Bible ReadingGenesis 21:14-19So Abraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and a skin of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, along with the child, and sent her away. And she departed, and wandered about in the wilderness of Beersheba.
[01:22:15]When the water in the skin was gone, she cast the child under one of the bushes.
[01:22:39]Then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off, about the distance of a bowshot; for she said, “Do not let me look on the death of the child.” And as she sat opposite him, she lifted up her voice and wept.
[01:22:45]And God heard the voice of the boy; and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, and said to her, “What troubles you, Hagar? Do not be afraid; for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is.”
[01:23:05]“Come, lift up the boy and hold him fast with your hand, for I will make him a great nation.”
[01:23:21]Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. She went, and filled the skin with water, and gave the boy a drink.
[01:23:30]John 4:10-14Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
[02:13:47]The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water?”
[02:13:51]“Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.”
[02:13:51]Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again.”
[02:13:55]“But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
[02:14:00]Philippians 4:19And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
[01:50:21]Psalm 30:5For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning.
[01:58:08]Observation questions- What details in Genesis 21 show how serious Hagar’s situation was when the water ran out, and what did she do with Ishmael?
- What does God say and do before Hagar sees the well? What does this reveal about God’s attention to both Hagar and Ishmael? [02:00:18]
- Genesis 21:19 says God “opened her eyes,” and then she saw the well. What does the passage specifically say God changed: the wilderness, Hagar’s circumstances, or Hagar’s vision? [02:03:26]
- In John 4, what contrast does Jesus make between ordinary water and the living water He gives? [02:13:51]

Application questions- What “empty bottle” are you facing right now—strength, money, patience, health, support, direction, or something else? What would it look like to name that emptiness honestly before God rather than pretending it does not hurt? [01:46:00]
- Have you been letting the condition of one empty resource define the condition of your whole life? What other provisions, people, opportunities, or signs of grace may be near you that pain has made difficult to see? [01:48:37]
- Is there a permanent statement you have been tempted to make from a temporary painful season—for example, “Nothing will change,” “I will always be alone,” or “This will never get better”? How can you leave room for God to write more of the story? [01:56:34]
- When you do not have words for prayer, what might it look like for you to bring your tears and honest emotions to God instead of withdrawing from Him? [02:01:44]
- Where might your prayer need to shift from “Lord, send it” to “Lord, show me what You have already placed within reach”? Name one specific area where you need clearer vision. [01:40:59]
