From Worship to Witness: Renewing Our Minds

The call to renewing the mind sits inside the larger movement from worship to witness. Christ's gospel works inward first, and then that inward work shows up outwardly in what a person does, says, and how a person treats people. That outward evidence becomes the witness, so claiming Christ as king means reflecting him in a way that is actually true to who he is.

Preservation and change stand in tension all the way through. Some things are worth preserving because they belong to identity, values, truth, and calling. But preservation without adaptation eventually becomes extinction. The Maginot Line shows what happens when yesterday's strategy gets preserved after the enemy has changed, and the daycare story shows that mission can stay the same while everything blocking the mission has to change.

Romans 12 begins where renewal always begins: worship. Paul does not start with behavior. Paul starts with “offer your bodies as a living sacrifice,” because worship is not just twenty minutes of singing on Sunday morning. Worship is placing the whole life on God's altar, usually one piece at a time, while God keeps asking for the next piece.

Conformity and transformation are not the same thing. Conformity passively lets the world squeeze a person into its mold. Transformation is God's ongoing work of making a person new. God is not asking for self-improvement as much as surrender to his remaking work.

God preserves his character, holiness, truth, gospel, kingdom, mission, love, and promises. God changes thinking, assumptions, priorities, fears, habits, and maturity. Moses shows the danger of relying on yesterday's obedience when God gives today's instruction. The water still came from the rock, and God's mission still moved forward, but Moses missed out.

Renewed humility comes next. Paul says not to think more highly of self than is proper, because renewal changes how a person sees the body of Christ. The gifts are not self-expression. Prophecy speaks God's truth into the present, service notices needs before recognition, teaching helps people connect Scripture to life, encouragement comes alongside weary people, giving treats resources as stewardship, leadership takes responsibility for people, and mercy enters another person's pain.

Renewed minds stop consuming church and start contributing to the church. Renewed love then becomes the natural fruit: sincere love, honor, hospitality, patience, prayer, blessing enemies, peace, and overcoming evil with good. Daily surrender keeps a person from sliding back into old fear, control, and habit. The witness becomes unmistakable when the unchanging gospel is preserved while the living Christ is followed into whatever he is doing next.
