Day 1: A Net Thrown Where the King Chooses

The kingdom of heaven is not a passive force but an intentional gathering. Like fishermen who know where to cast their nets, followers of Christ are sent to specific places and people by divine direction. This mission requires surrendering personal preferences, trusting that the King’s placement is purposeful. The net doesn’t debate its location—it obeys. Our calling is to rest in being tools of grace, not architects of strategy. Wherever God’s people are thrown, they become His means of drawing others close. [51:19]

Day 2: Gathering All Kinds, Not Just Our Kind

The Greek word synagō—translated “caught”—means to lead, guide, bring, or carry. It’s a communal action, not a solo effort. Jesus’ net isn’t selective; it gathers every fish beneath it. The church’s mission rejects exclusion, embracing those we’d naturally avoid. Just as a net relies on its webbed connections to hold weight, believers need one another to sustain the work of gathering. Our preferences fade when we see people through the Fisherman’s eyes. The parable reserves sorting for the end of the age—a task for angels, not humans. Our job is to gather, not grade. When we release the urge to categorize, we create space for surprising transformations. Even “ugly fish” become treasures in the hands of the King. [57:10]

Sermon Summary

Jesus puts the kingdom of heaven in front of his disciples with a simple picture: a net let down into the lake that catches all kinds of fish. The kingdom is not a castle on wheels, and the church is not mainly a building. The kingdom is a committed King with a committed people in relationship, and the church is that people living under the King’s sending.

The net is the key image, not the sorters on the shore. Jesus does not say the kingdom looks like people deciding which fish are good enough. Jesus says the kingdom looks like a net being intentionally placed by the fisherman. The net does not choose the day, the lake, or the fish. The net goes where the owner sends it, because committed members of the kingdom go where the King sends them.

The word “caught” carries the idea of gathering, and that gathering is not a “gotcha.” The Greek word sonago presses together doing something together and the work of leading, guiding, bringing, and carrying. The kingdom people are sent to gather all kinds of people, not just the ones that are easy to like, easy to understand, or easy to fit into church life. The job of the net is not to sort the fish. The job of the net is to gather them.

Jesus gives the church a shared mission. Sometimes that mission looks like leading someone to say yes to Jesus, and in that moment it becomes clear that Jesus was already at work. Sometimes that mission looks like guiding someone one more step closer to Jesus in whatever area he is working on. Sometimes that mission looks like bringing someone again and again, even when they only come to the easy stuff. Sometimes that mission looks like carrying someone’s burden to the feet of Jesus, not as a Messiah, but as a faithful friend.

The church should be “a grace that gathers.” That grace seeks out people who may feel like the ugly fish, because the gathered people of Jesus know that they were gathered too. Jesus calls his people to pray for the person they do not like, to make time, to listen, to ask real questions, and to let that person know them too. The church becomes a people of empathy when Jesus changes the heart that would rather avoid the hard person.
