Psalm 88 gives voice to the ache of a person crying out, “Oh Lord, why do you reject me? Why do you turn your face from me?” The text does not pretend that God’s people always feel close to God. David knew that kind of darkness, and Jesus himself cried out from the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Yet feeling forsaken is not the same as being forsaken. Feelings are real, but feelings are not facts.
Feelings can lie. A person can feel that someone is mad when they are not. A believer can feel that God is absent when God is still there. John 6 shows people standing in the presence of Jesus and still asking for a sign. Jesus was still God even if they did not feel it. God was still in their midst even if they could not recognize him. The presence of God is not limited to holy moments, revival services, tears, or overwhelming emotion. Those moments are real, but they are not twenty four seven. If faith only looks for the miraculous, faith may miss the daily nearness of God.
A hardened heart can also make God feel distant. Matthew 13 says hard hearts can hear and not understand, see and not comprehend. Worship, prayer, Scripture, church, and the things God cares about can become cold when the heart grows cold. Ongoing, habitual sin can take root when it is not confessed, exposed, repented of, or fought against. Sin cannot be treated like a pet. The pet has to die. The cat has to be killed. A follower of Jesus has to hate what God hates, starting with the sin in the heart before judging the sin in everybody else.
Faith has to lean on something stronger than feelings. The believer does not walk by sight, but by faith. Feelings change with sleep, stress, health, circumstances, and bad news, but God’s character does not change. God is still God when he is felt, and God is still God when he is not.
When feelings become uncertain, Scripture gives the facts. Romans 5 says God proved his love through Christ. Psalm 34 says the Lord is close to the brokenhearted. Romans 8 says God works all things together for good. The cross is permanent evidence that Jesus sees, cares, saves, and stays. The empty tomb says Jesus is alive, and the Spirit within declares that God is with his people.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Feeling forsaken is not forsakenness Feelings can be honest without being final. David’s cry and Jesus’ cry both show that pain can speak plainly before God without proving that God has left. The believer has to learn the difference between emotional weather and spiritual reality. [04:18]
- 2. Do not overthink God’s presence The presence of God is not only found in a dramatic altar moment, a miracle, or a powerful worship experience. John 6 shows people standing right in front of Jesus and still demanding a sign. God may be near even when the soul is looking for something louder. [06:01]
- 3. Pet sin makes hearts cold Unconfessed sin does not stay small and harmless. Sin that is protected, named, and carried around like a pet slowly trains the heart to resist God’s voice. Repentance is not managing the pet, but killing what God hates and bringing it into the light. [15:23]
- 4. Faith must outrank feelings The Christian life cannot be governed by whether the soul feels like obeying, worshiping, serving, giving, or gathering. Faith walks when sight gives no help and feelings offer no fuel. God’s promises become the ground under the feet when emotions keep changing. [21:04]
- 5. The cross settles God’s love God’s love is not proven by the intensity of this week’s emotions. The cross proves it because Jesus took sin, carried judgment, and gave his life. When circumstances argue abandonment, the cross answers with permanent evidence.
