The Weight of Our Words

Words carry weight because life and death are in the power of the tongue. The tongue can build somebody up, or it can tear them down, wound them, and leave scars that stay for years. God is in the building business, and He calls His people to use words that help, heal, and bring people closer instead of pulling them apart.

Jesus, in Matthew 12, connects the mouth to the heart. The mouth speaks what the heart is full of, so angry words, gossip, slander, constant negativity, and unbelief do not just come from a bad moment. The heart stores things up, and eventually those things come out. Jesus calls empty words useless words because they do not benefit anybody, build anybody, or serve a good purpose. Empty words can tear families apart, destroy unity in the church, and damage relationships that God desires to heal.

The Pharisees show how people can find something negative to say even when God is doing something good. Their accusations against Jesus reveal the evil that was residing in their hearts. The warning against wrong words also guards people from identifying with everything others say about them. People may criticize, find fault, and speak against somebody doing good, but their words are not always the truth about that person.

James compares the tongue to a bit in a horse’s mouth, a rudder on a ship, and a small spark that sets a great forest on fire. The tongue is small, but it can turn the whole direction of a marriage, a family, a relationship, or a life. Gossip spreads when one person repeats a story, another adds to it, and somebody else interprets it. Slander intentionally tears down a person’s character and causes others to question their integrity. Discord literally pulls hearts apart, and God hates it because it destroys unity.

Truth still needs to be spoken with love, care, and the right presentation. The contrast between being factual and being supportive matters deeply, especially in marriage and close relationships. Words that are technically true can still crush dreams, shut down intimacy, and make a person protect their heart. Ephesians calls for words that build others up according to their needs, not merely words that prove a point.

Proverbs calls the wise tongue healing and compares a soothing tongue to a tree of life. A tree gives shade to the weary, fruit to the hungry, and shelter to the vulnerable. God can use a simple thank you, a word of appreciation, or loving correction to breathe life into somebody who is broken. David also shows that a person must sometimes encourage himself in the Lord when nobody else is speaking life. The church becomes stronger when believers both speak life to themselves and build one another up.
