Jeremiah 29 first sets the frame with Israel under a seventy year sentence because of idolatry and disobedience. God’s promise of “an expected end” does not float free from repentance, punishment, and submission to his dealings. God says he will be found when his people seek him with all their heart, because God either has all of a person or he has none of that person. Mark 8 then gives the plain terms of following Christ: “let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”

Song of Solomon 5 gives the picture that carries the weight. The bride sleeps, but her heart wakes, and the voice of her beloved knocks at the door. He has come through the night, his head filled with dew, simply because he wants to be with her. His love is not cold, lazy, or selfish. His love pursues.

The bride answers with reasons that make practical sense. Her coat is off. Her feet are washed. She is already in bed. The late night visit is inconvenient, and the inconvenience feels stronger in the moment than the privilege of being with him. Her refusal is not painted as some scandalous outward sin. It is the smaller, quieter thing that often keeps devotion from Christ: convenience.

The beloved reaches for the latch, and her heart finally moves toward him. The myrrh on the lock shows his care, his thoughtfulness, and the sweetness of his presence. But when she opens, he is gone. Love had persisted, but love also knew when to withdraw after being refused. The bride’s own words tell the truth: “My soul failed when he spake.” All the reasons disappear once the opportunity is gone.

The watchmen wound her, and the city becomes dangerous because she never should have been out there looking for what had already come to her door. Her friends ask the hard question: “What is thy beloved more than another beloved?” If he is altogether lovely now, why was he not worth getting up for then?

Her answer rises into worship. She describes him from head to foot, then finally gives up and says, “He is altogether lovely.” Christ is greater than every other beloved, not first because of what he gives, but because of who he is. Yet he has also sought, saved, forgiven, lifted, healed, guided, and prayed for his people. The call to the church is simple and searching: reasons for neglecting Scripture, prayer, church, witness, and obedience may sound practical now, but many of them are only excuses to avoid inconvenience. Convenience kills devotion, but wholehearted seeking finds him again.
