God creates people wired for worship. Worship is not just music on a Sunday morning. Worship is the natural response of the heart toward whatever it treasures most, the thing it bends toward, reaches for, and gives devotion to. Matthew 6 shows that where treasure is, the heart will be also. That means the real question is not whether a person worships, but what sits on the throne.
Idols step into the place that belongs to God. Scripture calls them worthless, rubbish, dung, vanity, a vapor, and a chasing after the wind. God alone is Elohim, El Shaddai, Adonai, the God Most High, the sovereign Creator who made people for Himself. Idols promise something good, but they always leave a broken heart, misplaced trust, and a life robbed of what it was designed to receive from God.
The rich young ruler shows how even a good thing can become an ultimate thing. Wealth itself was not the issue. Wealth had become the thing he could not release, the thing that had plugged into his heart where God belonged. A good thing becomes a bad thing when it becomes the ultimate thing.
Comfort, approval, and success can quietly take that place. Comfort keeps hands soft and feet planted. It avoids hard conversations, skips what stretches faith, and refuses the inconvenient call of God. Approval makes people silent, changing words and convictions to fit the room because someone else’s opinion carries more weight than God’s voice. Success makes people blind and deaf, so locked in on the next level that they stop seeing the spouse, child, coworker, or hurting person right in front of them.
Psalm 115 warns that those who make idols become like them. Comfort makes a person numb. Approval makes a person silent. Success makes a person blind and deaf. Romans 1 shows the darkness that comes when people pull the plug on what they were wired for and try to force worship into some other outlet. Created things cannot carry the weight of the Creator.
God calls for repentance, for a turning away from the specific idols that have captured the heart. God also calls for more than an empty throne. An empty throne will always invite something else to slide back in. Christ must be put back in His rightful place. Everything was created by Him and for Him, and only the living God can fulfill the heart designed to worship Him.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Worship always has an object Worship is as natural as breathing, sleeping, and eating because God built that capacity into the human heart. The heart will always move toward something it treasures, whether that thing is God, comfort, people, money, or achievement. The issue is not whether devotion exists, but whether devotion has reached its rightful destination. [32:11]
- 2. Good things can become ultimate things Money, success, rest, and approval are not automatically evil. A good gift becomes an idol when it begins to define worth, direct decisions, or demand the allegiance that belongs to God alone. The rich young ruler walked away sad because his treasure had become too central to surrender. [43:43]
- 3. Comfort can make hearts numb Comfort promises peace, but it can produce a life that is too padded to obey. Comfort avoids the hard conversation, the costly act of service, and the place where faith must stretch. God often puts a need before a believer because He has also given that believer some way to respond. [54:30]
- 4. Approval can make believers silent Approval becomes an idol when another person’s opinion has more power than God’s voice. Fear of rejection can make convictions shift from room to room and can turn needed honesty into silence. God does not call His people to perform for acceptance, but to live under His already-given love and authority. [55:41]
- 5. God must reclaim the throne Repentance means turning from the thing that has taken God’s place, but turning alone leaves the throne empty. An empty throne will not stay empty for long because the heart is wired to worship. Christ must be restored as Lord, not simply added alongside competing loves.
