Day 1: When Worship Feels Like an "American Horror Movie"

Worship can feel foreign, even absurd, to outsiders. Raised hands and emotional singing appear strange until one shifts from observer to participant. The discomfort reveals a deeper truth: authentic worship isn’t about rituals but responding to the worth of Jesus. What once seemed like chaotic fanaticism becomes a natural outpouring when focused on the King who split history. True worship reorients not just actions but perspective. [00:17]

“These people honor me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me.” (Matthew 15:8-9, ESV)

Day 2: Shipping Worth to the Right Address

The word “worship” means “worth-ship”—transporting value to what deserves it. Everyone worships, whether careers, reputations, or self-image. But finite things crumble under the weight of our devotion. Like a brother’s sudden anger over a joked-about idol, our reactions betray misplaced worship. Jesus alone withstands the freight of our full allegiance, dividing His glory with no rivals. To worship Him is to redirect life’s cargo to its true destination. [01:59]

Unlike the host who offered hollow hospitality, her posture proved worship is less about propriety than the unforced response of a heart stunned by grace. Like Augustine’s “hallelujah from head to foot,” worship permeates ordinary moments when the sacred collides with the daily. Like a sports fan cheering before the win, we praise the King who already secured the victory. This isn’t denial but defiance—declaring God’s worth when life whispers lies. Worship begins as something that can look weird from the outside. Grown adults lifting hands, crying, and singing to someone unseen can look strange until the observer becomes a participant. Worship stops being about the act and becomes about the One being responded to.

The word worship means worth ship, the giving or conveying of value. Worship is not something only religious people do. The human heart worships whatever it treats as sacred, whether that is a political figure, an ideology, a career, a lifestyle, a family wound, or the self. The problem with worshiping the self is that the self makes a terrible god when mortality, crisis, pain, and darkness come crashing into the present.

Jesus divides his glory with nothing and no one. Christ is not a lucky charm for hard times or a feel good hit during a bad spell. Christ is Lord of all, or not Lord at all. Worship therefore becomes the logical, rational, natural response to the supreme, supernatural, sovereign Creator of the universe.

God is so infinite in beauty, goodness, majesty, and worth that worship can never be exhausted. The human soul is wired to decenter itself and magnify something greater than finite existence. For the Christ follower, worship is not merely singing songs or attending services, but an all encompassing life of loving, honoring, and obeying God with the entire being.

Worship is first about a person. Jesus warns that lips can honor God while hearts remain far away, and that kind of worship is vain. God sees past the acts, the culture, the correct words, and the learned religious motions. True worship comes from the heart, treasures God above earthly things, and overflows into praise and love.

Worship is also about posture, and the primary posture is perpetual gratitude. The sinful woman in Luke 7 shows this with tears and hair at Jesus’ feet. Her many sins had been forgiven, so great love poured out of her. Forgiven little loves little, but forgiven much loves much.

Worship then becomes a profession. Jesus says true worshipers worship the Father in spirit and in truth. Spirit names the supernatural reality of God breaking in, while truth names the credibility of a life that matches the praise. Worship finally becomes praise, sometimes as sacrifice, because God remains worthy whether feelings are high or low. The Hebrew words for praise show kneeling, shouting, singing, lifting hands, surrendering, and making music, because the body should be allowed to express what the heart knows about Jesus.
