Winning the Battle of the Mind with Christ
Summary
In today's message, we explored the profound concept of winning the battle of our minds and stories. Drawing from Paul's words to the Corinthians, we are reminded that while we live in the world, our battles are not fought with worldly weapons. Instead, we wield divine power to demolish strongholds—those mental outposts of resistance against God's kingdom. These strongholds are not external but reside within our minds, manifesting as thoughts and arguments that oppose the knowledge of God. Our challenge is to take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ, transforming them into forces for joy, love, and generosity.
Taking a thought captive means rendering it powerless to harm us or others. It involves aligning our thoughts with Christ, ensuring they serve His purposes rather than our selfish desires. This process is not about monitoring every single thought but cultivating a life where our natural thoughts align with God's will. It's a daily battle, requiring us to reject thoughts that seek to master us and instead submit them to the greater authority of Christ.
In practical terms, this means being mindful of our thoughts in everyday situations, whether playing a game of golf or interacting with loved ones. We must resist the temptation to let circumstances dictate our attitudes and behaviors. Instead, we seek God's help to bring joy and generosity into every interaction, recognizing that every moment and thought is an opportunity to follow Jesus.
Paul warns against judging by appearances, reminding us that reality often lies beneath the surface. The story of Jesus exemplifies this truth, where seemingly insignificant events hold profound spiritual significance. We are encouraged to look beyond the surface and recognize the divine narrative unfolding in our lives.
Ultimately, our stories matter immensely, and God is present in them. The battle for our minds is ongoing, but with divine help, we can align our thoughts with what is noble, life-giving, and loving. May we live each day as a testament to the story God is writing through us.

Devotional
Day 1: Divine Power Over Worldly Weapons
Our battles are not fought with coercive power but with divine strength to demolish mental strongholds. These strongholds are internal, residing in our thoughts and arguments against God's knowledge. We must take every thought captive to align it with Christ's will. This means recognizing the power of divine intervention in our mental struggles and understanding that our true strength comes from God. By relying on divine power, we can overcome the internal resistance that keeps us from fully embracing God's truth. [01:22]
"For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds." (2 Corinthians 10:3-4, ESV)
Reflection: What is one mental stronghold you are currently facing, and how can you invite God's divine power to help you overcome it today?
Day 2: Captivity and Obedience of Thoughts
Capturing a thought means rendering it powerless to harm us or others. When aligned with Christ, our thoughts serve joy, love, and generosity. This transformation requires daily vigilance and submission to Christ's authority. It involves a conscious effort to evaluate our thoughts and ensure they align with the teachings of Jesus. By doing so, we can transform our mental landscape into one that reflects the values of the Kingdom of God. [02:44]
"We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ." (2 Corinthians 10:5, ESV)
Reflection: Identify a recurring thought that does not align with Christ's teachings. How can you begin to take it captive and transform it into a thought that serves joy and love?
Day 3: Mindfulness in Everyday Life
In daily interactions, we must resist letting circumstances dictate our attitudes. By seeking God's help, we can bring joy and generosity into every moment, recognizing each thought as an opportunity to follow Jesus. This mindfulness requires us to be present in each moment, aware of our thoughts and actions, and intentional about aligning them with God's will. It is a practice of constant awareness and submission to God's guidance in our everyday lives. [05:18]
"Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth." (Colossians 3:2, ESV)
Reflection: Think of a recent situation where you let circumstances dictate your attitude. How can you approach similar situations differently by seeking God's help to bring joy and generosity?
Day 4: Judging Beyond Appearances
Paul warns against judging by appearances, urging us to see beyond the surface. The story of Jesus teaches us that seemingly insignificant events can hold profound spiritual significance. We must look deeper to recognize the divine narrative in our lives. This means being open to the unexpected ways God may be working in and through us, even in the mundane or overlooked aspects of our lives. [07:19]
"Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment." (John 7:24, ESV)
Reflection: Reflect on a recent event or interaction that seemed insignificant. How might God be using it to reveal a deeper spiritual truth or opportunity for growth?
Day 5: The Importance of Our Stories
Our stories matter immensely, and God is present in them. The battle for our minds is ongoing, but with divine help, we can align our thoughts with what is noble, life-giving, and loving. May we live each day as a testament to the story God is writing through us. Recognizing the significance of our personal narratives allows us to see God's hand in our lives and encourages us to live in a way that reflects His love and purpose. [10:42]
"And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." (Romans 8:28, ESV)
Reflection: Consider your life story and identify a moment where you clearly saw God's presence. How can you use this story to encourage others and testify to God's work in your life?
Quotes
The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. They're not weapons of coercive power. On the contrary, they have divine power. We're going to need God's help to demolish strongholds. Now, what's a stronghold? A stronghold is an outpost of resistance to a kingdom. [00:01:16]
We demolish arguments, so a stronghold apparently is kind of parallel to an argument, to a thought. In other words, those little pockets of resistance to the kingdom of God exist primarily not out there somewhere in some weird spooky place, but actually in my mind, in the way that I'm thinking. [00:01:37]
We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. Now, what does it mean to take a thought just a little thought captive? Well, when something has been taken captive, it's no longer able to do damage. It's no longer able to fight against me and against the cause, the kingdom that I seek to align myself with. [00:02:09]
The invitation is to enter into a way of life where the thoughts that naturally occur to us become thoughts that have been taken captive, that are serving the great and noble purposes for which my story is being written. So here's the question: am I seeking to take every thought captive? [00:03:21]
I have a master, and he is greater and nobler than you, and you, little thought, and I will bend the knee and allow him to reign. But now you know your story involves the ordinary events of a day, and the question is, will I bring this battle where I'm praying and asking for God's help? [00:04:09]
Every moment, every thought does. And then that thought came: am I seeking, am I even trying to take every thought captive? The way that I'm living right now is, well, if things go well, if I'm performing in the way that I want to, then I can be happy, then I can be joyful. [00:05:08]
I know I don't want to be the kind of person whose life and attitude and behavior is dictated by external circumstances. I know I don't want that. So God, would you help me? And then I could see to bring joy and actually get to know the two people that I was playing with. [00:05:55]
The danger is that we just miss it, that you miss the story and you miss the battle, and those little thoughts just march on like rebellious soldiers doing damage. So Paul goes on to say to the Corinthians here, you judge by appearances. [00:06:52]
Over and over and over in story, we learn how easy it is for us to be deceived by appearance and not to see reality. This is deeply woven into the ultimate story, the story of Jesus. How unimportant a carpenter appears, a baby who's born in a manger and wrapped in swaddling clothes. [00:07:24]
Things are not what they seem. Your story matters immensely, and God is present in it, and it will be a battle, but we bring weapons to it that are not of purely human origin. God, would you help me all through this day to take every thought captive so that it could be obedient? [00:10:42]
May I live today, God, the story that you have for me. Oh God, oh God, oh God, renew my mind and make the story today, no matter how small or obscure or insignificant it looks, make it a great one in your eyes. I ask this for you and for me in Jesus' name. [00:11:16]
