Jesus responds to Peter’s confession by giving Peter a job: “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church.” The church shows that an individual relationship with Jesus, important as it is, is far bigger than any one person. The love Jesus gives requires a village. The body of Christ carries the confession of Jesus as Lord across generations, and the Spirit gives that body a variety of gifts for its work.

The Spirit gives the church its purpose: to transform a broken world to the glory of God in the name of Jesus. The body of Christ becomes Jesus’ eyes, ears, mouth, legs, feet, and hands. Christ’s love also presses toward a practical answer: Does a person know that Jesus loves them more than the very breath of life? That love must shape love of self, neighbor, and God. A person’s answer to Jesus will demonstrate how effectively that life serves God’s kingdom purposes right here and right now.
