YOUNG GUNS | Part 1

Mary’s perfume fills the room with fragrance, but not everyone understands what she is doing. Judas sees waste, but Jesus sees beauty. Mary is not trying to impress anyone or earn approval. Mary gives Jesus the best thing she has because she recognizes who he is and deeply loves him.

Devotion looks like love expressed through priority. Devotion does not give Jesus what is convenient or what is left over. Devotion gives him the best because he means the most. Devotion is not perfection either. Devotion keeps choosing Jesus again and again, in good times and hard times, when he feels close and when he does not.

Christianity is not about earning God’s love. Devotion is a response to the love already shown on the cross. Jesus gave everything first, so the heart is invited to answer with “Jesus, you first.” Success, sports, social media, relationships, and self can make the heart happy for a while, but none of those things were ever meant to carry the weight of the heart. Jesus alone knows everything, the good and the bad, and still loves completely.

The encounter with Jesus turns borrowed faith into personal faith. Mary poured out the perfume because she had encountered Jesus, not because someone told her to. Devotion becomes response, not obligation, when Jesus becomes more than someone else’s Savior.

Character is shaped by the stories a person lives through, for better or for worse. Joseph’s life shows that betrayal, slavery, false accusation, prison, and power did not weaken his character when his trust stayed in God. Genesis shows Joseph forgiving the very brothers who harmed him, because peace, joy, and forgiveness had been formed in him by God.

Christlike character grows through the word, community, and prayer. The Bible brings the heart in line with God. Community helps faith grow with others. Prayer gives problems to God because he is not there to deny them, but to take them.

Faith is more than believing. The chair proves the point: belief becomes real when someone sits down. The Good Samaritan shows faith in action through compassion, kindness, generosity, forgiveness, and love. Jesus says, “Go and do likewise,” calling faith to be visible in the way people serve, forgive, listen, and love this week.

Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. So they gave a dinner for him there.
