45s
“``When you welcome folks, remember that. Remember that you are yes. You might be doing the things you've been taught to do as a good sitting, human minded, loving, compassionate human being with good ethics. But deep down, because of the faith we live, that there's something of Jesus in the midst of that as well that is living through you. If you don't understand how it works, I guarantee you it's there. Jesus is welcoming as you welcome because that's how we welcome into this community.”
40s
“So you can go a long ways in bringing folks in who might feel uncomfortable because you don't know why they are feeling the way they're feeling, why they may be anxious the way they are feeling until you get to know them. And the only way we get to truly know them is to begin listening, truly listening and not just hearing. Truly welcoming and not just inviting and being socially responsible human beings, but truly offering a radical welcome that breaks down the barriers of judgment.”
47s
“That's a radical welcome that I think gets to the heart of what God has in store for us. That we are all regardless of how comfortable or uncomfortable we are in a situation, ultimately God's vision for us is to be part of the same community, a similar community everywhere. That it is not about who's got the right theology, theology, who's got the right political ideology, who's got the right fill in the blank. It is God has got love figured out and wants us to understand it so that we can all be part of one community together.”
37s
“With Sandy, it could have been very much, well, I don't go to the synagogue. I'm actually a member of this church over here, and that might have caused for some uncomfortable moments potentially. But the rabbi at the table, realizing that God's love is bigger and greater than that, recognized the true welcome that God offers and simply said, she's one of us. Doesn't matter where she goes or what she believes, she is is one of us.”
