Worship begins with the truth that people were designed to give their full heart, focus, and attention to their Creator. The human heart will always worship something, but every substitute leaves people empty because only the God of the universe is worthy of that kind of devotion. Worship includes gathering, singing, opening the Word, private devotion, and the active offering of life to God.

Orthodoxy means right belief joined to praise. The deepest worship grows out of the truest theology because people cannot worship God deeply while remaining unclear about who He is. Right belief keeps worship from becoming empty, shallow, or pulled toward something that is not Christian practice at all.

The real thing must become familiar before a counterfeit can be recognized. A bank teller does not need to study every false bill because close familiarity with genuine money makes the fake obvious. Christian faith works the same way. The essentials must become clear enough that distorted versions of Christianity do not quietly take their place.

The essentials are a remarkably small list, even though Christians often treat every disagreement as if it were a test of faithfulness. Calvinism and Arminianism, or different views of the end times, can create unnecessary friction because Bible believing, Jesus following people can disagree on those issues and still have fellowship. The essential questions are clearer: who God is, who Jesus is, what sin has done to humanity, how salvation works, what the Spirit does, and what Scripture is.

Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 15 preserve the early creed at the center of Christianity: Christ died for sins, was buried, was raised on the third day, and was seen. Those facts were passed on because they are not side issues. They are the foundation on which Christian worship stands.

Jude adds that clear belief must become defended belief.
