#NewCovenantGrace
“``The water that turns into wine in the ceremonial jars is a sign of this new covenant that Jesus has come to bring, his blood that will be sacrificed for each one of us. The wine is a sign of the abundance and generous grace of this new covenant. Amen. Thank you Jesus. And John is introducing us to the true bridegroom here, who will one day lay down his life for his bride, the church. And the earthly bridegroom here receives praise for wine that he didn't provide. Meanwhile, the true bridegroom stands quietly in the background. No applause or recognition. He quietly removes shame and brings joy.”

#FromShameToHonor
“And it struck me how sad it would have been for this young couple to start off their married life carrying the social shame and embarrassment of running out of wine at their wedding. Because shame, it makes us feel worthless and it makes us feel like failures. And we all experience it probably a 100 times a day in many different ways. And Jesus didn't come simply to forgive our sins. He came to remove our shame. He came that we might have life and have it to the full. And shame can rob us of that joy and that fullness of life. The transformation that Jesus is bringing here isn't simply water becoming wine, he restores from shame to honor.”

#CleansingBeyondRitual
“These stone jars weren't here for drinking or cooking. Under the Old Testament law, God's people regularly use water like this as part of their worship. It reminded them that sinful people needed cleansing before God. Jews understood that they became ceremonial unceremonially unclean during the normal circumstances of daily life. And were cleansed by the pouring of water over their hands. But here's the problem. The the water could wash their hands clean, but it couldn't wash their hearts. It could never transform the inside. Only Jesus can do that. So Jesus came to do what the water never could, and that's why John tells us exactly what kind of jars they were. Jesus isn't just providing more wine, he's showing us that something better than ritual washing is coming. The cleansing everyone really needs can only come through him.”

#GodInTheOrdinary
“But I love that this first sign, this miracle of Jesus, doesn't happen in the temple or a synagogue. It happens at a wedding. A family celebration full of joy, food, laughter, friendship. It's normal, ordinary life. And sometimes I think I need reminding that God shows up and does his work in me, in us, in the ordinary, and even the mundane business stuff of life. We can fall into the trap of expecting to meet God only in obviously spiritual places or moments. Yet time and time again, when we read the gospel accounts, Jesus uses very ordinary moments to show up and to show us God's glory, and this wedding is one of those moments.”
