The Truth That Changes Everything: Who Is Jesus?

Jesus’ question, “Who do you say that I am?” brings the whole matter down to the truth that cannot be built on public opinion, passing fads, or whatever seems acceptable at the moment. The desire for a truth that guides a life does not disappear after the grandiose fantasies of adolescence. Christ’s coming into the world gives that desire its real object, not a horrifying invasion that destroys the earth, but God’s own entry into the world to redeem it.

Pilate’s weary question, “What is truth?” names a cynicism that still hangs in the air. The contrast between Pilate’s shrug and Jesus’ claim is sharp: Jesus testifies that truth is real, and everyone on the side of truth listens to him. The truth includes the fallenness and wickedness of the world, but the truth also declares that wickedness is not all there is. God’s sacrificial love is more real, more powerful, and more enduring.

Peter’s confession, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God,” comes from a deeply flawed disciple who is sometimes smart and sometimes stupid, sometimes brave and sometimes cowardly. Jesus’ blessing makes clear that flesh and blood did not reveal this truth to Peter. The Father in heaven revealed it. The truth, then, is not Peter’s achievement or a private spiritual insight. The truth is God’s proclamation that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the living God.

Jesus’ words about the church root its life on solid rock rather than shifting sand. The church receives keys to the kingdom and authority for doing God’s will, not permission to become a little god or to make life easier. The truth will set people free, but first it may make them miserable, because love makes the pain of the world deeper and breaks the rules people use to protect themselves.

God’s love changes everything. Christ’s love makes fools of those who receive it, turns their world around, and never lets them be the same. Jesus’ searching question also becomes, “Who do I say you are?” The truth answers that believers are children of God, free in Christ, God’s handiwork, a new creation, and people worthy and wonderful in the eyes of their Savior. Peter’s life leaves room for hope: if the Lord can use Peter, the Lord can use deeply flawed people still.
