Worship: A Life of Sacrifice and Obedience
Summary
Summary:
Today, we explored the profound concept of worship, emphasizing that it transcends music styles, church services, and personal preferences. Worship is not about us; it is about glorifying God and focusing on Him. True worship is motivated by love, gratitude, and joy, and it is the first purpose of our lives. We delved into the story of Abraham and Isaac to illustrate worship that withstands life's hardest tests. Abraham's willingness to sacrifice Isaac, his beloved son, exemplifies a faith that trusts God completely, even when it defies logic and personal desires. This act of obedience was a profound act of worship, demonstrating that worship is about offering our whole lives to God, not just our time in church.
Worship is a lifestyle, a continuous offering of ourselves to God in everything we do. It involves listening to God, responding to His guidance, and prioritizing His will over our own desires. We are challenged to examine our lives and identify anything we might love more than God, as these can become idols that hinder our worship. Abraham's story points us to Jesus, who carried the wood of the cross and became the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. Through His sacrifice, we are invited to live a life of worship, in relationship with God. This is the gospel, the good news that through Jesus, our sins are forgiven, and we can live a life of worship.

Day 1: Worship as a Life's Purpose
Worship is not confined to music or church services; it is about glorifying God and focusing on Him, motivated by love, gratitude, and joy. True worship is the first purpose of our lives and should permeate every aspect of our existence. It is a continuous offering of ourselves to God in everything we do. Worship involves listening to God, responding to His guidance, and prioritizing His will over our own desires. It is not limited to Sunday mornings but is a lifestyle that reflects our relationship with God. By examining our lives, we can identify anything we might love more than God, as these can become idols that hinder our worship. [04:09]
Psalm 95:6-7 (ESV): "Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand."
Reflection: What is one area of your daily routine where you can intentionally focus on glorifying God today?
Day 2: Trusting God Completely
Abraham's willingness to sacrifice Isaac demonstrates a faith that trusts God completely, even when it defies logic. This act of obedience was a profound act of worship, showing that true worship involves offering our whole lives to God. Abraham's story illustrates that worship is not about our personal desires but about trusting God's plan and purpose for our lives. It challenges us to examine our faith and consider whether we are willing to trust God completely, even when it requires sacrifice. [12:35]
Hebrews 11:17-19 (ESV): "By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, of whom it was said, 'Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.' He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back."
Reflection: Is there a situation in your life where you need to trust God more fully, even if it seems illogical or difficult?
Day 3: Worship as a Continuous Offering
Worship is a lifestyle, a continuous offering of ourselves to God in everything we do. It involves listening to God, responding to His guidance, and prioritizing His will over our own desires. Worship is not limited to Sunday mornings but is a lifestyle that reflects our relationship with God. By examining our lives, we can identify anything we might love more than God, as these can become idols that hinder our worship. True worship requires us to put God first, above all else. [19:28]
Romans 12:1 (ESV): "I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship."
Reflection: What is one practical way you can offer yourself to God in your daily activities today?
Day 4: Identifying and Removing Idols
We are challenged to examine our lives and identify anything we might love more than God, as these can become idols that hinder our worship. True worship requires us to put God first, above all else. By identifying and removing these idols, we can deepen our relationship with God and live a life of worship. This process involves self-reflection and a willingness to surrender our desires to God, trusting that His plans for us are greater than our own. [28:44]
Ezekiel 14:6 (ESV): "Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: Repent and turn away from your idols, and turn away your faces from all your abominations."
Reflection: What is one thing in your life that you might be prioritizing over God, and how can you begin to shift your focus back to Him?
Day 5: The Gospel and a Life of Worship
Abraham's story points us to Jesus, who became the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. Through His sacrifice, we are invited to live a life of worship, in relationship with God. This is the gospel, the good news that through Jesus, our sins are forgiven, and we can live a life of worship. By embracing this truth, we can experience the joy and freedom that comes from living a life centered on God. [43:25]
Colossians 3:16-17 (ESV): "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."
Reflection: How can you incorporate the gospel message into your daily life, allowing it to transform your actions and attitudes into acts of worship?
Quotes
Instead of asking, was the service good? Ask this. How was my engagement? Let me further qualify that. Was it relational? Or was it routine? How was my engagement? That's hell. How was my heart? Did God's word stir my heart? And the lyrics stir me to know him more deeply? Or was it effectively Christian karaoke, where we all come along and sing along? We gather to worship together as a family. When we do that, as your pastor, let me encourage you to deliberately shift your focus of yourself and on to God. [00:09:04] (62 seconds)
Abraham worshipped when it didn't make sense. His obedience was prompt and complete. Now, obeying God is often a struggle. You know why that is? Because it may mean of letting go of something that we hold dear. Something that we deeply value. Therefore, there's an instructive lesson to us. Because don't always expect obedience to God to be easy or even, dare I say, natural. Go back to Genesis 2 .5 in your outline. He said to the servants, stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there and we will worship. Abraham viewed his sacrifice as worship. [00:18:53] (49 seconds)
How could Abraham offer to God what was most dear to him, his son Isaac? How could he do that? Here's the key. This was a test. Was Abraham going to be focused on God or was he going to be focused on Isaac? That was a test. He knew God was faithful. In fact, there was something, imagine the logic, the industrial logic that was going through his head. Hold on, God, you promised me one son and you told me this. You even gave me his name and you told me that through him, all of the world will be blessed, i .e. through Abraham, Jesus. [00:35:56] (44 seconds)
Do you love anything or anybody more than Him? Is there anything getting in the way of you making God number one? Numero uno. Is it busyness is getting in the way? Possible. Let's go the opposite extreme down here. Is it laziness that's getting in the way? Is it fear that's getting in the way of you stepping out? Is it pride? Is it over self -absorption? That you are effectively small g God. Friends, as we finish this, realize this. Good things, like Isaac, can become eyes. Adults will worship more than God. [00:42:47] (51 seconds)
Thank you today that it's not just an hour and a bit of worship where we can gather around your word and fellowship together, but that we can walk out of here knowing that our life is planned by you to be an act of living sacrifice and worship to you. Would you by your spirit prompt us today, tomorrow, this week to live a life where we quiet ourselves so that we can listen to you? Would you help us to neglect what so easily betangles us in the natural of this world so that we can obey your direction and thereby showing that you really are the most important person to us? [00:45:07] (46 seconds)
Marvel and rejoice. Let me inject another adjective there. It's enthusiasm. It's enthusiasm. It's enthusiasm. It's enthusiasm. The word comes. Man, nobody ever said, Oh, Ian, you need to go see Kimberly. I couldn't wait to get out the door to see her. There's an enthusiasm. And here's the deal. The more you are focused on God and worshiping him, the more enthusiasm that will rise in your heart. Because, again, enthusiasm comes from two Greek words. En theos. En, E -N, which means in in Greek. And theos, God. The more in God you are, the more enthusiastic you will be for life. [00:32:33] (38 seconds)
Abraham obeyed God and discovered again God's ability to miraculously provide. He had no clue how God was going to solve that. And it was a big, gargantuan problem. At that moment, the angel of the Lord shouted to him from heaven, lay down the knife, do not hurt the boy anyway, for I know that you truly fear God. You have not withheld even your beloved son from me. Can you imagine when you turned around there and saw that lamb? He didn't just feel relief, man. He likely sang and danced all the way home.
