Sermon Summary

Revelation 4 and 5 opens a door in heaven and lets John see things as they really are. John is on Patmos, exiled, lonely, and living in a world where the church is persecuted and run down. God invites him through an open door, in the Spirit, and the first thing John sees is a throne. The throne says God rules. The One seated on it says no power, no principality, no amount of time, and no trouble on earth will ever move God from His rightful place.

The rainbow around the throne shows that every promise God ever made still stands. The white garments on the elders show that God really does wash sin whiter than snow. The crowns on their heads show that God takes wretched, stained people and seats them before Him in honor. The thunder, lightning, and rumblings show the power and holiness of God. The crystal sea shows purity so clean that sin cannot live there. The four living creatures and the twenty-four elders show all creation and all the redeemed gathered around God, saying what heaven never gets tired of saying: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come.”

Revelation 5 then shows what looks like a crisis. The One on the throne holds a sealed scroll, God’s plan and proclamation, but no one is found worthy to open it.
