Understanding the Purpose of Old Testament Laws

Welcome! I'm glad to see everyone, and my heart is filled with joy to be able to come together and worship with all of you.

We're going to grab our Bibles and look at Psalm 22. This Psalm is written by David, but it prophesies Jesus. We see that Jesus will be mocked, His hands and feet will be pierced, but in the middle of Psalm 22, it stops and says, "Yet You Are Holy, enthroned on the Praises of God." Our fathers trusted in God, and He delivered them. They cried out and were rescued, and they trusted in Him and were not put to shame. In the middle of Jesus' suffering, He cries out, "Holy, Holy, Holy."

So, in the next few songs, some of them will be more energetic, and some will be more laid back, but I don't want us to step away from whatever we're bringing in from the week and whatever we're seeing in the world around us. Let's come to God in His throne room and let that put everything in perspective.

We're going to sing a song called "There Is No One Like You." I'm going to teach you the chorus, and Gabrielle will be helping you. The chorus goes, "There is no one like You, there has never ever been anyone like You. You've never ever done once more, there is no one like You, there has never ever been anyone like You." The song goes on to say that You are the same, You never change, and everything else around me could be eternally. No one here has ever made it so good to be so good to me. We have been, for the last many weeks, going through the book of Exodus, and in this teaching series, we are taking a survey of the books of Exodus through Deuteronomy. So far, we have been following this narrative of the life of Moses, and we have gone through some of the really pretty familiar events in his life, such as his birth, his confrontation with Pharaoh, the Parting of the Red Sea, Mount Sinai, and the golden calf.

We are going to continue to go through that narrative. However, within that narrative, God also gives the law and speaks the law into these events. God gives commands and detailed instruction on how to live. Starting today, we are going to not only continue to go through that narrative and trace that storyline of how Moses leads the people across the desert out of slavery and to the promised land, but we are also going to take a look at the law itself and have a little bit more of a theological treatment of the law.

We are going to do that this morning, at least in an introduction. We are not going to complete that survey of the nature of the law, but we are going to start it today and then sprinkle some messages about that throughout the next few months.

For the kids, we have the elementary age kids in the service over the summer. Usually, they're in their classes during the school year, but during the summer, we have them here, and usually, we ask a question sometime during the sermon about the sermon, and the kids have an opportunity to answer that question and win a prize.

This morning, it's going to be a little more complicated. We are going to test you and make you pay attention throughout the whole sermon. I am going to have a bunch of slides, and on three of those slides, there will be a green star in the corner, and on those slides, there will be a word underlined. I want you to look for that green star, and then when you see it, write down the word that's underlined. At the end of the sermon, I'm going to ask you what those three words were, and if you can tell me what those three words were, then you can win a prize.

God gave detailed instructions on how to live, how to order worship, and how to even order society in different ways. We should pay attention to these commands and respond in obedience. To test us, let's look at a few laws from the Mosaic law.

Leviticus 11:10-11 states that anything in the seas or rivers without fins and scales is detestable and should not be eaten. Leviticus 19:19 commands us to not let our cattle breed with a different kind, not to sow our field with two kinds of seed, and not to wear a garment of cloth made of two kinds of material.

These laws raise questions about how much we should use the Mosaic law to order society and justice, and how we should respond to a skeptical, unbelieving world who challenges us with these laws. The three words to describe something about the word of God and the Bible are obedience, justice, and wisdom.

We have an old Covenant and a New Covenant. The old Covenant was given to Moses when God brought the Israelites out of Egypt. The New Covenant was ushered in by Jesus on the night He was betrayed. He took the cup after they had eaten and said that it was the New Covenant in His blood.

The question is how do these covenants relate? How much alignment and agreement is there between the old and the new? To answer this, we can look to Deuteronomy 30:11-14, which says that the Commandment is not too hard for us, nor is it far away. It is not in heaven or beyond the sea, but is very near us, in our mouth and in our heart. This means that we can understand and obey the law.

The law is part of a covenant that God has made with His people, and He predicted that there would be a new covenant. This was fulfilled by Jesus. We can try to tackle this by understanding that the law is accessible and that we can obey it.

There is much debate among theologians about the continuity between the Old Testament of the old Covenant and the New Covenant. Greg Banson, a 20th-century theologian, represents the continuity side of the spectrum. He believes that men have no right to alter or spurn Old Testament laws on their own say-so, social traditions, or preconceived ideas about what is morally appropriate or inappropriate in the Mosaic law. He goes further to say that Christians ought to work to persuade others of their obligation to follow the Old Testament laws.

