Judges 16:4-22 “Some time later, he fell in love with a woman in the Valley of Sorek whose name was Delilah. The rulers of the Philistines went to her and said, 'See if you can lure him into showing you the secret of his great strength and how we can overpower him so we may tie him up and subdue him. Each one of us will give you eleven hundred shekels of silver.' So Delilah said to Samson, 'Tell me the secret of your great strength and how you can be tied up and subdued.' Samson answered her, 'If anyone ties me with seven fresh bowstrings that have not been dried, I'll become as weak as any other man.' Then the rulers of the Philistines brought her seven fresh bowstrings that had not been dried, and she tied him with them. With men hidden in the room, she called to him, 'Samson, the Philistines are upon you!' But he snapped the bowstrings as easily as a piece of string snaps when it comes close to a flame. So the secret of his strength was not discovered. Then Delilah said to Samson, 'You have made a fool of me; you lied to me. Come now, tell me how you can be tied.' He said, 'If anyone ties me securely with new ropes that have never been used, I'll become as weak as any other man.' So Delilah took new ropes and tied him with them. Then, with men hidden in the room, she called to him, 'Samson, the Philistines are upon you!' But he snapped the ropes off his arms as if they were threads. Delilah then said to Samson, 'All this time you have been making a fool of me and lying to me. Tell me how you can be tied.' He replied, 'If you weave the seven braids of my head into the fabric on the loom and tighten it with the pin, I'll become as weak as any other man.' So while he was sleeping, Delilah took the seven braids of his head, wove them into the fabric and tightened it with the pin. Again she called to him, 'Samson, the Philistines are upon you!' He awoke from his sleep and pulled up the pin and the loom, with the fabric. Then she said to him, 'How can you say, "I love you," when you won't confide in me? This is the third time you have made a fool of me and haven't told me the secret of your great strength.' With such nagging she prodded him day after day until he was sick to death. So he told her everything. 'No razor has ever been used on my head,' he said, 'because I have been a Nazirite dedicated to God from my mother's womb. If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as any other man.' When Delilah saw that he had told her everything, she sent word to the rulers of the Philistines, 'Come back once more; he has told me everything.' So the rulers of the Philistines returned with the silver in their hands. After putting him to sleep on her lap, she called for someone to shave off the seven braids of his hair, and so began to subdue him. And his strength left him. Then she called, 'Samson, the Philistines are upon you!' He awoke from his sleep and thought, 'I'll go out as before and shake myself free.' But he did not know that the LORD had left him. The Philistines seized him, gouged out his eyes and took him down to Gaza. Binding him with bronze shackles, they set him to grinding grain in the prison. But the hair on his head began to grow again after it had been shaved.”
[22:39]Hebrews 11:32-34 “And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson and Jephthah, about David and Samuel and the prophets, who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions, quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies.”
[21:21]James 4:7 “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
[42:15]Observation questions
- What do the Philistine rulers ask Delilah to discover about Samson, and what do they plan to do with him once they have that information? [23:21]
- What repeated pattern occurs after each of Samson’s first three answers to Delilah, and what does that pattern reveal about the danger he is in? [27:53]
- What losses does Samson experience after he assumes he can escape “as before”? [31:27]
- In Judges 16, what details show a change in Samson between his capture and his final act in the Philistine temple? [48:36]
Interpretation questions
- Hebrews 11 includes Samson among people of faith despite his deeply broken life. What does this show about the difference between being used by God and living faithfully in every area of life? [21:46]
- Delilah uses Samson’s trust, desires, and repeated choices against him. Why can a person continue moving toward danger even after clear warnings have appeared several times? [29:15]
- James 4:7 says believers are to resist the devil. What might resisting look like before temptation has time to become a constant voice in a person’s daily life? [42:04]
- Samson’s hair grows while he is suffering the consequences of his sin. Why is it important to see this as a sign of repentance and renewed obedience rather than as a magical source of power? [48:43]
Application questions
- Sin does not want a small corner of life; it wants to tie up a person’s strength, time, relationships, witness, and obedience. Where do you see a sinful habit or unhealthy desire trying to make you less available for the good works God has given you? [35:25]
- What temptation has been “nagging” at you through a screen, a relationship, a habit, a setting, or a regular routine? What specific boundary could help you stop giving that temptation a place to keep speaking to you? [42:57]
- Samson ignored repeated evidence that Delilah was not safe with his heart or his calling. Are there relationships in your life where you need greater wisdom, clearer boundaries, or honest help from mature believers? [27:22]
- Samson was driven by passion, while Delilah was driven by money. Which desires—such as comfort, approval, sexual temptation, money, success, or control—most easily pull your heart away from wholehearted obedience? [37:09]
- Earthly consequences are not always a sign that God has abandoned His children; God can use them to bring repentance and restoration. Is there a consequence, disappointment, or limitation in your life that may be calling you to turn back to God in a specific area? [45:07]
- God restores genuinely repentant people and uses flawed people whose hearts are turned toward Him. What would genuine repentance look like for you this week—not only feeling sorry, but taking a concrete step of obedience? [49:41]
