God’s faithfulness becomes clear when anxiety and stress are handed over to Him instead of carried alone. The struggle to trust God can show up in something as ordinary as public speaking, where old habits say, “I have to control this,” while God keeps showing that He is already there, already knows, and has already prepared the way. Trust muscles grow when fear is met with the simple choice to breathe and remember that God will take care of it.
Paul’s words in Philippians 3:13-14 call believers to forget what is behind, strain toward what is ahead, and press on toward the goal in Christ Jesus. Paul does not picture a casual, comfortable life. Paul pictures somebody pushing forward with everything they have because the prize is worth it. The American dream can look appealing, but a life spent collecting shells, playing softball, and arriving before God with nothing but temporary stuff would be tragic. Christ calls His people not to waste their lives.
Paul’s desire to know Christ includes knowing the power of His resurrection and participating in His sufferings. Paul had every reason to pursue the Jewish version of worldly success, yet Jesus took hold of his life and redirected everything. Paul’s life became much harder after following Christ: prison, beatings, shipwrecks, hunger, danger, and sleepless nights. Christ was still worth it because present sufferings cannot compare with the glory God will reveal.
Christ alone saves because no person can become good enough to rescue himself. Paul’s cry, “What a wretched man I am,” names the human problem: people repeatedly do the very things they hate and cannot fix their own sinful hearts. Jesus lived the perfect life sinners could not live, died the death sinners deserved, and rose again so spiritually dead people could be made alive. Jesus did not merely come to make bad people good. Jesus came to make dead people live.
The parachute image exposes why believers must put on Christ. A person who follows Jesus merely to improve life will throw faith aside when life becomes uncomfortable. A person who knows judgment is real and salvation is found only in Christ will cling tighter to Him through turbulence. God’s wisdom also surpasses human plans, like the delayed Mexico border crossing that turned out to be the very thing needed to receive the FastPass. God knows better, even when surrender feels hard.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Press on toward Christ, not comfort. [30:11] Paul’s language is active: straining, pressing, pursuing. Christ does not call believers to coast through life looking for the easiest path. The hard road of obedience may cost something now, but wasted years spent avoiding God’s call cost far more. [30:11]
- 2. Jesus makes dead people live. [40:58] Sin is not merely a collection of bad choices needing a little cleanup. Sin leaves people spiritually dead and unable to save themselves, no matter how religious or disciplined they appear. Christ gives life because He has done what sinners could never do for themselves. [40:58]
- 3. Put on Christ for salvation. [43:49] The parachute is not meant to make the flight more comfortable. Christ is not a religious accessory for making plans work out better. Faith clings to Jesus because there is no other name by which sinners can be saved. [43:49]
- 4. God knows better than human plans. [49:55] Control feels safe until God shows how little people actually see. The delayed line at the border looked like a problem, but it positioned the group to receive the FastPass before the concrete barrier made it impossible. Submission begins when believers stop demanding their preferred route and trust God’s full view.
