Worship is not just music, but offering your whole life to God as a living and holy sacrifice.
Romans 12:1 (NIV)
"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship."
Reflection: What is one area of your daily life where you can intentionally offer yourself to God as a living sacrifice today, putting His will above your own desires?
[28:28]
God commands us to sing together with thankful hearts, making music as a community to honor Him.
Colossians 3:16 (NIV)
"Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts."
Reflection: As you sing or listen to worship music today, how can you let gratitude fill your heart and turn your focus to God’s goodness?
[34:41]
Singing together not only praises God but also prepares our hearts to receive His message and move in our lives.
Ephesians 5:18b-20 (NIV)
"Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ."
Reflection: Before you hear God’s Word or pray today, try singing or meditating on a worship song—how does it change your readiness to listen to God?
[36:10]
Worship songs rooted in Scripture help us remember God’s faithfulness, power, and promises in our lives.
Luke 6:48 (NIV)
"They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built."
Reflection: Think of a worship song you know that is based on Scripture—how does it remind you of God’s promises, and how can you let that truth shape your actions today?
[39:41]
Our worship is a response to God’s grace and victory in Christ, and singing is a way to express our gratitude and joy.
Psalm 100:1-2 (NIV)
"Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs."
Reflection: What is one specific way you can respond to God’s grace with joy today—whether through singing, serving, or sharing His love with someone else?
[41:07]
Gathering as the body of Christ is a privilege and a joy, and today we began a new series exploring the “church words” that shape our faith and practice—words so familiar in our gatherings that we rarely pause to consider their depth. These words—worship, communion, baptism, and fellowship—are not just part of our church vocabulary; they are foundational to our life with God and with one another. Today, we focused on worship, seeking to understand not just what we do, but why we do it, and how it transforms us.
Worship is often equated with music, but its true meaning is far broader. Drawing from Romans 12, we see that worship is offering our whole selves—our bodies, our actions, our lives—as a living and holy sacrifice to God. This is not a passive or easy calling; it is an active, set-apart way of life that places God’s will above our own desires. In the Old Testament, worship involved animal and grain sacrifices, but through Jesus, the final sacrifice has been made. Now, God calls us to bring ourselves, to orient every part of our lives around Him, and to let our daily living be an act of worship.
Yet, singing remains a vital part of our worship. Scripture commands us—over 400 times, in fact—to sing to the Lord, and 50 of those are direct commands. Singing is not just tradition; it is obedience, and it is communal. We sing together to express our gratitude, to remind ourselves of God’s faithfulness, and to prepare our hearts to receive what God wants to teach us. The songs we sing are rooted in Scripture and theology, helping us remember God’s Word, reflect on His glory, and respond to His grace.
Singing in worship is more than a ritual; it is a tool God uses to shape us. It helps us remember His promises, reflect on His character, and respond with thanksgiving for His mercy and grace. Whether or not we feel like singers, God invites us to lift our voices—not because He needs our praise, but because we need to praise Him. In doing so, we are drawn deeper into the life He offers, a life marked by joy, gratitude, and transformation.
Romans 12:1 (NIV) — > Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.
Colossians 3:16 (NIV) — > Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.
Ephesians 5:18b-20 (NIV) — > ...be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Worship is not primarily a genre of music. It's not primarily a genre of music. In fact, it's not a music thing at all. That's not the point of worship. That's not what that word is necessarily referring to. Again, it's part of it. But that's certainly not the whole thing. And if we think of it as the whole thing, then we've been given a misconception. We've been mistaught. [00:27:47] (21 seconds) #LivingHolySacrifice
You are to worship God with your whole life, the all of your life and to find ways to worship him in all contexts of your life. There are not limits to where God does not reach into your life. And you see, you sacrifice the things that you want to see come to fruition. You sacrifice the outcomes that you want to see happen, the things that you want to do maybe. You sacrifice those things in order to make sure you are honoring and glorifying God in all of those situations, to put God's will first before your own. [00:29:24] (28 seconds) #FinalSacrificeLove

Instead, though, you don't need to sacrifice animals. Leave the goats at home, okay? You don't need to sacrifice your grain or your food or anything. No. Instead, I want you to bring yourself. I want you to bring you, your life, your actions, the way you carry yourself, the way you view the world, the way you view other people, the way you view my creation, even the crown jewel of my creation. I want you to bring those things. And I want you to focus those things around me now, around God. [00:30:59] (24 seconds) #SacrificeBringsLife
Only way is by giving your life as a sacrifice to God, living and holy, actionable and set apart. It's this. This is truly the way that you worship. This is truly the way that you get what God has truly promised you, life. And life is just in the best possible way that it can be. [00:32:04] (18 seconds) #SingBecauseGodSays
And the point is this, scripture obviously tells us to sing. That's pretty clear. But they also give us instruction how. This is when you sing, it's with thankful hearts, and it's together, in community. And when you do that, I don't want you to think it's empty. Your hearts will resonate with worship for God. The song that God has placed in us, that song of praise and thanksgiving, knowing we have something to be thankful for, the acknowledgement of who God is and what he has done, and the fact that God is living in us, all of that will begin to pour out.
