Choosing Wisdom: Finding the Good Life in Christ

The desire for the good life is not wrong. God placed that longing deep inside the human heart. The problem is not that people want life, happiness, meaning, family, peace, and satisfaction. The problem is that the good life keeps getting searched for in the wrong places.

The image of Oscar Ramirez and his daughter Valeria shows how far a person will go when he believes that a better life is on the other side of the river. That river becomes a picture of every boundary people cross for success, money, security, beauty, influence, or love. Genesis says that Adam and Eve already had the good life because they lived within God’s reach. The serpent’s lie was not simply about fruit, but about the suspicion that God was holding something back.

Cain’s city and Babel’s tower show the same human story. People keep trying to build another Eden. Exodus shows God calling Israel out of slavery into a land flowing with milk and honey, but the real goodness of that land was that God would live among them. The law became the guideline for a freed people learning how to live side by side with a holy God.

Proverbs takes up that same call and says, “My son, listen.” Wisdom is more precious than silver, gold, and rubies because wisdom is the way back to the tree of life. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and wisdom is the good life rightly ordered under God.

Proverbs 31 brings the mother’s voice to her son. Lemuel’s mother warns against spending strength on pleasure, drunkenness, and women understood as harems and concubines. The king must not be wasted because the king must render justice, speak up for those who cannot speak, and defend the poor and needy. Righteousness is not mere religiosity. The rich man’s sin toward Lazarus was seeing suffering every day and doing nothing.

The wife of noble character shows that the good life is not built on beauty, charm, or status. “Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting,” but the person who fears the Lord is to be praised. Character is nonnegotiable, whether in a wife or a husband. The most beautiful person in Proverbs 31 is not the prettiest person, but the one shaped by righteousness, compassion, mercy, and the fear of the Lord.

Jesus stands as something greater than Solomon. Wisdom is not finally a principle to admire, but a person to receive. The good life is not waiting on the other side of promotion, relationship, accomplishment, or the American dream. The good life is found in Jesus, who came that people may have life and have it to the full.
