Paul’s command in Romans 12:2 puts the question of God’s will right in front of believers. God’s good, pleasing, and perfect will does not become clear through simply drifting along and hoping to fall into it. The renewing of the mind matters because thoughts shape feelings, and feelings shape the actions taken with a life.
Discipleship begins with an honest question: not merely, “Am I a disciple?” but “Who or what am I a disciple of?” Human beings do not exist in neutrality. Creation itself shows that life is always becoming: a seed becomes a tree, an egg becomes a bird, and a child becomes an adult. The choice is whether that becoming is toward Jesus or toward something else.
Jesus does not merely offer a ticket to heaven and leave people alone for the journey. Jesus desires to get heaven into people, bringing the ways, thinking, patterns, and lifestyle of God into everyday life. The kingdom prayer calls for God’s will to be done on earth as it is in heaven, and life to the full comes through being formed into the likeness of Christ.
Human complexity calls for grace and honesty. God created people in the image of a triune God, and formation begins even in the womb before it continues through parents, siblings, culture, media, relationships, habits, churches, and countless other influences. Many of those influences are not evil in themselves, but they have left permanent imprints. The reality is that most people have been shaped more by the world than by Jesus.
Transformation requires more than a quick prayer for instant change. The Holy Spirit brings conviction, but believers must stay in step with the Spirit and do the hard work of identifying what formed them. Counseling, trusted relationships, and careful reflection can help uncover why certain reactions, fears, desires, and patterns remain. Identification is not an excuse for sin, and processing is not the final goal. Transformation is the goal.
The fruit of the Spirit becomes a real litmus test: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control reveal where Christ is forming a person and where more surrender is needed. The call is to identify what conforms a life to the world, eliminate what must go, and fill that space with relationships and practices that form a life in Jesus. God brings grace, compassion, mercy, unfailing love, and faithfulness into that process, not shame.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Everybody is being formed by something. Discipleship is not optional because formation is already happening every day. Parents, relationships, entertainment, habits, and culture all carry formative power. Intentional discipleship means refusing to let the loudest influences become the deepest influences. [46:44]
- 2. Jesus wants heaven formed within people. Jesus does not reduce salvation to escaping earth for heaven later. God’s kingdom begins remaking desires, thoughts, and patterns of life now. Life to the full grows as the realities of heaven take root in ordinary human existence. [48:27]
- 3. Identification must lead to transformation. Honest reflection can reveal what has shaped a person, but reflection alone cannot heal or change anyone. Processing the past becomes unhealthy when it turns into a permanent place to live. The Holy Spirit leads believers beyond discovery into real movement, obedience, and greater likeness to Christ. [62:37]
- 4. Elimination creates room for Christ-centered formation. Certain relationships, habits, and patterns cannot remain untouched if they are actively deforming a life. Removing an influence is not enough, because empty spaces need to be filled with godly community and practices. Sacrifice becomes necessary when a person truly wants the will of God more than familiar patterns. [67:10]
- 5. Grace exposes without bringing shame. God does not use the past to declare that a person is beyond hope. Shame says a person is bad, while grace tells the truth about sin and still invites transformation. The God of compassion and unfailing love meets honest self-examination with mercy.