On the other side of the spectrum, there are those who believe that there is little to no continuity between the Old and New Covenants. Jonathan Edwards, an 18th-century theologian, said that there is perhaps no part of divinity attended with so much intricacy and where orthodox divines do so much differ as stating the precise agreement and differences between the two dispensations of Moses and Christ.

To illustrate this debate, one can look at the Porsche 911. The original version in 1964 and the modern-day version have a lot of continuity between them. However, if one looks at the Honda Civic, the original and modern versions have few similarities and may not be picked out of a lineup as the same car.

Ultimately, the question of how much continuity there is between the Old and New Covenants is a difficult one. It is up to each individual to decide where they fall on the spectrum between continuity and discontinuity.

If you follow what he is proposing, he is saying let's take even the punishments or consequences proposed in the Mosaic law and let's enforce them in our society. Many of those punishments are capital punishments for a variety of different crimes. A modern popular pastor of a mega church, Andy Stanley, has a different view. He says there is a problem with today's church, which is our incessant habit of reaching back into the old Covenant concepts, teaching, sayings, and narratives. He challenges the church with the question of whether we should unhitch our teaching of what it means to follow Jesus from all things old Covenant.

Traditionally, people have parsed out the old Covenant and tried to find their place on this spectrum. There is a way to categorize the laws within the old Covenant and divide them into moral laws, ceremonial laws, and civil laws. Moral laws include not murdering and not stealing, ceremonial laws dictate how to worship, and civil laws how to structure a just functioning society. This categorization was codified in the Westminster Confession of Faith in the 17th century. It states that the ceremonial laws are now abrogated under the New Testament, and the sundry judicial laws, or civil laws, have expired.

We have three categories of law: ceremonial, civil, and moral. Jesus fulfilled the ceremonial and civil laws through His ministry, so we are still obligated to follow the moral laws because they are part of God's unchanging moral nature. However, the Bible does not explicitly define these categories, and it can be difficult to decide which bucket a law should go in.

Greg Bansa argues for a twofold division between moral and ceremonial laws and suggests that civil laws are a way of expressing God's morality. The New Testament in Galatians and Hebrews suggests that the old Covenant has been abrogated. However, I would argue that the moral law still applies to us today, and that I am in the camp of continuity with some discontinuity.

All scripture is breathed out by God and is profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness. God's Word is complete and equipped for every good work. All Scripture is profitable, including everything written in the Old Testament, whether it's about shellfish or mixed materials in garments.

So how do we fit this together? We can divide these laws into different categories. Some laws are explicitly renewed in the New Testament, such as First John 5:21, which says, "Little children, keep yourselves from idols." Nine out of the Ten Commandments are also explicitly renewed in the New Testament.

There are also laws that are explicitly negated in the New Testament, such as the food laws. Jesus declared all foods clean, so shrimp cocktail and bacon are allowed. Even when laws are not explicitly negated, they are not carried out in the New Testament Church. For example, in First Corinthians 5, Paul addresses a man who committed gross sexual sin. He then says in verse 11, "But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who..."

The law of the whole garment mystery states that you shall not wear a garment that is made of two different fabrics. This is a law that is not addressed one way or the other in the New Testament, so we are not obligated to directly obey this law. However, there is a principle behind this law, and that principle is that we should not be conformed to the world.

So we can take that principle and apply it to our own lives and say, "Okay, how can I not be conformed to the world in my dress and my appearance?"

There is a penalty for those who commit certain sins in the church, such as sexual immorality, greed, idolatry, drunkenness, and swindling. In the Old Covenant, these were capital offenses, and the guilty party would have been stoned. However, Paul does not encourage the church to carry out this punishment.

There are other laws in the Old Covenant that are not addressed in the New Testament. We are not obligated to obey these laws, but we can understand the purpose behind them and extract the timeless principles of God that influence the specific purpose. We can then apply these principles to our own lives.

For example, the law of the whole garment mystery states that one should not wear a garment made of two different fabrics. We are not obligated to obey this law, but the principle behind it is that we should not be conformed to the world. We can take this principle and apply it to our own lives by considering how we can dress and appear in a way that does not conform to the world.

The Old Testament law has many purposes, one of which is to set apart a distinct people. Leviticus 20:26 says, "You shall be holy to me, for I the Lord am holy and have separated you from the people."

