Jesus says that the house built to last belongs to the person who hears His words and obeys them. The rock is not a storm free life. The rock is a life made storm proof because it is built on what Jesus says. Rain will fall, floods will rise, and winds will beat against every house, because life is just lifing. But a house built on solid rock will not collapse.
The image of Saint Peter’s church in Manhattan makes the point plain. The building looked fine for seventy three years, until a skyscraper came close and exposed the cracks. The cracks showed up in the walls, but the real problem was under the building. The whole thing had been built on sand. A life, a home, a marriage, and a family can look alright until something big gets close enough to expose what the foundation has always been.
Jesus puts the difference between the wise house and the foolish house right at the ears. Both people hear Him. Both houses face the same storm. Both receive the same rain, flood, and wind. The difference is that one person follows what Jesus says, while the other one hears it and does nothing with it. Hearing the Word without obeying the Word leaves a person with a head full of sense but a heart full of sins.
The flood of words coming from television, social media, gossip, drama, and foolishness makes intentional listening necessary. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. God’s Word has to get into the mind deeply enough to rewire the whole person. The Word reveals deficiencies, errors, and faults, but it also reveals that believers are more than conquerors, have authority in Christ, and do not have to remain trapped in brokenness.
The storms also call for a post storm assessment. Some storms are not only attacks from the devil. Disobedience, poor habits, bad communication, and neglected responsibilities can give trouble room to move. A medical storm may call for changed eating. A relational storm may call for learning how to communicate and then actually applying it.
The building remains a building because it must keep being worked on to stay up. Marriage, family, finances, communication, and personal character never stop needing work. A house built to last starts with a person willing to let God work on them first.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Storm proof beats storm free Jesus never promises a house that rain cannot touch. The rain, flood, and wind still come against the wise person’s house. The promise is that a life built on Christ can take a hit without coming apart. [11:35]
- 2. Hearing must become obedience Both builders heard the same words from Jesus, yet only one house stood. Knowledge can stay in the head while sin keeps ruling the heart. Obedience is where the Word becomes foundation instead of religious information. [19:47]
- 3. Guard what enters the ears A life receives a nonstop stream of words, opinions, drama, and noise. The appetite for foolishness can weaken faith before a storm ever shows up. The Word of God must be heard intentionally because it builds what all those other words try to tear down. [16:27]
- 4. Assess the storm after it passes Some storms reveal a place where disobedience, neglect, or poor habits opened the door. A post storm assessment is not condemnation, but an honest look at what needs to change. God’s wisdom gives people a way to minimize damage instead of repeating the same cycle. [27:35]
- 5. Keep building what matters most A building needs ongoing attention because staying up requires continued work. Marriage, family, finances, communication, and character cannot live on yesterday’s effort. Before a person can effectively work on the home, God must be allowed to work on that person. [37:46]
