Matthew 22 sets before God’s people a searching picture of the kingdom of heaven. The king prepares a great wedding feast for his son, and everything is ready. The king provides the food, the celebration, and the invitation, just as God has provided salvation through Jesus Christ. Salvation is not something sinners earn, purchase, or arrange for themselves. Christ has made the provision, and faith receives the gift.
The invitation goes out genuinely: “Come unto the marriage.” The invited guests refuse, not because the feast is lacking, but because their hearts will not come. The farms, businesses, and everyday responsibilities are not necessarily sinful, but they become dangerous when they take the place of God. The question is not simply whether a person is busy. The question is, “Are you busy with?” The cares of this world can choke spiritual life until a person neglects the very God who gave every good thing.
The rejection of the king’s invitation brings consequences. God is loving, gracious, patient, and kind, but God’s grace is never indifference toward sin. The warning to repent is like a lifeguard calling someone out of dangerous water. The warning is love, but the danger remains real whether a person believes it or not. The opportunity to repent must not be confused with unlimited time.
The king then sends the invitation into the highways and streets. God’s grace reaches rich and poor, young and old, those with respectable pasts and those with broken pasts. The gospel calls people from every background to come to Christ. Yet the wedding hall being full does not mean every guest is ready. The man without a wedding garment shows that being around the things of God is not the same as being right with God.
The wedding garment points to the righteousness only Jesus Christ can provide. Isaiah speaks of garments of salvation and a robe of righteousness, while human righteousness remains inadequate before a holy God. Christ, who knew no sin, was made sin so that sinners might become the righteousness of God in Him. The parable begins with an invitation and ends with a warning: “Many are called, but few are chosen.” God’s invitation still stands today, but one day the invitation will no longer be an invitation. Christ calls sinners to come, trust Him completely, obey Him, and belong to His kingdom.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Everything is ready in Christ. God does not invite sinners to build their own salvation. The King has already prepared the feast through His Son, and Christ has done what human effort could never accomplish. Faith does not improve God’s provision but receives it with empty hands. [44:24]
- 2. Busyness can become a spiritual refusal. Farms, businesses, work, and family duties may be good things, yet good things become idols when they keep a heart from God. The danger is not responsibility itself but allowing responsibility to become an excuse for delay. “Later” is a fragile word when eternity is at stake. [47:33]
- 3. Grace is not unlimited postponement. God’s warnings are expressions of mercy, like a lifeguard calling someone away from deadly water. Patience gives room for repentance, but patience should never be treated as permission to remain unchanged. Rejection of God’s call is never a small matter. [49:30]
- 4. Church attendance cannot supply righteousness. The guest without a wedding garment was inside the celebration, yet he was not properly clothed. Religious association, Bible ownership, and church presence cannot replace the righteousness of Christ. God requires the robe that Christ alone provides. [52:27]
- 5. Christ still says, “Come.” The gospel invitation reaches every kind of person, including those with broken pasts and empty hands. Christ calls sinners to forgiveness, grace, and a new standing before God. The open invitation should produce serious self-examination and real faith.
