Come, Take the Water of Life: Hopeful Invitation

Revelation 22 brings John’s strange, smoky, beautiful book to its final word. John does not land the plane with hellfire and brimstone. John lands it with hope. Chapter 21 had already shown the climax, the holy city where death, mourning, crying, tears, cancer, and dementia will be no more. The final word asks what life can look like when that hope is taken seriously.

The tree of life stands again in the middle of the story. Genesis had shown that tree in the garden, and God had kept Adam and Eve from eating it because God would not let sin live forever. Revelation brings the tree back, strong and fruitful, bearing fruit in every season. Its leaves are for the healing of the nations, not the dividing of the nations, not the warring of the nations, not ranking which neighbors matter most.

The angel’s rebuke gives a sharp warning. John sees the glory, bows down, and the angel basically says, “Stand up. The only person you’re supposed to worship is the Lord.” Faith cannot finally rest on a favorite faith leader, a popular theologian, or someone saying, “Vote the way I tell you.” The danger of idolatry shows up whenever human voices become louder than the Lord.

Verse 11 tells the filthy to remain filthy and the holy to remain holy, not because evil is harmless, but because anxiety is not the calling. Jesus says again and again, “I am coming soon.” That promise moves the heart away from trying to control every judgment and back toward faithfulness. The Lord will judge. The church must watch its own heart.

The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” The invitation is not just a churchy phrase. The thirsty are called to come and take the water of life as a gift. That gift creates a people of hope, healing, and invitation.

The leaves of healing become a picture of real compassion. The best theology in the world is not worth much without love, as 1 Corinthians 13 would say. Nurse Rachel matters in the story because healing was not abstract to her. She cared.

Jesus’ promise, “I am coming soon,” is not only about some far-off future day. Christ shows up in diagnoses, hard conversations, homes, lunches, political pressures, and persecuted churches. Saint Peter’s in Tehran may lose its building, but the gates of hell will not prevail against Christ’s church. John’s last amen teaches the faithful reply: “Come, Lord Jesus.”
