God is not limited by what people say His people should receive. God is sovereign, and because He could swear by no greater, His promise stands on Himself. Ephesians 3:20 is not a seasonal word, it is an eternal word, and God’s people can have an exceedingly, abundantly, above all moment when faith grabs hold of what His Word already said. Distraction tries to make a temporal situation feel permanent, but prayer presses the heart past what has come and fixes the eyes on the outcome God wants to manifest.

First Samuel 1 shows Hannah in deep anguish, crying bitterly because barrenness had pressed on her life while Peninnah had results in front of her face. Hannah did not come before the Lord full of ambiguity. Hannah asked for a son, and Hannah made a vow that what God gave her would be given back to Him. The request had reverence in it, and the vow had weight on it.

Eli saw Hannah’s lips moving with no sound and assumed she was drunk, but Hannah was pouring out her heart to the Lord. Prayer is not always for people’s ears. Prayer is open communication with God, and sometimes the deepest prayer is coming from a heart so pressed that words do not even come out. Hannah did not have to divulge every detail to Eli, because the cry was aimed at God and God alone.

Hannah’s heart posture lined up with God’s will, not with the pain, not with the mockery, not with what others had. After she prayed, she went back and ate, and she was no longer sad. God had not given her the child yet, but His presence had lifted the anguish. The burden moved before the manifestation showed up.

The Lord remembered Hannah’s plea, and in due time Samuel was born. Chronos time can trap people in waiting, but kairos time is God’s perfect moment. Hannah asked for one son, and God brought forth Samuel, a prophet, then blessed her with more. God is the God of more than enough.

James 5:16 calls for earnest, heartfelt, continued prayer, because the righteous person’s prayer makes tremendous power available. Jeremiah 29 calls for seeking God with all the heart, not part of the heart. Holiness, sovereignty, joy, and praise mark Hannah’s posture, and God’s presence changes inward things and outward conditions.
