Colossians 3 tells believers to set their sights on the realities of heaven, not the things of earth. The command matters because thinking about heaven does not come naturally, especially in a world that acts invincible while every person carries the terminal disease called mortality. Death is coming for everybody unless Jesus comes back first, and every day people step into eternity, either heaven or hell.
Heaven is not a fantasy, a boring cloud-filled existence, or an unending church service where everybody just sings forever. Satan, the father of lies, loves keeping believers uninterested in their future home, terrified of it, or too distracted by earthly things to think about it. Heaven should create the same kind of curiosity as moving permanently to a brand-new country. A future home should make people want to know what is there, what it is like, and how others can get there too.
Paul promises that citizens of heaven will receive new glorified bodies like Christ’s own body. The resurrection means that weak, dying, outdated bodies will be transformed into bodies that never die. Death will be swallowed up in victory, and its sting will be gone forever. Jesus also promises a prepared place in the Father’s house, showing that eternity is not less physical than life now, but physical life made new.
Isaiah, Peter, and John all point toward new heavens and a new earth. Revelation shows the holy city coming down from God, because God’s home will be among His people. Christ does not say He will make random new things. Christ says, “I am making everything new.” The future is a restored creation where sin, sorrow, pain, death, injustice, corruption, and evil are gone forever.
Creation itself is groaning under the curse and waiting for freedom from death and decay. The beauty of beaches, mountains, laughter, food, friendship, and creation already gives a glimpse of what life was meant to be. The right side of heaven will be far more stunning than this broken side. Heaven will not be boring because God will keep revealing the incomparable riches of His grace, and resurrected people will have meaningful, soul-satisfying purpose.
Jesus is the person people were made for, and heaven is the place He has prepared. Hebrews says Christ became flesh and blood, died, and broke the devil’s power of death so people would no longer live as slaves to the fear of dying. The gospel offers the ultimate exchange: Jesus took the death sinners deserved and offers eternal life as a free gift to all who surrender to Him as Lord and Savior.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Think about heaven on purpose Colossians does not present heaven as an optional side topic for believers. The command to think about heaven confronts the natural pull toward whatever is immediate, visible, and earthly. The future home of God’s people reshapes present priorities because eternity is not pretend. [02:21]
- 2. Death does not get the last word Mortality is universal, but Christ has not left His people trapped under its shadow. The resurrection promises more than survival after death: it promises transformed bodies that will never decay. Death is real and grievous, yet it is not victorious for those whose hope is in Jesus. [13:10]
- 3. God is bringing heaven to earth The new creation is not an escape from everything physical, but the restoration of everything sin has ruined. Revelation pictures God dwelling with His people in a renewed world where tears, pain, and death are gone forever. Christ’s final work is to make all things new. [17:14]
- 4. Creation points beyond its brokenness Mountains, oceans, laughter, food, and friendship carry real beauty, even while creation remains cursed and decaying. Romans says creation is groaning and waiting for its own freedom. The beauty of this world should stir hope for the unchained, restored world God has promised. [29:16]
- 5. Jesus frees people from death’s fear Christ became flesh and blood so that through death He could break the devil’s power over death. The gospel does not deny grief, but it refuses hopeless grief. Jesus offers eternal life as a gift to those who trust Him, surrender to Him, and receive Him as Lord and Savior.