Another purpose of the Old Testament law is to protect people. Deuteronomy 22:8 says, "When you build a new house, you shall make a parapet for your roof, that you may not bring the guilt of blood upon your house if anyone should fall from it." This command was given to protect people from falling off of flat roofs. We can apply the principle behind this command, even though we are not required to obey it directly.

The overall purpose of the Old Testament law is love, as Jesus and Paul both said. There are many sub-purposes of the law, such as to teach us wisdom, to provide justice, to reveal God's character, and to provide guidance for living. We can learn from these purposes and apply them to our lives, even though we are not obligated to obey the Old Testament law directly.

God is removing a people and making them distinct and special in some way. Through our modern sensitivities, we can stumble over this because anything that feels exclusive or elitist can be seen as negative. We should understand the cultures that God was pulling them out from.

At the time of Moses's birth, the Egyptians killed all the baby Hebrew boys in order to control the population of the people they had enslaved. The Canaanite cultures were also known for their brutality, violence, and child sacrifice. God's original intention when He initiated the formation of this people with Abraham was to make them a great nation and to bless them so that they could be a blessing to all the families of the Earth.

This helps us understand some of the laws that we read that at first glance are confusing. For example, the law about not wearing a garment of cloth made of two kinds of material. This was likely because they were among people who worshiped fertility gods and placated them by taking two unlike things and blending them together. The tattoo and shellfish commands were probably an attempt to make this people distinct from the people around them.

When we understand this purpose, we can apply it to our lives, and it can be profitable. God is making us, as the Christian Church, a distinct people. We should be different and offer a contrast to the world in lots of different ways.

When I became a Christian in college, I initially thought the Christians were weird, but I kept hanging around with them, and eventually, I thought, "These guys are weird, but I want it." It was compelling, and I took the step to align myself with them. God is creating a distinct people in order to draw people out of the world and set them on a different path.

Leviticus 10 says we are to distinguish between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean. This was very important for them to understand that God was holy and that they were removed from that holiness due to their sin. God was creating a system to communicate His holiness and that their sin was a big problem and needed to be atoned for.

In the modern Church, we can sometimes not connect with God's holiness. We try to communicate that God is very accessible, and we want people to come in and understand that they can approach God. We play music that is accessible and dress casually to communicate that God can be approached. At the same time, we want to make sure that we retain experiences of God where we understand He is holy and transcends.

We can take the instructions in the old Covenant and consider them to see how they can help us understand God's holiness. God has applied a variety of laws to our life in order to help us hold on to a sense of reverence and awe in Him. One of these laws is to preserve physical health.

We may not see the importance of this right away, but if the people had obeyed all of these rules, it most likely would have protected them from a lot of disease and harm. This is especially remarkable when you compare it to some of the medical knowledge of the day.

For example, around 1550 BC, a remedy for hair growth in a bald man was to anoint the head with a mixture of the fat of a lion, hippo, crocodile, cat, snake, and ibex. Another remedy for a headache was to boil the skull of a catfish and anoint the head with it for four days. For swelling of one's limbs, one was to boil plants from the field and tadpoles from the water ditch in oil and anoint the limbs with them.

The Mosaic law was wildly different, with all these cleansing and washings, and when you touched a dead person, you had to wash in a certain way. We can understand that God was preserving them and protecting them from things that were going to hurt them in different ways.

As we read the goodness of God in these boundaries that He gave them, we can delight in it and love the law. Psalm 119:46-48 speaks of the law in this way: “I will also speak of your testimonies before kings and shall not be put to shame, for I find my delight in your commandments which I love.”

Let us not be discouraged, but that we would be encouraged and that we would be delighted in it and that we would be able to see the beauty of it and the goodness of it and the love of it, and that we would be able to apply it to our lives and to our families and to our churches and to our communities and to our world.

And Lord, I pray that You would help us to understand it and to apply it and to be obedient to it and to be faithful to it and to be able to share it with others and to be able to teach it to others and to be able to live it out in our lives and to be able to be a light to the world and to be able to be a witness to the world and to be able to be a testimony to the world of Your goodness and Your love and Your grace and Your mercy and Your faithfulness and Your truth and Your justice and Your righteousness and Your holiness and Your power and Your glory and Your majesty and Your sovereignty and Your faithfulness and Your love and Your grace and Your mercy and Your justice and Your righteousness and Your holiness and Your power and Your glory and Your majesty and Your sovereignty and Your faithfulness and Your love and Your grace and Your mercy and Your justice and Your righteousness and Your holiness and Your power and Your glory and Your majesty and Your sovereignty and Your
