True wisdom is not simply about knowing the right things or sounding intelligent; it is about living out what you know in a way that honors God. Wisdom is right knowledge rightly applied, and it is shown through good conduct and gentle actions. The world may define wisdom as cleverness or age, but God desires that His people live wisely by letting their actions reflect His character. Ask yourself if your life is marked by the gentleness and goodness that come from true wisdom, and remember that wisdom is for everyone who seeks to live according to God’s ways. [11:38]
James 3:13 (ESV)
"Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom."
Reflection: In what area of your life do your actions need to better reflect the wisdom you claim to have? What is one step you can take today to let your conduct show God’s wisdom?
Not all wisdom is from God; some wisdom is rooted in the world, driven by envy and selfish ambition, and leads to disorder and every evil practice. This kind of wisdom may sound impressive or popular, but it is ultimately destructive and opposed to God’s purposes. Be vigilant about the influences you allow into your mind and heart, especially in a world overflowing with voices and opinions. Examine the fruit of the wisdom you follow—does it produce peace and righteousness, or does it stir up envy, selfishness, and chaos? [18:32]
James 3:14-16 (ESV)
"But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice."
Reflection: What voices or sources of wisdom are you allowing to shape your thinking? Is there one influence you need to limit or remove this week to guard your heart from false wisdom?
Godly wisdom is pure, peace-loving, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial, and sincere. This wisdom is not just about making good decisions, but about living in a way that reflects God’s heart and brings peace to those around you. When you seek wisdom from above, you are asking God to shape your thoughts, attitudes, and actions so that your life produces good fruit. Test the wisdom you receive by its source and its results—does it align with God’s Word and does it lead to peace, mercy, and righteousness? [27:37]
James 3:17-18 (ESV)
"But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace."
Reflection: Which quality of godly wisdom do you most need to grow in right now—purity, peace, gentleness, mercy, or sincerity? How can you intentionally cultivate that quality in your interactions today?
The evidence of true wisdom is seen in the fruit it produces: a life marked by peace, righteousness, and a willingness to bring others along in the journey of faith. God calls His people not only to live wisely themselves but to sow seeds of righteousness in the lives of others, teaching and encouraging them to pursue wisdom from above. Even if you feel you don’t know much, if you know enough to live it, you know enough to share it. Look for opportunities to cultivate peace and righteousness in your relationships and community. [36:25]
James 3:18 (ESV)
"And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace."
Reflection: Who is one person you can encourage or help grow in godly wisdom this week? What practical step can you take to sow peace and righteousness in their life?
God does not leave His people without hope or help; He invites everyone who lacks wisdom to ask Him, and He promises to give generously without finding fault. No matter where you feel inadequate or confused—whether in parenting, relationships, work, or faith—God delights to answer the prayer for wisdom. Come honestly before Him, admit where you lack, and trust that He will provide the guidance and understanding you need for every situation. [38:19]
James 1:5 (ESV)
"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him."
Reflection: Where do you most need God’s wisdom right now? Take a moment to specifically ask Him for wisdom in that area, trusting that He will answer.
Today, we gathered to explore the deep and practical wisdom found in James chapter 3, focusing on the difference between wisdom that comes from above and the so-called wisdom that comes from below. We began by celebrating the generosity and progress of our church family, recognizing that our mission is to make room for more people to find and follow Jesus. But as we turn to the Scriptures, James challenges us to consider what true wisdom looks like—not just in theory, but in the way we live our lives.
Wisdom, as James describes, is not simply intelligence, age, or the ability to say clever things. It is right knowledge rightly applied. The world is full of voices—on social media, in our workplaces, even in our own homes—offering advice and opinions. But James draws a sharp line between wisdom that is earthly, unspiritual, and demonic, and wisdom that is pure, peace-loving, gentle, compliant, full of mercy, unwavering, and without pretense.
Earthly wisdom, James warns, is marked by bitter envy and selfish ambition. It produces disorder and every kind of evil practice. We must be vigilant about what we allow to shape our thinking, especially in a world where influencers and content creators abound. If the fruit of our lives is envy, bitterness, or chaos, we need to examine the source of our wisdom.
In contrast, wisdom from above is first pure. It seeks holiness and integrity before God, not just outward appearances. It loves peace, promotes gentleness, and is willing to accommodate others as far as God allows, without compromising on truth. It is full of mercy, rejoicing when forgiveness is given, and it is unwavering—holding fast to God’s Word even when it’s difficult or unpopular. Most importantly, it is genuine, without pretense or hypocrisy.
