6-10 (ESV)
And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. So, passing by Mysia, they went down to Troas. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

Reflection: What is one area where you sense God’s prompting but have hesitated to act? What step of obedience can you take today to follow the Spirit’s leading?

Day 2: The Spirit’s Voice Always Aligns with God’s Word

The Holy Spirit never leads contrary to Scripture; His voice is always consistent with the Bible. If an inner prompting tells you to do something that goes against God’s Word, it is not from the Spirit. Instead, the Spirit encourages actions that reflect God’s character—honesty, diligence, love, and service. Discernment comes from knowing Scripture well, so you can recognize the Spirit’s true guidance and reject voices that lead you away from God’s will. [32:16]

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (ESV)
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Reflection: Is there a decision you’re facing where you’re unsure if it’s God’s leading? Compare it to Scripture today—does it align with God’s Word, or is it contrary?

Day 3: Walking by the Spirit Brings Freedom from the Flesh

To walk by the Spirit is to experience freedom from the desires of the flesh and the burden of legalism. The Spirit empowers believers to resist sinful inclinations and to live in the grace and love of Christ, not out of fear or obligation to the law. This freedom is not a license to do as we please, but a call to live by faith, letting Christ’s life and love be evident in us. [42:26]

Galatians 5:16-18 (ESV)
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

Reflection: What is one fleshly desire or habit you struggle with? Ask the Holy Spirit to help you walk in freedom from it today.

Day 4: Dying to Self and Living by Faith in Christ

The Christian life is about dying to one’s own desires and letting Christ live through you. This means surrendering your will and ambitions, allowing God’s purposes to take first place. When you live by faith in the Son of God, your actions are motivated by love and gratitude for what Christ has done, not by fear or mere duty. The Spirit enables this transformation, making you more like Jesus each day. [45:06]

Galatians 2:20 (ESV)
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Reflection: What is one personal ambition or desire you need to surrender to Christ? How can you let Him lead you in that area today?

Day 5: The Spirit’s Guidance Leads to God’s Mission and Blessing

God gives each believer a vision or dream that is not just for personal gain, but for the blessing of others and the advancement of His kingdom. When you walk by the Spirit, you become sensitive to God’s calling—whether it’s to serve, to share the gospel, or to help those in need. Embracing God’s vision for your life brings true fulfillment and aligns you with His greater purpose. [35:21]

Jeremiah 29:11 (ESV)
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Reflection: What is one way you sense God calling you to serve others or advance His kingdom? How can you take a step toward that vision this week?

Sermon Summary

Bible Reading

Acts 16:6-10 (ESV) — > And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia.

Galatians 5:16-18, 22-25 (ESV) — > But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. ... But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.

Galatians 2:20 (ESV) — > I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
