Who Is My Neighbor? (23 Aug 2026) || Remnant Church Denton

The call to discipleship begins close to home. Denton is the Jerusalem right in front of this body, while Sanger, Crum, and North Carolina belong in their proper place as God expands the work. Jesus makes first things first: faithfulness with what is near prepares God’s people for what is far.

Matthew 25 makes Christianity intensely practical. Christ identifies himself with the hungry, thirsty, stranger, naked, sick, imprisoned, and overlooked, so that giving or withholding becomes a real revelation of relationship with him. The sheep and goats both call him Lord, but their lives produce different fruit. Love for Jesus cannot stay in confession, prayer, or good words when a brother or stranger stands in need.

Judges 5 puts a sharp contrast in front of the household of faith. Reuben sits by the fire searching his heart while Zebulun risks his life in battle. Meroz refuses to come to the help of the Lord by refusing to help God’s people on the front lines, while Jael steps in and does what others should have done. Brotherly love shows up, lays down its life, knows the needs in the family, and fills them instead of waiting for somebody else.

The family of God is formed around those who hear the word and do it. Jonathan’s armor bearer, Ruth, Jonathan, Ittai, and Paul’s companions all show what heart-and-soul loyalty looks like. First John presses the point: love is not merely word or talk, but deed and truth. God’s love fills a person so that person begins filling the needs God places before him.

Luke 10 turns the question from “Who qualifies as my neighbor?” to “Will I become a neighbor?” The Samaritan sees a wounded man, draws near, touches his wounds, spends his resources, changes his plans, and remains responsible for continued care. Love does not stand over a bleeding man asking whether he is worth the damage or the bandage. Christ brought near those who were strangers, dead in trespasses, and completely undeserving. The stranger who has been brought near must become the neighbor.

Fear, distraction, and self-justification all keep hands from moving. Ecclesiastes calls God’s people to sow without waiting for perfect conditions, while Philip shows that obedience often receives further direction along the way. Jesus sees the crowds with compassion and calls for workers in the harvest. The people God puts in front of his servants are not interruptions to the work. They are the field.