James calls us not only to seek this wisdom for ourselves but to sow it in peace, teaching and encouraging others to walk in it as well. And when we lack wisdom, we are invited to ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault. For those who do not yet know Christ, the first step is to seek Him, for only in Him is the path to true wisdom opened.
True wisdom is demonstrated by good conduct. Good conduct. Uh if you were to ask people today, how would you define wisdom? What is wisdom? Uh well, here's some things that I need you to know off the bat. Wisdom is not smarts. It's not the same thing. It's not general intelligence or facts, right? Uh you can think of uh bluecollar people versus white collar people and one of those segments thinks that they're wiser, smarter than the other. [00:11:38]
Wisdom is right knowledge rightly applied. So it's not just knowing the things, it's actually applying the things that you know in order to uh to to to move your life more in the direction of what God wants for you. We'll talk more about that in just a minute. [00:13:04]
If you ask the question today, how do you tell which wisdom is which? What's the good wisdom today? What's the bad wisdom wisdom today? Well, here's what James would say. Check the fruit. Like a a bad apple tree produces rotten apples. A good apple tree produces good apples. [00:17:09]
And what James is saying to us, is that when you engage with worldly wisdom, they've got you right where they want you. Let let me let me step into today's world for you, friends. Be so careful. be so careful because bad wisdom abounds today. [00:21:52]
You and I have instant, immediate, and amazing access to a world of thought and content that comes from an unspiritual earthly demonic realm. It's on YouTube. It's on Tik Tok. It's on Twitter X. It's on Instagram. It's on Facebook. It's all over the internet. [00:22:20]
If the influencers who are influencing you are not getting their influence from God, from the Bible, then friend, be so careful. And hey, can I step uh can I can I step into your business a minute just for a second? Hey parents, you've got a responsibility here. Protect your kids because there are people out there who want to disciple them. And if you're not doing it, those people will. [00:23:41]
Believer Christian, if bitterness and selfish ambition and envy characterize the content that's in your heart, man, you need to check yourself because the wisdom that you have is not coming from the Lord. Look into your heart, friend, and ask the question, what's the content? What's the fruit? [00:24:35]
If you look at the world around us, including the conversations that our leaders have and the uh the way that we engage on social media frequently, um then man, you can see that earthly wisdom abounds. It's everywhere, right? Never seen so many people get so mad about a little town growing up, adding some new buildings, expanding some traffic lanes, or maybe not expanding traffic lanes where traffic lanes need to be expanded. [00:25:56]
If you’re watching a video and you’re thinking, "Is this good thinking? Is this good wisdom? Should I apply this to my life? Here's what you should ask. Does it come from above? Can I find this in the Bible? Can I find this as God's instruction or is this just something that somebody made up?" [00:27:03]
Is the thinking that goes on in your mind pure? Is it holy? Does it honor God? If you stood before God and your brain was an open book, which it is all the time, by the way, uh then then would he be pleased? Hey, if not, then then there's some correction that needs to happen. [00:28:19]
You get purity by placing yourself in the sight of God and living your life as if every step you took, he's standing right there watching you. Every action that you make, he's standing right there watching you. Because by the way, friend, he is. [00:29:03]
If it doesn't do you any good to remind yourself that you represent the Lord God when you're on social media, then please remember that you represent Corey Church when you're on social media. Okay? And uh and and the way that we make an impression around us matters. It really really does. [00:30:00]
There's a lot of diversity in the body of Christ. There's people who uh look different, who talk different, who um live different. There's people who think that one thing is okay and another group of Christian people who would look at that and say that's not okay. You know, there's a lot of diversity in the body of Christ. But what God is accepting of, the wisdom from above looks at and says, "Hey, you need to you need to be compliant with your brothers and sisters in the faith." [00:31:49]
The wisdom that comes from above rejoices in that. The wisdom that comes from above then is unwavering. Hey, a lot of us get this one wrong. The call here is to take what this book teaches and hold the line. There are a lot of people in our world today who want to give up the line in so many different ways from what this book teaches. [00:33:11]
Don't give up. Don't bail out on God just because he said something that you disagree with. Don't bail out on your faith just because you don't like what the Bible teaches about one or two particular topics. Hold the line. And if you've got questions, then talk to somebody about it. [00:34:07]
