Sermon Summary

The little figure named “me” starts out as the picture of a person living for me, me, me. Sin fills his life with lying, pride, lust, greed, drunkenness, hate, gossip, and all the stuff that feels good for a minute but leaves him broke, depressed, and paying the cost. Prayer surrounds “me” through a grandma, friends, coworkers, and believers asking God to send somebody who will show him the way.

Jesus comes to the unbeliever as the Bridegroom who has already given His yes. Christ’s proposal says, “Before you knew my name, I knew yours,” and offers not a temporary love but a covenant love that will not leave, forsake, or abandon. Faith answers that proposal by admitting sin, trusting Christ’s death and resurrection, receiving forgiveness, and choosing to follow Him.

Scripture becomes the new believer’s way of learning God’s character, history, promises, and heart. Baptism becomes a public declaration that “me” has died to self and now lives a new life in Christ. Obedience puts self in the backseat, because obedience is better than sacrifice and faith without works is dead.

Faith grows through hearing the Word, praying, changing old ways, and trusting God when the outcome cannot yet be seen. Paul’s race calls for blinders like a horse wears, keeping a believer from getting distracted by crowds, lights, other people, or the old life. The armor of God guards the mind, heart, steps, and faith against the enemy’s schemes.

The devil remains a deceiver, accuser, tempter, and intimidator whose old tricks still try to pull people off track. Agreement with his lies gives him room, but God’s Word declares that His children are new creatures, conquerors through Christ, and able to stand in Christ’s finished victory. The Holy Spirit produces a life marked by deep joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
