Finding True Contentment in God Alone

Good morning, church! My name is Mike, and I am the teaching pastor here at Monterey Church. I am very excited to be with you this morning as we dive right back into God's word and our sermon series called the Jesus Story. We're reading through the entirety of the Bible together, and I'm trying to preach in tandem with that as much as possible. We're just diving in, and we're seeing where we can see Jesus on every word, every page, and every story. As I've been saying this entire series, every story whispers the name of Jesus. Every story in the Old Testament and the New, He is the beginning and the end, the Alpha and the Omega.

Let's pray, and then we'll just jump right into God's word.

Jesus, we love you so much. We praise you and thank you. You're so good to us, Lord. As we settle into your word here, help us to hear you more clearly than ever before, help us to see you in more definition than ever before, help us to know you, and help us to learn from you. Holy Spirit, would you give us just a supernatural capacity to respond to you in faith? It's in Jesus' name we pray.

We are now in the second week of the Book of Proverbs. This is a collection of about 900 or so different precepts and principles that were written by King Solomon and inspired by God through His Spirit. King Solomon was the wisest man apart from Jesus who ever lived. The purpose of the Proverbs is to teach Godly wisdom.

Alright, it's time for the message. Let's prepare our hearts to encounter and respond to God's word together.

Solomon confronts something that we all struggle with: discontentment. Not the Godly discontentment of wanting more of His kingdom, but a self-centered discontentment of wanting what others possess. He gives us insight and instruction in Proverbs 23:4: "Don't wear yourself out trying to get rich. Be wise enough to know when to quit. In the blink of an eye, wealth disappears, for it will sprout wings and fly away like an eagle." He wants us to learn how to navigate through the chaos and murkiness of life, how to succeed, how to be prosperous, how to live with purpose, meaning, and fulfillment in every situation and every trial. He wants us to build strong character, to know the difference between good and evil, right and wrong, and what's just and what's fair.

Today, I think if we go back, we can see it's pretty obvious that humanity has an innate desire for material wealth or money. Most of us can relate to this, wanting to be rich and having the desire for some sort of abundance in other areas of life. In Proverbs 22:23-24, Solomon is highlighting this tension and craving for something we don't possess. He recognizes that we will work hard and spend what we need to attain these things.

We can look back at scripture and see how Adam and Eve ate from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, wanting to gain knowledge and wisdom. Later on, a generation after Noah built the Tower of Babel in order to gain influence and power. In the wilderness, the Israelites worshiped the golden calf because they were discontent. In our day in 2021, we are some of the busiest people in human history, the divorce rate is high, and the world is full of broke millionaires who want all this money.

People are often discontent with life and what it has given them, which is why pornography is one of the world's biggest industries and why more and more people are leaving the church. Solomon recognizes this discontentment and challenges us to practice contentment instead. He says to be wise enough to know when to quit and to be satisfied in what we have, free from the love of money, power, position, and dependency on others or material possessions.

He gives two primary reasons for why we should find contentment in God alone. The first is that the wealth we desire is fleeting, as it will sprout wings and fly away like an eagle. Jesus also speaks to our discontentment, telling us not to store up treasures on Earth and not to chase after money, fame, sex, or relationships. He reminds us that life is not defined by what we have, even when we have a lot. He tells the story of a rich farmer who was discontent.

Solomon and Jesus both remind us that the treasure we look to in order to satisfy the desires of our flesh is meaningless, foolish, and a waste. Anything that is apart from God will fail us and disappoint us. Life itself is fragile and finite, and relationships, people, markets, and houses will all come and go. The looks, sex, and appeal are all momentary.

This leads us to the second reason why we should find contentment in God and God alone: because God alone truly satisfies. Psalm 107:8 says, "Let them praise the Lord for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them, for he alone satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things." Psalm 16:11 says, "You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever."

We often wrestle with discontentment and feelings of being unsatisfied because we have taken our eyes off of the real treasure and forgotten our first love. We have allowed our circumstances to dictate what satisfies us and dictate our contentment. God offers us living water, promises us rest and comfort, and dispenses His goodness and grace into our life. He knows our every need and provides for it. He promises His presence and freedom, and He promises that He will never fail or abandon us.

We see the pinnacle of God's love and promise in His one and only Son, Jesus Christ. Where sin and rebellion abound in our lives, His grace abounds all the more. In Christ Jesus, our sins have been separated from God, and the gift of God, the loving, unconditional gift of God, is His one and only Son, Jesus, who came to pay the ultimate price on our behalf. We could not do the work; we could not pay the price in order to receive from Heaven and be reconciled to the Father. Only Christ, only Jesus, the perfect Son of Man and the perfect Son of God.

In John 6:35, Jesus says, "I am the bread of life," meaning He is here to satisfy our souls. Whoever comes to Him will never be hungry again, and whoever believes in Him will never be thirsty. He also quotes from Isaiah, saying He has come to bring the good news, the gospel, to the poor in spirit, to release the captives, to give sight to the blind, to set the oppressed free, and to usher in the Year of Jubilee, the time of the Lord's favor for His people.

Jesus is our treasure, our hope, and our peace, and we can find true and everlasting contentment no matter what our situation or circumstance as we fix our eyes on Christ and our faith on Him. The Apostle Paul gives us the best example of this in his letter to the Philippians. Paul was a prisoner for the sake of the gospel and his ministry, exposed to pain, suffering, hunger, isolation, and even the threat of death. Yet, in the midst of this tension, he wrote in Philippians 4:11, "I have learned how to be content with whatever I have."

Could we say the same? We can look at our lives, our relationships, our circumstances, and the things we have, and learn to be content with whatever we have. We can learn to live on almost nothing or with everything.

We just want to thank you for the gift of Jesus that you've given us, that you've given us the gift of grace, and that you've given us the gift of faith, and that you've given us the gift of contentment.

So, Lord, I pray that you would help us to turn our attention away from the things that we don't have and to focus on the things that we do have and to focus on you, Lord Jesus, our treasure and our provider and our sustainer and our hope and our joy and our peace and our contentment.

So, Lord, I pray that you would help us to surrender our hearts to you and to surrender our lives to you and to surrender our circumstances to you and to follow you and to trust you and to believe in you and to have faith in you and to be content in you and to be satisfied in you and to be strengthened in you and to be emboldened in you and to be made righteous in you and to be reconciled in you and to be brought into the Father's house in you and to be made new in you and to be set free in you and to be forgiven in you and to be saved in you and to be satisfied in you and to be content in you and to be strengthened in you and to be emboldened in you and to be made righteous in you and to be reconciled in you and to be brought into the Father's house in you and to be made new in you and to be set free in you and to be forgiven in you and to be saved in you and to be satisfied in you and to be content in you and to be strengthened in you and to be emboldened in you and to be made righteous in you and to be reconciled in you and to be brought into the Father's house in you and to be made new in you and to be set free in you and to be forgiven in you and to be saved in you and to be satisfied in you and to be content in you and to be strengthened in you and to be emboldened in you and to be made righteous in you and to be reconciled in you and to be brought into the Father's house in you and to be made new in you and to be set free in you and to be forgiven in you and to be saved in you and to be satisfied in you and to be content in you and to be strengthened in you and to be emboldened in you and to be made righteous in you and to be reconciled in you and to be brought into the Father's house in you and to be made new in you and to be set free in you and to be forgiven in you and to be saved in you and to be satisfied in you and to be content in you and to be strengthened in you and to be emboldened in you and to be made righteous in you and to be reconciled in you and to be brought into the Father's house in you and to be made new in you and to be set free in you and to be forgiven in you and to be saved in you and to be satisfied in you and
