Instead of asking, was the service good? Ask this. How was my engagement? Let me further qualify that. Was it relational? Or was it routine? How was my engagement? That's hell. How was my heart? Did God's word stir my heart? And the lyrics stir me to know him more deeply? Or was it effectively Christian karaoke, where we all come along and sing along? We gather to worship together as a family. When we do that, as your pastor, let me encourage you to deliberately shift your focus of yourself and on to God. Abraham worshipped when it didn't make sense. His obedience was prompt and complete. Now, obeying God is often a struggle. You know why that is? Because it may mean of letting go of something that we hold dear. Something that we deeply value. Therefore, there's an instructive lesson to us. Because don't always expect obedience to God to be easy or even, dare I say, natural. Go back to Genesis 2 .5 in your outline. He said to the servants, stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there and we will worship. Abraham viewed his sacrifice as worship. How could Abraham offer to God what was most dear to him, his son Isaac? How could he do that? Here's the key. This was a test. Was Abraham going to be focused on God or was he going to be focused on Isaac? That was a test. He knew God was faithful. In fact, there was something, imagine the logic, the industrial logic that was going through his head. Hold on, God, you promised me one son and you told me this. You even gave me his name and you told me that through him, all of the world will be blessed, i .e. through Abraham, Jesus. [00:35:56] (44 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

Do you love anything or anybody more than Him? Is there anything getting in the way of you making God number one? Numero uno. Is it busyness is getting in the way? Possible. Let's go the opposite extreme down here. Is it laziness that's getting in the way? Is it fear that's getting in the way of you stepping out? Is it pride? Is it over self -absorption? That you are effectively small g God. Friends, as we finish this, realize this. Good things, like Isaac, can become eyes. Adults will worship more than God. Thank you today that it's not just an hour and a bit of worship where we can gather around your word and fellowship together, but that we can walk out of here knowing that our life is planned by you to be an act of living sacrifice and worship to you. Would you by your spirit prompt us today, tomorrow, this week to live a life where we quiet ourselves so that we can listen to you? Would you help us to neglect what so easily betangles us in the natural of this world so that we can obey your direction and thereby showing that you really are the most important person to us? Marvel and rejoice. Let me inject another adjective there. It's enthusiasm. It's enthusiasm. It's enthusiasm. It's enthusiasm. The word comes. Man, nobody ever said, Oh, Ian, you need to go see Kimberly. I couldn't wait to get out the door to see her. There's an enthusiasm. And here's the deal. The more you are focused on God and worshiping him, the more enthusiasm that will rise in your heart. Because, again, enthusiasm comes from two Greek words. En theos. En, E -N, which means in in Greek. And theos, God. The more in God you are, the more enthusiastic you will be for life. [00:32:33] (38 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

Abraham obeyed God and discovered again God's ability to miraculously provide. He had no clue how God was going to solve that. And it was a big, gargantuan problem. At that moment, the angel of the Lord shouted to him from heaven, lay down the knife, do not hurt the boy anyway, for I know that you truly fear God. You have not withheld even your beloved son from me. Can you imagine when you turned around there and saw that lamb? He didn't just feel relief, man. He likely sang and danced all the way home.
