Revelation 6:1-17 “Now I watched when the Lamb opened one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures say with a voice like thunder, “Come!” And I looked, and behold, a white horse! And its rider had a bow, and a crown was given to him, and he came out conquering, and to conquer. When he opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, “Come!” And out came another horse, bright red. Its rider was permitted to take peace from the earth, so that people should slay one another, and he was given a great sword. When he opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” And I looked, and behold, a black horse! And its rider had a pair of scales in his hand. And I heard what seemed to be a voice in the midst of the four living creatures, saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius, and do not harm the oil and wine!” When he opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!” And I looked, and behold, a pale horse! And its rider's name was Death, and Hades followed him. And they were given authority over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by wild beasts of the earth. When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne. They cried out with a loud voice, “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” Then they were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers should be complete, who were to be killed as they themselves had been. When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth, the full moon became like blood, and the stars of the sky fell to the earth as the fig tree sheds its winter fruit when shaken by a gale. The sky vanished like a scroll that is being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place. Then the kings of the earth and the great ones and the generals and the rich and the powerful, and everyone, slave and free, hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains, calling to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who is seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb, for the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?”
[25:03]Ezekiel 14:21 “For thus says the Lord GOD: How much more when I send upon Jerusalem my four disastrous acts of judgment, sword, famine, wild beasts, and pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast!”
[34:48]Hosea 10:8 “The high places of Aven, the sin of Israel, shall be destroyed. Thorn and thistle shall grow up on their altars. They shall say to the mountains, “Cover us,” and to the hills, “Fall on us.”
[59:40]Observation questions
- What repeated pattern appears when each of the first four seals is opened, and what is “given” to the riders?
- What limits are placed on the famine and death described under the third and fourth seals? [34:48]
- What do the souls beneath the altar ask God to do, and how does God respond to them?
- Which groups of people try to hide when the sixth seal is opened, and what do they seek from the mountains and rocks? [55:13]
Interpretation questions
- What does the repeated language of permission and authority being given to the riders show about Christ’s rule over war, hunger, sickness, and death? [28:48]
- How can God remain holy while people who commit violence remain responsible for the evil they willingly do? [30:53]
- Why are the martyrs given white robes before the final judgment, even though they are still told to wait? [47:26]
- Why do power, wealth, status, and earthly security fail as shelters on the day of the Lamb’s wrath, while those who belong to Christ are able to stand? [01:03:28]
Application questions
- When conflict, scarcity, sickness, or death enters life, what thoughts most quickly tempt a person to believe Christ has lost control? How can the image of the Lamb opening the seals reshape that response? [38:01]
- Earthly order and peace are gifts of God’s grace. Where is there a tendency to take that grace for granted, and how might gratitude lead to greater care for people living through disorder or violence? [31:18]
- Faithful believers are not exempt from suffering. Is there a hardship that has caused a person to wonder whether God is displeased or distant? How does the example of faithful sufferers in Scripture offer courage without giving easy answers? [36:38]
- The martyrs are allowed to ask, “How long?” What injustice, grief, or unanswered burden needs to be brought honestly before God rather than carried alone? [44:44]
- The martyrs entrust judgment to the holy and true God instead of taking vengeance into their own hands. Is there someone whose wrongs need to be placed in God’s hands? What might it look like to pray for that person’s repentance or restraint? [46:11]
- What false shelter is most tempting to trust—money, reputation, comfort, control, success, relationships, or something else? What would it look like this week to take refuge in Christ rather than hide behind that shelter? [01:06:37]
