Money, Idolatry, and Repentance: Zacchaeus and the Young Ruler

Jesus places two wealthy men side by side, and the contrast is not an accident. Matthew shows the rich young ruler coming with a dangerous question: “What good thing must I do to get eternal life?” Jesus first presses him on goodness itself, because only God is good, and then Jesus turns him toward the commandments. The young man thinks the boxes are checked. He has not murdered, stolen, committed adultery, or lied, and he has honored father and mother. Then Jesus “drops the hammer” by going after the first commandment without naming it outright: sell the possessions, give to the poor, and come follow him.

The rich young ruler walks away sad because Jesus has put his finger on the nerve. His idol is not just money as coins in a pile, like Smaug sitting on gold. His idol is the power, status, privilege, comfort, and control that money gives. The young man wants righteousness that validates him, but Jesus exposes a heart that is not as perfect as it thinks it is. His wealth has also insulated him from the burdens of ordinary people, the people he is supposed to help lead. Selling and giving to the poor would not only relieve their hardship, it would make him identify with them and depend on God like they do.

Luke then shows Zacchaeus, another wealthy man, but one whose sin is out in the open. Zacchaeus is a chief tax collector, a turncoat, and everybody knows he is a scumbag. Zacchaeus knows it too. His nice bed and cool stuff cannot wash clean the fact that he has extorted his own people. Yet Zacchaeus sees in Jesus a chance for redemption. Jesus calls him down from the tree and goes to his house, and the result is not vengeance but salvation.

Zacchaeus does what the rich young ruler refuses to do. Grace and forgiveness open his heart, and he gives half his possessions to the poor and pays back four times what he cheated. Jesus redeems the wicked, corrupt cheater and gets the money back, plus some. The point is not finally money. The point is dependence upon God. Jesus provides, whether through a job, health, resources, or daily bread, and the question is whether a person trusts him enough to lay the whole pile before him. The world promotes the rich young ruler. Jesus calls sinners to become more like Zacchaeus.
