Genesis 21 places Hagar in a wilderness where the water is gone, her son Ishmael is fading, and every visible circumstance says that nothing is left. But Hagar’s bottle and God’s well are not the same thing. The bottle holds a limited supply that somebody gave; the well reveals a provision that God positioned. What has run out in human hands has not exhausted what God has available.

Despair also has a tendency to distract. Hagar begins grieving Ishmael’s death before he has died, allowing present pain to prophesy a permanent future. Faith does not deny the empty bottle; faith leaves room for the possibility that the empty bottle is not the whole story. God’s children can acknowledge the toll of the wilderness while refusing to let despair dictate what God can still do.

God’s deliverance comes through disclosure. God hears Ishmael’s cry, proving that crying is a language God understands. God does not first create a well in verse 19; God opens Hagar’s eyes, and she sees the well that was already nearby. Grace sometimes changes circumstances, but grace also fixes vision in the same wilderness. The prayer in an empty season is not merely, “Lord, send it,” but, “Lord, show me the well You have already put in this wilderness.” Jesus, the living water, finally becomes the well that never runs dry.
