Bible Reading
John 3:1-21 “Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?” Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
[54:13]Numbers 21:4-9 “From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way. And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.” Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you. Pray to the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.” So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.”
[01:04:37]Ezekiel 36:25-27 “I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.”

- What details does John give about Nicodemus’s identity, and what details describe the time and manner in which he comes to Jesus? [57:24]
- In John 3, what does Jesus say is necessary for a person to see or enter the kingdom of God?
- What contrasts does Jesus make between flesh and Spirit, and what picture does He use to describe the Spirit’s work? [01:00:11]
- In Numbers 21, what happened to the Israelites, what provision did God give, and what did the people need to do to live? [01:06:01]
Interpretation questions
- Why would Jesus tell a respected Pharisee and teacher like Nicodemus that he must be born again? What does this reveal about the limits of religious background, moral effort, and outward respectability? [59:09]
- How does Ezekiel’s promise of cleansing, a new heart, and God’s Spirit help explain what Jesus means by being born of water and the Spirit? [01:01:25]
- Jesus connects the bronze serpent lifted up by Moses with the Son of Man being lifted up. In what ways does this comparison show both the seriousness of sin and God’s provision for salvation? [01:06:24]
- John 3 says that people love darkness because they do not want their works exposed. Why can someone who trusts Christ come into the light without living in fear of condemnation? [01:10:19]
Application questions
- Nicodemus had knowledge, status, and religious experience, yet he still needed new birth. What are some good things people may quietly rely on instead of relying fully on Christ—family background, church attendance, morality, ministry, or knowledge? Which of these is most tempting for you? [01:03:03]
- Faith in Christ is more than agreeing that Jesus is real; it means entrusting oneself to Him. Where might you be treating faith more like admiring a parachute than putting it on and trusting it with your life? [01:07:55]
- Is there an area of sin, pain, doubt, or failure that you are tempted to keep hidden in darkness? What could it look like this week to bring that area into Christ’s light through honest confession, repentance, or asking another believer for help? [01:11:22]
- For those in Christ, conviction calls them back to repentance, while condemnation tells them they are beyond grace. When you sin or fail, which voice do you tend to listen to most? How can the truth of no condemnation shape your next response? [01:10:25]
- Christ’s people carry His light into dark places. What is one specific “dark place” in your neighborhood, workplace, family, or city where you can prayerfully and lovingly bring the hope of Christ this week? [01:12:19]
- New birth produces a changed life, not merely a changed label. Where do you see evidence of the Spirit giving new desires, new freedom, or new direction in your life? Where are you asking Him to continue His renewing work? [01:13:51]
