Bible Reading2 Peter 2:1-22 “There were indeed false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them and will bring swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their depraved ways, and the way of truth will be maligned because of them. They will exploit you in their greed with made-up stories. Their condemnation pronounced long ago is not idle, and their destruction does not sleep. For if God didn’t spare the angels who sinned but cast them into hell and delivered them in chains of utter darkness to be kept for judgment; and if he didn’t spare the ancient world but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others when he brought the flood on the world of the ungodly; and if he reduced the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes and condemned them to extinction, making them an example of what is coming to the ungodly; and if he rescued Lot, distressed by the depraved behavior of the immoral (for as that righteous man lived among them day by day, his righteous soul was tormented by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)— then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment, especially those who follow the polluting desires of the flesh and despise authority. Bold, arrogant people! They are not afraid to slander the glorious ones; however, angels who are greater in might and power do not bring a slanderous charge against them before the Lord. But these people, like irrational animals—creatures of instinct born to be caught and destroyed—slander what they do not understand, and in their destruction they too will be destroyed. They will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done. They consider it a pleasure to carouse in broad daylight. They are spots and blemishes, delighting in their deceptions while they feast with you. They have eyes full of adultery that never stop looking for sin. They seduce unstable people and have hearts trained in greed. Children under a curse! They have gone astray by abandoning the straight path and have followed the path of Balaam, the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of wickedness but received a rebuke for his lawlessness: A speechless donkey spoke with a human voice and restrained the prophet’s madness. These people are springs without water, mists driven by a storm. The gloom of darkness has been reserved for them. For by uttering boastful, empty words, they seduce, with fleshly desires and debauchery, people who have barely escaped from those who live in error. They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption, since people are enslaved to whatever defeats them. For if, having escaped the world’s impurity through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in these things and defeated, then the last state is worse for them than the first. For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy command delivered to them. It has happened to them according to the true proverb: A dog returns to its own vomit, and, “A washed sow returns to wallowing in the mud.””

[00:32:10]John 10:7-18 “Jesus said again, ‘Truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep didn’t listen to them. I am the gate. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will come in and go out and find pasture. A thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand, since he is not the shepherd and doesn’t own the sheep, leaves them and runs away when he sees a wolf coming. The wolf then snatches and scatters them. This happens because he is a hired hand and doesn’t care about the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own, and my own know me, just as the Father knows me, and I know the Father. I lay down my life for the sheep. But I have other sheep that are not from this sheep pen; I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. Then there will be one flock, one shepherd. This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life so that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have the right to lay it down, and I have the right to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father.’”

Interpretation questions- Peter says false teachers “deny the Master who bought them,” even while using religious language. What might that denial look like in real church life, especially when a person sounds Christian but will not submit to Jesus as Lord? [00:46:27]
- Peter says many will follow these people, and the way of truth will be maligned because of them. Why does destructive behavior from religious people so deeply shake others’ trust in Jesus? [00:48:06]
- Verse 9 says the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and keep the unrighteous for judgment. How does that truth help someone who has been confused, pressured, or spiritually used by others? [01:00:05]
- Peter says false teachers promise freedom while they themselves are slaves of corruption. What kind of “freedom” is being offered there, and why does it end up becoming another form of slavery? [01:09:22]
Application questions- Jesus labels are not enough; fruit matters. When listening to a teacher, author, influencer, or ministry voice, what fruit is usually easiest for this group to notice, and what fruit is easiest to ignore? [01:16:01]
- Wolves use people as projects instead of loving them as sons and daughters of King Jesus. Has there been a relationship, ministry setting, or church experience where someone seemed more interested in usefulness, access, money, or control than in actual care for the soul? How did that affect trust? [00:53:15]
- People are enslaved to whatever defeats them. Where is the pull toward false freedom strongest right now—approval, comfort, money, sexual sin, control, bitterness, or something else? What helps bring that area back under the lordship of Christ? [01:09:22]
- God’s judgment is good because exploitation and spiritual abuse do not get the last word. Is that easy or hard to believe personally? Where would a stronger trust in God’s justice bring relief right now? [01:00:05]
- Transparency helps expose Christian facade. What kind of honesty makes a person safer to follow, and what kind of polished image should make believers slow down and pay attention? [01:17:33]
- Jesus is the standard, the measuring stick, and the way out of confusion. When something sounds spiritual but feels off, what does it look like in practice to “run back to Jesus”? What habits help do that quickly instead of drifting? [01:19:16]
- Some days feel defeated, and other days feel merely distracted. Which is the bigger danger in this season for this group, and how might distraction make a person more vulnerable to wrong voices? [00:20:39]
