Salvation was not free. Christ’s redemption is priceless, and sin matters because one man’s sin brought brokenness, neglect, abandonment, abuse, jealousy, hatred, and death into the human story. The Bible calls God’s people to understand sin rightly, not through a Western church mindset alone, but through the concrete pictures carried in Hebrew language.
The Hebrew language gives physical pictures for deep realities. Anger is the nose because anger flares the nostrils. Patience is a long nose because it is slow to burn. Compassion reaches back to the womb, carrying the picture of a mother’s deep feeling for her child. The Hebrew Bible also uses three distinct words that English Bibles often flatten into one word, sin: kata, avon, and pesa.
Kata gives the first picture. Kata is an archery and military word before it is ever used as a religious word. Judges 20:16 uses kata for seven hundred left-handed Benjamite warriors who could sling a stone at a hair and not miss. Kata means missing the target. Sin, in this first sense, is not merely doing dark things or proving that somebody is worthless. Kata is failing to hit what humanity was made to hit.
The target is love, justice, honesty, mercy, truth, and real relationship with God and people. God created humanity to love Him and love neighbor, to speak truth, act justly, show mercy, and walk faithfully. A person can be busy, sincere, influential, and moving fast, yet still miss the mark. God’s character, God’s Word, and Jesus establish the target, not culture, feelings, or another believer’s compromise.
Romans 3 holds both the problem and the hope together. All have sinned and fall short, yet all who receive Christ are justified freely by grace through redemption. Grace does not make people casual about wrong. Grace makes people honest enough to say, “Lord, here is the wrong I have committed.” Good intentions do not erase harmful consequences when anger becomes humiliation, frustration becomes contempt, protection becomes manipulation, or truth becomes a prideful contest.
Cain shows that God warns before the next decision. Sin crouches at the door before the text is sent, the lie is told, the secret conversation is resumed, or resentment turns into revenge. Kata can wound people standing near the target, because a missed arrow still hits somebody. Confession, instruction, apology, and the next step of obedience correct the aim. God does not move His target down to fit human wounds and excuses. God calls His people to let Him correct their aim.

Key Takeaways
- 1. The target is love and justice. Kata only makes sense when the target is clear. Love for God and neighbor, truthful speech, mercy, and justice are not optional extras to Christian life. They are the bull’s-eye of what a human being was made to be. [26:25]
- 2. Grace must make sin honest. Grace does not give cover for vague excuses such as “everybody makes mistakes.” Grace brings a person into the light to name the actual wrong, receive forgiveness, and face what that wrong did to another person. Christ’s redemption creates honesty, not denial. [45:20]
- 3. Personality remains accountable to Christ. “That's just the way I am” can become a refusal of transformation. Christ does not erase personality, but He does confront speech, anger, pride, and habits that injure others. The character of Christ must shape the way a person talks and responds. [48:26]
- 4. God warns before the next wound. Cain received God’s warning before he murdered Abel. Conviction often comes before the angry message, the lie, the revenge, or the return to hidden compromise. God’s warning is mercy, and silencing it can open the door to a wound that did not have to happen. [50:02]
- 5. Correct the aim, not God’s standard. A missed shot does not require moving the target closer. Confession, instruction, apology, and obedience allow God to correct the aim. Love and forgiveness remain God’s target even when pain makes obedience difficult.
