Worship With Reverence and Joy! (2 Samuel 6)

Second Samuel 6 sets worship before God in two ways that have to stay together, reverence and joy. The opening picture of a championship celebration shows that when something big happens, people do not respond with “polite little golf claps,” but celebration can also go sideways when joy loses order and restraint. Worship before the Lord is not just having a good time, and it is not just standing scared at a distance. Worship before the Lord stands in awe of a holy God and rejoices in the goodness of a gracious God.

The ark of the covenant carries the weight of God’s holy presence among his people. The ark was not just a gold box with angels on top, but the place tied to the Ten Commandments, the manna, Aaron’s staff, and the presence of the Lord. Uzzah’s death shows that God’s holiness is not casual, adjustable, or safe in the hands of sinners.

God’s judgment reveals the deeper problem, because the priests had already ignored God’s word by putting the ark on a cart instead of carrying it as commanded. Uzzah “thought the dirt was dirtier than his hand,” but God teaches that sinful hands are far dirtier than dirt. The ark does not need protection from the ground as much as sinners need mercy before a holy God.
